The first episode of the new Hawkeye streaming series took fans back in time to 2012, revealing that Kate Bishop was present for the Battle of New York. This major event from the first Avengers movie was cosmic in every sense. It was official confirmation of the existence of aliens for humanity in the MCU and also set off many ripple effects in later MCU movies and shows.

MCU fans know the Battle of New York only gains more importance as the franchise progresses, with numerous characters and secondary events tying directly back to it. This key moment in MCU history will only grow more important as more new characters from New York City emerge, and some older ones from the Netflix Marvel shows potentially return.

Kate Bishop’s Father Died

The new Hawkeye series opens with a flashback to 2012, where a young Kate Bishop is in her home at the time of the attack. The battle is devastating for her personally; she loses her father, Derek. Derek’s death isn’t shown on screen, lending to some mystery about the exact circumstances of his death, but the battle was formative for Kate.

After her home is damaged by the invading Chitauri, among the most dangerous alien species in the Marvel Universe, Kate sees Clint Barton fighting them as Hawkeye. This inspires her to go into archery and want to become a hero like him.

War Machine Was Fighting The Ten Rings

Not all existing MCU heroes were present for the Battle of New York. One of the major players of Phase 1, War Machine, was absent because he was engaged in another major fight. War Machine was fighting the Ten Rings criminal organization in Hong Kong at the time, as shown in Iron Man 3 Prelude, a comic book tie-in from 2013.

Comic book fans know War Machine would have been very valuable in the fight against the Chitauri, but he’s in the midst of a solo battle against the well-armed Ten Rings. He does get back to the city in time to join them for shwarma, though.

The Ancient One Defended The Sanctum Santorum

The Avengers weren’t completely without support in the battle. MCU fans know from the time travel mechanics of Avengers; Endgame that the Ancient One participated in the battle. Her role was limited despite her extraordinary facility in magic. It appears she primarily focused on defending the Sanctum Santorum from the aliens.

It seems that the Ancient One could have been a greater presence in the Battle of New York, but her knowledge of the future via the Time Stone seems to have played a role in her actions during the attack.

Ben Urich Reported The Battle In Daredevil

The Battle of New York had major consequences for the Netflix Marvel series, at least early on, as reported by Ben Urich in the New York Bulletin. Ben Urich, one of the best non-superheroes in Spider-Man comics, is also a major supporting player in Daredevil comics and the Netflix series. He held a framed copy of a paper documenting the fateful attack in an early episode of Daredevil.

While the link between the Netflix group of streaming series and the MCU has been confused somewhat, recent events in Hawkeye seem to suggest that some elements of those shows will continue in the MCU, meaning there is a link in canon.

Most Of Hell’s Kitchen Was Destroyed

The Battle of New York was hugely devastating as Ben Urich’s article attested. The Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan, which lies on the west side of Midtown in the vicinity of Stark Tower, was effectively destroyed. This had major repercussions for the Netflix Daredevil series, and it seems it will in the MCU as well.

Hell’s Kitchen was largely rebuilt by Union Allied Construction, a company run by Wilson Fisk, who comic book fans know as the Kingpin. Given the direction of the Hawkeye series, it seems like this aspect of the Netflix show may be canon in the MCU.

The Battle Lasted Almost Three Hours

While the climactic battle takes up about a half-hour of screentime in Avengers, the actual battle itself lasts almost three hours in real time. This fact comes from a deleted scene from Avengers: Endgame, where Rocket Racoon chides Black Widow for the Avengers taking so long to take down the Chitauri.

The length of the battle makes sense, though, given the logistics of it. The Chitauri and Loki were focused on Stark Tower. The Avengers largely defended the tower and the city on their own, with help from local law enforcement, but their myriad abilities were a powerful check against the aliens.

The Vulture Rose From Its Ashes

One of the major consequences of the battle was the creation of one of Spider-Man’s best villains, the Vulture. The Vulture also traffics in illegal alien technology left behind in the battle. Chitauri technology led to the Vulture’s flight pack and other major weapons used in many crimes around the city and beyond.

Stark Tower Continuity

Not everything lines up in the Battle of New York, as MCU fans know. Though the prologue of Hawkeye took great pains to recreate Clint Barton’s battle with the Chitauri on a rooftop, it seems to have dropped the ball on a bit of visual continuity.

In the Avengers movie, the letter A is the first to fall from the Stark sign affixed to the exterior of Stark Tower. When a young Kate Bishop looks up at the damaged tower relatively early in the battle, it’s still there, but the R is missing from the sign.

The Shwarma Scene Was Added At The Last Minute

One of the best scenes in Avengers is the post-credits scene with the team enjoying shwarma at Shwarma Palace after the battle. Unlike a fair bit of major MCU plot points, this scene was actually added at the last possible moment by writer and director Joss Whedon.

The scene wasn’t filmed until the first premiere of the movie in 2012, extremely late in the post-production process. The actors gathered for a quick shoot, but Chris Evans had to wear a prosthetic chin to hide his beard for another part he was filming at the time.

Miss Minutes Gave Loki A Chance To Win

The Battle of New York is a seminal event in the history of the city and world, as well as its instigator, Loki. In one of the biggest surprises of the Loki series, the TVA mascot Miss Minutes offers Loki a chance to win the battle. As Loki and Sylvie reach the lair of He Who Remains, Loki is offered a last-minute opportunity to redo one of his biggest failures.

Miss Minutes’ offer suggests that the Battle of New York remains a malleable event despite it being foundational in the evolving history of the MCU, and could be revisited again in the future by Loki or other characters.

Possible Nexus Event

Even more importantly, the Loki series has already erased the Battle of New York. In a way. The Loki variant from the series manifests from the efforts of the time-traveling Avengers efforts to acquire the Infinity Stones. The Time Variance Authority considers his existence as a Nexus Event contrary to the Sacred Timeline. They then “pruned’ his native timeline.

They actually destroyed the entire branch of reality this Loki originated from, not only erasing the Battle of New York but the entire universe. Loki can never go back there, and it was as if none of it had ever happened.
