Ever since Logan, aka, Wolverine, joined the X-Men in Giant-Size X-Men #1, he has always had a problem with Scott Summers, aka, Cyclops. No other Marvel heroes fight and make up more than the two. While they mostly prefer to throw verbal jabs at each other, their differences have led to violence on a few occasions.

The friendly rivalry between the duo has been triggered by a couple of things, including differences regarding the best way to lead the X-Men and their crushes on Jean Grey, aka, Dark Phoenix. At times, it has been all down to Logan’s stubbornness and sense of superiority as he considers himself better than Scott in every single way. Their rivalry has played out on screen sometimes but some details can only be found on the pages.

They Were Revealed To Be Brothers

In Marvel Mangaverse—one of the wildest alternate Marvel realities—it’s revealed that Wolverine and Cyclops have been brothers all along. The two can’t stand each other because Wolverine cost Cyclops an eye while Cyclops cost Wolverine an arm.

Whether it’s in film or comics, the “feuding brothers” trope always works. Marvel does it well by pitting the two against each other. The feud also serves to clarify some things, such as why Wolverine’s right hand has claws of energy and not adamantium. Wolverine’s move stems from disgruntlement with how Cyclops is running things. He believes he is good enough to be a leader on his own and that’s why he goes behind Cyclops’s back. The initial members of the X-Force, consisting of Warpath, X-23, and Wolfsbane also turned out to be not as formidable as Wolverine would have liked, hence the need for him to recruit new members.

Cyclops Messed With Wolverine’s Healing Factor

Wolverine is one of the comic characters with the best healing factor but in X-Men #5, he finds himself unable to fight when he infiltrates a base owned by Dracula’s son Xarus because he can’t heal. He believes the vampire virus has bested his healing factor, but in truth, Cyclops has infected him with nanites.

Cyclops intelligence is what comes into play. He understands that Wolverine has a penchant for going rogue but also considers him a valuable mutant. He, therefore, intends to keep him on the team. Instead of fighting him about discipline, he simply looks for a way to control him. With a remote-controlled button, he can activate and switch off Wolverine’s healing factor as he wishes.

Wolverine Revealed The Real Reason He Picks On Cyclops

At times, it has often felt like Wolverine and Cyclops’ rivalry doesn’t make sense. They are part of the same team after all. But in Wolverine #9, the clawed hero makes it clear that he hates Cyclops because he is the stereotypical “pretty boy.” Wolverine claims that no man can trust Cyclops with his wife and that the man only cares about himself.

It isn’t a surprising confession, coming from Logan who has the rough, manly look. In reality, he doesn’t need to be jealous of Scott since he is generally more appreciated than the man. Be that as it may, Wolverine’s confession makes it all makes sense, with readers now understanding why he is always so bitter.

The Once Clashed Over Young Mutants

When Idie successfully kills every member of the Hellfire Club in X-Men: Schism #1, Cyclops continues to use young mutants in missions. This angers Wolverine who fights Cyclops before declaring that he’ll leave with whoever wants to leave with him.

It’s one of many fallouts between the two. This time, it’s obvious that Wolverine is right since the youngsters are neither prepared nor mature enough for the missions. Cyclops enjoy using them because they are easier to control compared to adult mutants like Logan. Thanks to the fallout, Wolverine gets to form the “Jean Grey School for Higher Learning”.

Wolverine Joined The Avengers And Fought Against Cyclops

After the fallout from the use of younger mutants, Wolverine joined the Avengers in Avengers vs. X-Men #2. Cyclops’ efforts to convince him to not butcher his fellow teammates fell on deaf ears as he was enjoying himself.

Wolverine has always had a superiority complex. By joining the Avengers, he feels like he is among equals. However, it doesn’t take long for Wolverine to realize that, having known each other for long, the Avengers members have a special kind of bond that he will never be able to have with them. As such, he eventually finds his way back to the X-Men.

Wolverine Confessed To Wanting Cyclops Dead

At the funeral of Professor X in Uncanny Avengers #1, Wolverine confesses that he sometimes thought of killing Cyclops. Due to the hostility he faces after the revelation, he decides to join the Avengers Unity Squad, led by Captain America.

The confession is as revivifying as it is perplexing since Wolverine ordinarily likes to brush aside his feud with Cyclops, claiming it’s nothing. It takes courage for him to admit that he was not only the aggressor but had evil thoughts too. Though the confession isn’t taken too kindly by those that have known him for long, it opens up new opportunities for him.
