The Simpsons is in an odd place at the moment. It’s one of the most iconic animated comedies in TV history (heck, most iconic shows in TV history period), boasting hundreds of beloved moments and episodes that fans endlessly reminisce about. The trouble is, a lot of those priceless slices of The Simpsons are far behind us now.

However you feel about the 660+ episodes deep show these days, there’s no denying that so many of Springfield’s residents are true TV icons and always will be. Little Maggie Simpson, for one, is often underrated, performing amazing and heroic deeds from the sidelines. Let’s give a voice to the voiceless and celebrate Maggie by taking a look back at some of her most badass moments.

10 The Time She Shot Mr. Burns

Cruel curmudgeon Charles Montgomery Burns is probably the most hated (yet hilarious on the viewers’ part) Springfield resident. He rules his beloved power plant with an iron fist, lording it over all of the lowly townsfolk that he’s far, far richer than all of them (combined, presumably).

This would be bad enough, but the liver-spotted Bond villain wannabe can’t stop with the dastardly schemes. The finale of Season Six sees him finally go too far, unveiling a scheme to block the sun’s light with a huge disk (thereby leaving the entire town reliant on his electricity). Soon afterwards, he’s shot, kicking off a two-part cliffhanger whodunnit with almost all of Springfield as a possible suspect. Who was the culprit in the end? Maggie, that’s who.

9 The Time She Caught A Bottle That Was Thrown At Homer’s Head

In the Season Six episode “Lisa on Ice,” the Simpson siblings reveal their talents for hockey, becoming part of different teams. Naturally, things get very, very competitive. In a touching climax, Bart refuses to take a penalty shot against Lisa and they share a hug. Marge is overwhelmed with pride, while Homer insists that this means they’re both losers.

As for his third child, Homer declares that baby Maggie hasn’t ever done anything for anybody. At which point, unbeknownst to him, a rioting fan (nobody was happy about the tied game) sends a beer bottle flying directly at his head, which Maggie catches. Now, this is what true badass heroism is all about. No fanfare, no demands for praise, no self-hype on social media.

8 The Time She Knocked Out Russ Cargill

That wasn’t the first time Maggie has saved her bumbling father’s life. With the number of absurd situations that Homer manages to find his way into on a season-by-season basis, it’s no surprise the show’s creators have gotten a lot of comedic mileage out of Maggie’s impossible rescues.

Another high-profile one occurred in The Simpsons Movie. As fans will remember, the film revolved around Springfield being encased in a great glass dome, after the EPA deemed the town too dangerously polluted. The townspeople eventually escape their predicament, but the dastardly head of the EPA, Russ Cargill, captures Homer and Bart. He’s about to kill Homer with a shotgun when Maggie appears behind him and drops a rock on his head, knocking him out.

7 The Time She Was Voiced By James Earl Jones

One of the running jokes concerning Maggie is the fact that she’s almost never heard to speak. We’ve seen her as a teenager/adult over the course of the show’s run, but she’s conveniently interrupted whenever she opens her mouth to speak.

“Treehouse of Horror V” provides an exception to this rule, however. One of this episode’s spooky segments sees Homer inadvertently turning the family’s toaster into a time machine while trying to repair it. During his trips through time he creates various alternate futures, including one in which Maggie speaks with the buttery smooth and super cool voice of James Earl Jones. Jones, of course, was the voice of infamous Star Wars badass Darth Vader.

6 The Time She Was The Greatest Alien Menace Springfield Has Ever Seen

Speaking of those spooky Simpsons specials, “Treehouse of Horror IX” also brought us a great Maggie-centric tale. In the story “Starship Poopers,” the baby cuts her first baby tooth, which is more of a terrifying fang. She then loses her “baby legs” (as Homer puts it), running around on the ceiling on tentacles instead.

Clearly, something’s more than a little awry here, and Marge reveals the truth as Kang and Kodos come to claim the baby: Maggie was actually conceived on one of the aliens’ visit to the planet and is Kang’s daughter. All that extra-terrestrial power in the hands of a tiny infant!

5 The Time She Challenged Mr. Teeny To An Old-Fashioned Duel

Fans of The Simpsons Movie will fondly remember the scene in which the townsfolk discover it was Homer who ultimately caused the dome to be placed over Springfield (his silo of pig poop was the last straw for the EPA). They storm the family’s home, torches and pitchforks in hand.

One of the first to force their way in is Krusty the Clown, who orders his trained monkey Mr. Teeny to “take out the baby.” Is Maggie afraid? Absolutely not. She breaks her baby bottle, thrusts the deadly shards forwards and gestures at Mr. Teeny to bring it on. Terrified, the monkey flees.

4 The Time She Led The Baby Rebellion

As is the case with Family Guy’s Stewie Griffin, animated shows sometimes have a way of giving babies and toddlers wisdom and character beyond their years, for the joke’s sake (though it’s often downright scary in Stewie’s case).

Maggie, for instance, has proven herself capable of leading a band of her fellow babies on a daring mission. In Season 4’s “A Streetcar Named Marge,” Maggie is taken to a daycare center. The proprietor immediately takes her pacifier (and those belonging to the other babies), so she hatches a plan to retrieve them.

3 The Time She Took Down Fat Tony’s Gang Single-Handedly

While Maggie did indeed shoot Mr. Burns, that wasn’t entirely intentional. After all, Burns’ own gun fell into her hands and discharged as the pair struggled with a lollipop. Her shoot-out with Fat Tony and his gangsters, however, was completely legitimate (and amazing).

It took place in the finale episode of Season 13, “Poppa’s Got A Brand New Badge.” Homer becomes the chief of police, proving so successful in the role that Fat Tony vows to kill him unless he leaves Springfield. The mobster and some of his men arrive at the Simpsons’ house, where they are all shot and injured by an unseen assailant. “I must have a guardian angel… with a rifle,” Homer remarks, entirely unaware that Maggie had fired the shots from her bedroom window.

2 The Time She Saved Homer From Drowning

That’s right, it’s time for another instance of Maggie saving her father’s life. This scene takes place in Season 11’s “Hello Gutter, Hello Fadder,” in which Homer makes another of his brief and ultimately doomed attempts to dedicate more time to his children.

He tries to take Maggie swimming, but she won’t join him in the pool. They go to the beach instead, where Homer soon finds himself floundering in strong currents. Out of nowhere, Maggie swims over and pulls him to shore like an action hero.

1 The (Other) Time She Took The Tyrannical Mr. Burns Down

As we’ve seen, Maggie ultimately proved to be the one who shot Mr Burns at the close of Season 6. In the previous season, however, she had foiled the bitter billionaire in a dispute over his cherished childhood teddy bear, Bobo.

In the episode “Rosebud,” we learn that the bear is one of very few things Burns truly cares about. When the well-travelled bear finds its way into the Simpsons’ possession by chance, he’s desperate to get it back. Maggie has taken a liking to Bobo too and won’t give it up. The feeble villain tries to wrench it from her grasp, but is left panting and defeated. Eventually, Maggie takes pity on him and hands it back.
