Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes are an iconic couple within the MCU. Bucky is an essential part of Steve’s journey as Captain America. Much of Steve’s motivations center around helping Bucky or keeping him safe.

Fans have long shipped the two together due to the way their stories often revolve around each other. Childhoods friends lost to time and then reunited seventy years later is a very romanticized plotline. With this come many scenes that can be read as Steve and Bucky being more than just best friends.

Steve Enlists (Again)

In Captain America: The First Avenger, Steve is supposed to be enjoying a night out with Bucky and a couple of girls. However, it doesn’t seem like the double date it’s supposed to be as Bucky and Steve are only focused on each other. When Steve attempts to enlist again, Bucky does not think it’s a good idea. He’s worried about Steve being arrested for lying on his forms, but Steve doesn’t care. All he wants is to serve like every other man his age. Bucky is constantly worried about Steve, and although he doesn’t want to step on Steve’s toes, he doesn’t like the idea of Steve fighting in the war.

Steve Rescues Bucky From Hydra

The very first heroic thing Steve does after becoming Captain America is to rescue Bucky. After learning Bucky was captured and is considered MIA, Steve broke all the rules to save Bucky himself. It pushed Steve to finally take the leap from simply being a dancing monkey to a real superhero. While Steve did save the rest of the troops as well, his main motivation was always Bucky. He couldn’t stand the thought of his closest friend being gone and did everything in his power to prevent that from being true. This need to find and be with Bucky at all times would go to motivate many of Steve’s missions in the future.

Steve And Bucky Lead The 107th Home

After rescuing Bucky and the rest of the 107th, Steve leads them all back to base with Bucky by his side. Steve gets the credit for this rescue mission, but it is clear that he wants Bucky by his side. It’s Bucky who calls out for everyone to cheer on Steve. Bucky is proud of his best friend and, while he is shocked at the physical transformation he has undergone, is not at all surprised to see him become a hero. Bucky has always believed in Steve, even before the serum. His belief in Steve is one of the many things that make them such a strong couple.

Leading The Howling Commandos

Steve quickly takes on the full mantle of Captain America and leads the Howling Commandos with Bucky as his second in command. Together they lead missions to take down Hydra and end the war. Steve and Bucky’s teamwork creates a smooth operation and many victories. They know each other’s strengths and weaknesses like no other’s and are able to use these to their advantage. Steve and Bucky are able to lead a team together without any friction or fighting, which is hard to say for many other MCU teams. Their complete understanding of each other just proves Bucky is more than Steve’s best friend.

Steve Triggers Bucky’s Memories

When Steve first sees Bucky in the 21st Century it is a shock for both him and fans. It seems as though Bucky has no memory of Steve, however. But back in the Hydra base after Steve is captured, Bucky appears to be remembering. He tells Alexander Pierce that he knows Steve, although he can’t remember how or why.

Just seeing Steve for a few moments starts to undo decades of Hydra brainwashing in Bucky’s mind. He has to work hard for a few years to come, but he will eventually remember Steve. The bond between Steve and Bucky is powerful enough to overcome even brainwashing.

To The End Of The Line

A flashback scene in Captain America: The Winter Soldier gives fans a glimpse at Steve and Bucky’s lives before the serum. Bucky recognizes that Steve is able to take care of himself, that he is not weak, but he wants Steve to know that he doesn’t have to be alone. There is a huge amount of respect in Steve and Bucky’s relationship. Steve has always been looked down on for things he can’t help, but Bucky doesn’t do that. In this scene, Bucky tells Steve he sees and respects him, but he also cares for him and wants to be by his side always.

Bucky Rescues Steve

The tables turn in Captain America: The Winter Soldier when Bucky becomes the one to rescue Steve. This scene is easily one of Bucky’s best moments. At this point, Bucky still doesn’t remember Steve very well, but he knows he is important. The safest bet for Bucky would have been to flee the helicarriers as soon as possible, or he risks being arrested by the police or captured by Hydra. Instead, he takes the time to pull Steve from the water so that he doesn’t die. Bucky doesn’t linger long, but this rescue is a clear sign of his memory slowly returning.

Steve And Bucky Become Fugitives

When a mysterious person threatens to take down Bucky, Steve wastes no time in breaking various laws to protect him in Captain America: Civil War. Captain America is meant to be a symbol of American patriotism, but Steve doesn’t think twice about that. All that matters to him is making sure Bucky is alright. He doesn’t know what state Bucky is in, but he does know that Bucky is not at fault for the wrongs he committed and should be given a chance to prove that. Steve throws away everything he has built in his new life just to help Bucky.

Fighting Tony Together

The culmination of everything Steve is willing to do for Bucky comes when he must choose between Bucky and Tony. Steve doesn’t hesitate to defend Bucky even though it means turning his back on Tony. Steve illustrates over and over again that his priority is always Bucky.

Steve believes in the person Bucky used to be and is trying to be again. This fight breaks down the tentative friendship he had built with Tony, but Steve doesn’t regret it. In his eyes, Bucky is an innocent who deserves healing, not destruction.

Fighting Thanos Together

Fighting Thanos is the first time Steve and Bucky are fully together since the 40s. At this point, Bucky’s memories have been fully restored by the Wakandan medical team and he is battle-ready again. In the past, Steve has had to fight Bucky himself or convince him to fight for his own good. However, this time they have a common enemy that they agree needs to be taken down. Even in these world-ending circumstances, Steve and Bucky are glad to see each other. Some of Stucky’s best scenes happen when they fight side-by-side. This final fight only proves that Steve and Bucky want to be by each other’s sides no matter the setting.
