Amy and Tammy Slaton have a rocky relationship on 1000-Lb Sisters, and one facet of their dynamic that complicates the pair’s sisterly bond is Tammy’s tendency to blame Amy for her weight problems. Throughout her three seasons on reality television, Tammy hasn’t been fruitful in her weight loss endeavors. Instead of taking accountability, Tammy is prone to pointing the finger at her sister. From lashing out during therapy sessions to resenting Amy for the progress she has made, here’s why Tammy tends to use her sister as a scapegoat for her weight loss issues.

Tammy and Amy decided to star on 1000-Lb Sisters because they viewed the show as an opportunity to motivate themselves to get bariatric surgery. When the pair of Slaton sisters were first featured on reality TV, both Amy and Tammy required the weight-loss operation to save their lives. To qualify for bariatric surgery, however, Amy and Tammy had to first lose weight, which proved to be a trying test on both of the sisters. Ultimately, Amy was able to stick to her diet and undergo the gastric bypass operation at the end of 1000-Lb Sisters season 1. Tammy, on the other hand, hasn’t been able to accomplish the same weight loss feats as her sister.

Although both Slaton sisters started their quest for bariatric surgery on 1000-Lb Sisters season 1, Tammy’s experience over the course of the show’s two seasons has been very different from Amy’s. While Amy was preparing to start a family with her husband Michael Halterman and her son Gage on season 2, Tammy was still trying to lose enough weight to qualify for the bariatric surgery. Not only has Tammy not been able to achieve her weight loss goals, but the reality star actually gained weight on the latest 1000-Lb Sisters season. When Tammy’s been confronted about her increased weight, she is quick to blame her sister for the extra pounds. In a clip from 1000-Lb Sisters season 2, Tammy complains to her therapist, “When I look for [Amy] to go get my food… and she brings back something different.”

The 1000-Lb Sisters star asserted that if her sister bought the foods she asked for, Tammy wouldn’t be struggling with her weight. Although Tammy might think she’s making herself look better by deflecting some responsibility onto Amy, the reality star is really just exposing her own insecurity. In the therapy scene, it’s apparent that Tammy becomes upset when Amy describes all of her achievements in the past year. From losing enough weight to successfully qualifying for bariatric surgery to having a family of her own, Amy has achieved many things that Tammy is unable to due to her food addiction. This scene demonstrates that Tammy is frustrated with her inability to reach the goals Amy has. The main way Tammy deals with this angst is by holding Amy accountable for her faults instead of taking responsibility for her own. Ultimately, Tammy has a dysfunctional relationship with food that Amy has no control over.

Tammy has attempted to share responsibility for her futile weight loss journey with her sister, but Amy’s only guilty of achieving the goals both sisters set out to accomplish. Although Tammy’s food addiction makes her dependent on the support of her family, Amy isn’t responsible for Tammy’s weight gain. Regrettably, it appears that instead of being inspired by Amy’s successful weight loss on 1000-Lb Sisters, Tammy resents her sister.
