The 16-inch MacBook Pro has been refreshed two years after Apple introduced the last Intel-powered model in 2019, and the latest model comes with a number of aesthetic and internal upgrades. In making these changes, Apple has continued to reduce the MacBook Pro line’s dependency on Intel, a process that began last year with the debut of its M1-chip powering the 13-inch MacBook Air and Pro models.

Aside from the switch from x86 to ARM architecture, Apple has also made another change this year. When the M1 chip arrived, users could only pick between either a 7-core or 8-core GPU version, while the number of CPU cores remained the same at eight. With the Intel-powered 16-inch MacBook Pro models, for example, Apple offered a choice between three Intel SKUs and four AMD graphics options. Now, Apple has brought back the SKU diversification with the 2021 refresh of its 16-inch MacBook Pro, in addition to a ton of other upgrades as well.

Starting with the design, there are a lot of meaningful changes this year. The Touch Bar from the 2019 model is gone in favor of a physical row of function keys. There’s also now a larger escape key and a redesigned Touch ID button that looks like the one shipping with the M1-powered iMac. Another key hardware upgrade is the port selection. The 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro offered only four Thunderbolt 3 ports, while the 2021 successor comes with a trio of faster Thunderbolt 4 ports, an HDMI port, an SDXC card slot, and the MagSafe 3 port for charging. Apple has also trimmed the bezels on all sides this time, and added a notch.

The 2019 version offered a choice between 9th Generation Intel Core i7 or i9 processors and AMD Radeon graphics. The 2021 model, on the other hand, lets users choose between the 10-core M1 Pro chip with a 16-core GPU or the 10-core M1 Max chip with a 32-core graphics engine. Storage and RAM max out at 8TB and 64GB respectively on both iterations. With the 16-inch MacBook Pro for 2021, Apple has also upgraded the thermal design making it capable of moving 50-percent more air than its predecessor. However, the 2021 model is slightly heavier at 4.7 pounds compared to the 4.3-pound profile of the 2019 version.

Coming to battery life, an Apple silicon-powered 16-inch MacBook Pro can last up to 21 hours when playing video and 14 hours when web-browsing. In contrast, the battery life stats for the same activities on the 2019 MacBook Pro stood at 11 hours each. Apple shipped a less powerful 96W brick with the 2019 version, while the 2021 iteration ships with a 140W USB-C charger. Both laptops feature a six-speaker system, but the 2021 refresh adds support for spatial audio while playing Dolby Atmos content. Additionally, when paired with third-generation AirPods, AirPods Pro or the AirPods Max, users can experience spatial audio magic with dynamic head tracking. Lastly, the 3.5m audio jack has also been upgraded to support high-impedance headphones.

The display is another area where Apple has taken a major step forward. The 16-inch MacBook Pro (2021) screen measures 16.2 inches diagonally, offers a resolution of 3456 x 2234, and uses an improved mini-LED panel. The 2019 version came with a slightly smaller 16-inch LCD display with a lower resolution of 3072 x 1920 pixels. The brightness has also gone up from 500 nits to a whopping 1600 nits of peak output. Another huge upgrade is the arrival of ProMotion tech, which means the display now refreshes content at up to 120Hz for a smoother visual experience and higher battery efficiency. Of course, there’s now a notch, but Apple has managed to somewhat justify the odd design choice with an upgraded 1080p FaceTime HD camera that is backed by computation chops for improved video quality.

Apple has not made any changes to the color palette, as both MacBook Pro 16-inch models can be purchased in Space Gray and Silver colors. The official Apple Store no longer lists the 2019 version for sale, but it can be grabbed from third-party retail outlets. Speaking of which, the 16-inch MacBook Pro (2019) started at $2,399, but it can be purchased at a discounted price following the arrival of its successor. The 2021 MacBook Pro (16-inch) starts at $2,499 for regular customers, while students can get it for $2,299 with the base configuration.
