Pokémon Red and Blue were two of the biggest games on the original GameBoy, so it only makes sense that Nintendo would have Game Freak work on a sequel. The result was the critically-acclaimed duo of Pokémon Gold and Silver. Seeing a new adventure take place in a brand new region enthralled fans of the series and brought in more players.

Along with the new region was a host of new Pokémon to capture, including some evolutions and baby forms to pre-existing creatures. They were sequels to remember and have gone down in history as some of the best in the franchise. Since their release, Gold and Silver have seen their fair share of remakes as well as a re-release on the 3DS eShop complete with Pokémon Bank support.

Despite being out for so long, there are still many secrets that these games (and the subsequent Pokémon Crystal) are still hiding. Whether it be related to the Pokémon you can capture, the locations you can visit, or the lore of the Johto Region, Gold and Silver are packed with new information.

After all these years, here are 20 Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal secrets that you still don’t know to this day.

20 An Ultra Easter Egg

Pokémon Gold and Silver were just re-released in 2017 for the 3DS eShop. For the most part, they are the exact same games as you remember them on the Game Boy. Of course, there are a few useful differences. First of all, wireless communications was ported in to allow for trading and battling with other players.

Another difference was a very subtle one. Game Freak was excited about the upcoming release of Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. Because of this, there was a spot in the trailer for the classic games that spelled out “Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon” in Unown. There have been few times where Unown letters were used to reference future projects, but we’re happy that Game Freak went the extra mile here.

19 A Celebi-bration!

20 Pokémon Gold Silver And Crystal Secrets You STILL Dont Know

Much like Mew in Pokémon Red and Blue, Celebi cannot be obtained in Gold and Silver through normal means. This time around, Celebi can only be legitimately captured by the use of a crazy method. Back in the day, it involved a connection with the Pokémon Mobile System. This route would lead to the player receiving a GS Ball, which would then have to be expected.

Several steps and at least 24 hours later, you’d be able to encounter Celebi at level 30. If you’re really desperate, though, there’s talk of the legendary Pokémon being acquired through a similar method to getting Mew in the original games: an impressive glitch that only the most skilled and determined players can effectively pull off.

18 Free Baby Pokémon

One of the big additions to the second generation of Pokémon involved baby Pokémon. These were pre-evolved versions of already existing Pokémon from the first generation. Jynx, Electabuzz, and Magmar all received these baby Pokémon. However, you can’t just find them in the wild. There are two ways to get them: through specific breeding and through a gift.

Pokémon Crystal allowed players to obtain an odd egg in addition to the one that contained Togepi. This second egg can hatch into any one of the new baby Pokémon. However, the result is completely random, so players who wanted to fill their Pokédexes would need a little bit more effort before they could succeed. After all, the breeding process isn’t exactly a quick one.

17 Legendary Origins

Taking the place of Moltres, Zapdos, and Articuno, as the Legendary trio for Gold and Silver was Entei, Raikou, and Suicine. These three beasts would normally be found in Ecruteak City before scattering across the Johto Region, only being encountered in the wild. However, a little more detail about who these beasts were was revealed later in the Pokémon franchise.

The lore states that Entei, Raikou, and Suicune, were once normal Pokémon who were caught in a burning building. They all died before the legendary Ho-Oh came down from above and gave them a new life. On top of a second chance, they were also given more powerful appearances and greater moves. The fact that they became Legendary Pokémon just by the power of another says a lot about Ho-Oh.

16 Trading Up

Believe it or not, no new fossil Pokémon were introduced in Generation II. Because of this, the only ancient Pokémon known to the people of Johto were Kabuto, Omanyte, and Aerodactyl. Needless to say, these creatures were still pretty difficult to come by even for the most skilled trainers of the world.

Thankfully, a lucky trainer on Route 14 has options for trainers passing by. They’re willing to offer an Aerodactyl for a Chansey. Of course, Chansey is already a rare Pokémon, but giving one up in exchange for a once fossilized Pokémon is very worth it. What’s most surprising about this is that it is present in Pokemon Gold, Silver, and Crystal altogether. That’s definitely a trade worth making!

15 Into The Unown

One of the most mysterious locations in the entire Johto Region is the Ruins of Alph. There isn’t anything more interesting there than strange Pokémon known only as Unown. They are Psychic-type creations that resemble different letters of the alphabet. Their only move in combat is Hidden Power.

As you enter the Ruins of Alph, there are very little messages written on the walls that tell you how to progress. Once the trainer gets more Hidden Moves and specific Pokémon, they can travel to more regions of the ruins and unlock more Unown to capture. Dedicated trainers will likely have captured every single letter of the alphabet. Later on, the “question mark” and “exclamation point” Unown would be added to the roster and available in HeartGold and SoulSilver.

14 A Big Promotion!

In Pokémon Red and Blue, players were introduced to eight gym leaders in the Kanto Region, a tradition that would be continued throughout the series. Many keen-eyed fans of the first two games would notice an interesting change in Gold and Silver, particularly with the Elite Four.

As you begin fighting your way through the powerful trainers, you’ll end up battling a member who uses solely poison-type Pokémon. His name was Koga, and fans will recognize him as one of the eight gym leaders from the Kanto Region. Clearly, Koga’s technique as a ninja became more effective for him to become a Gym Leader. It’s also worth noting that the Kanto and Johto Regions have the same Pokémon League.

13 Red’s Legacy

20 Pokémon Gold Silver And Crystal Secrets You STILL Dont Know

One of the most impressive parts of Pokémon Gold and Silver is the post-game content. During your travels, you will come across a location known as Mt. Silver. Once you start making your way through the floors, you’ll battle powerful wild Pokémon until you eventually find yourself on the snowy peak.

At the very top of the mountain, there is only one person there waiting for an epic Pokémon battle: Red, the protagonist from Red and Blue. Bringing a powerful roster of Kanto-specific Pokémon, it will take all of your experience to put him to shame. What’s most interesting is that he never says a word and it’s never explained why he’s up there. He simply disappears after you beat him. The same is true in HeartGold and SoulSilver.

12 Double Dipping

20 Pokémon Gold Silver And Crystal Secrets You STILL Dont Know

Pokémon Gold and Silver started the trend of featuring Legendary Pokémon on the cover art. The Pokémon on these covers were clearly the Legendaries that the player would then capture just before the eighth gym. However, this usually came with a choice: players would have to only get the Legendary Pokémon on the box art and couldn’t capture the other.

There is one exception to this rule (minus the remakes): Gold and Silver. After you beat the Elite Four, you have the ability to travel to a specific part of the Johto Region to get either Ho-Oh or Lugia depending on the version you have. They aren’t identical, though, as their levels will change with each version. Either way, make sure you stock up on Ultra Balls for the battles.

11 A Whole New World

20 Pokémon Gold Silver And Crystal Secrets You STILL Dont Know

Most Pokémon games only let you go through one region, but this is where Gold and Silver really shine. Not only are these games a pure sequel to the first generation, but they are a massive upgrade. Once you beat the Elite Four, you’ll realize that there’s another route to travel. This will take you right to the familiar sight of Pallet Town, where you can begin a completely new journey.

Gold and Silver have a fully explorable Kanto Region. While it’s not completely the same map of Red and Blue, it does offer a massive amount of new content. All of the towns from the previous games are intact, and you can even challenge the eight gym leaders of that region. It’s only after you beat all of these powerful trainers that you can climb up Mt. Silver and challenge the trainer Red.

10 Safari Zone In Construction

20 Pokémon Gold Silver And Crystal Secrets You STILL Dont Know

The Safari Zone was introduced in the first two games as a place where you could go to catch rare Pokémon that would otherwise not appear in the game. This location has later returned in future games in the franchise to allow players to catch Pokemon that would normally not reside in that region. It was also planned to be in Gold and Silver.

However, time constraints prevented the Safari Zone from making it into the Johto Region. It was developed enough that code for it does exist in the game, and it can be accessed through hacking. The only way you can catch Pokémon in it is by fishing, though. Walking through tall grass won’t do much there. It’s sad it didn’t make it, but the entire Kanto Region is there, so it’s all good!

9 The Secret Son

20 Pokémon Gold Silver And Crystal Secrets You STILL Dont Know

Blue/Gary was a pretty aggravating rival in the first two games, but Gold and Silver weren’t about to take that sitting down. Introducing the trainer known as Silver, Game Freak created the most hate-worthy rival in the history of the franchise. Silver was uncaring, committed all sorts of crimes, and even stole his first Pokémon from Professor Elm’s Lab.

Evidently, Silver’s behavior was genetic, as his father was none other than the boss of Team Rocket: Giovanni. To be fair, Silver didn’t have a good relationship with his dad and didn’t completely agree with his ideals. Still, there’s no denying the behavioral resemblance between the two. Physically, they couldn’t be farther apart. Silver has that bright red hair.

8 The End Of Team Rocket

20 Pokémon Gold Silver And Crystal Secrets You STILL Dont Know

The antagonists from Red and Blue returned for Gold and Silver, but something was a little different this time around. They weren’t quite as strong as they once were. As a matter of fact, Team Rocket was significantly weaker, and their plans not as ambitious in the Johto Region. They cut off a few Slowpoke tails and took over a radio station, but that was about it.

The reason for this is that the organization took a severe hit in the first games. Giovanni disappeared into hiding and Team Rocket was in fragments. Those extremely loyal to the cause tried to revive it in the Johto Region, but with very little success. It wasn’t long before the trainer Gold screwed up their plans and they agreed to disband the team for good.

7 Bringing Psychic Balance

20 Pokémon Gold Silver And Crystal Secrets You STILL Dont Know

When Pokémon was first created, Game Freak came up with the idea of separating these creatures based on types that each had their own respective weaknesses and resistances. When it came to the Psychic-type Pokémon, Game Freak came up with a single type to specifically combat it: Ghost-type. However, the only ghost Pokémon in the first generation was also a poison type, meaning that they would also be vulnerable to Psychic-types.

Going into generation two, Psychic-types were still a little unbalanced, and Game Freak had to come up with a solution. They created two new types to manage it: steel and dark. Steel was extremely resistant to psychic while dark was extremely effective. Alakazam and Mewtwo wouldn’t have such a strong hold over the battle world with this alteration.

6 Bowing Out Early

20 Pokémon Gold Silver And Crystal Secrets You STILL Dont Know

When creating games or movies, many creators feel that it’s important to bow out early so your franchise can end on a high note. That was the original idea for Pokémon Gold and Silver. After the success of the first two games, Game Freak wanted to create a sequel, have a lot of closure for the events of its predecessor, and end the series there.

However, Gold and Silver were even more successful than Red and Blue, so Nintendo had other plans. Pokémon still remains one of their strongest franchises to this day, and that trend doesn’t look like it’s slowing down anytime soon. Once we see anything about the Pokémon game on Nintendo Switch, everyone is going to lose their minds.

5 It’s His Mother’s Name!

20 Pokémon Gold Silver And Crystal Secrets You STILL Dont Know

In the Pokémon games, there are three things you can name: yourself, your rival, and your Pokémon. While this doesn’t give a whole lot of options for customization, it does allow you to alter everything you need to. But what if we were to tell you that players of Gold and Silver were originally supposed to name their mothers?

Game Freak revealed that Gold’s mother’s name was going to be up for the player to decide, but it was cut for being seen as not relevant to the overall experience. After all, they wouldn’t want people naming her Martha so that he and Silver could have some sort of reckoning and immediately become best friends. All joking aside, it’s a decent idea, but we’re not broken up about its absence.

4 Pokémon 2

20 Pokémon Gold Silver And Crystal Secrets You STILL Dont Know

Pokémon is known for releasing two versions of a game at the same time. It encourages players to trade with each other and create new friendships along the way. However, it wasn’t the original plan to do this for Gold and Silver. Game Freak’s idea was to create a singular game that served as the sequel to the adventures in the Kanto Region.

The game was going to be called nothing other than Pokémon 2, being more of a direct communication of a sequel rather than a new adventure entirely. However, they realized that the two version formula worked so well the first time that they were going to use it again this time around, hopefully to greater success.

3 Shiny Charizard’s Design

20 Pokémon Gold Silver And Crystal Secrets You STILL Dont Know

One of the most desired shiny Pokémon in the entire franchise is shiny Charizard. Why is this? Well, not only is Charizard a fan-favorite Pokémon, but his shiny form changes him from orange and blue-green to black and red. Many dedicated players will breed a Charmander and Ditto for hours and hatch eggs just to try and get themselves a shiny version.

Back when shiny Pokémon were first created for Gold and Silver, Charizard originally had a much different color palette. He was purple and green, meaning that trainers wouldn’t be nearly as excited to get their hands on one. This also presents an interesting observation about shiny Pokemon: why would Game Freak use ugly colors for them? Many of the shinies feature rather weak color schemes.

2 Exclusive Sprites

20 Pokémon Gold Silver And Crystal Secrets You STILL Dont Know

Sprites for Pokémon are usually created with each new game to showcase that they are more improved versions. That being said, it’s a trend that will likely be going the way of the dodo now that the series is using full 3D models for the games.

However, there was some extra work done when Gold and Silver came out. Instead of using the same sprites across both versions, different images were showcased in both games. This was done to further enhance that they were different games rather than just the same game with a different name and cover legendary. It’s a move that we would’ve liked to see return in later entries in the series, but it’s definitely too late for Game Freak to start implementing it now.

1 Only On The Game Boy Color

20 Pokémon Gold Silver And Crystal Secrets You STILL Dont Know

After the success of Gold and Silver, Game Freak decided to continue it by having a complete version like what Pokemon Yellow did for Red and Blue. This new game was titled Pokémon Crystal and featured Suicune as the cover Legendary Pokémon. There were many differences to this game as it related to Gold and Silver, but one stands out above the rest: it was solely a Game Boy Color game.

This meant that anyone who had a Game Boy, played Gold and Silver, and wanted Crystal, would have to shell out the extra money to get a Game Boy Color just to play it. To be fair, the cartridge for the game was a transparent blue and it remains one of the most beautiful Game Boy cartridges to this day.
