2022s Game Of The Year Award Is Going To Be A Tough Choice

Singling out just one title as the top contender for The Game Awards’ coveted Game of the Year in 2022 is going to be a hard task for fans and critics. While there are still several months left in 2021, and some hotly anticipated titles are yet to release this year, many gamers have already started turning their attention to 2022 and the incredible array of titles that will be launched throughout those 12 months, including games like Horizon Forbidden West and Elden Ring.

In the past, there has often been a clear choice for a Game of the Year award. In 2020, The Last of Us Part 2 became the year’s runaway success, eventually becoming the most awarded game in history. Despite being controversial in terms of plot points, the game received nearly universal praise for its mechanics, accessibility options, visuals, and more. In 2017, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild threw out the Zelda mold of the past for open-world gameplay and non-linear story development, winning many GOTY awards.

However, for 2022, there isn’t one game that stands out as the obvious and superior choice for the Game of the Year award. In 2022, fans can expect to finally get their hands on Elden Ring, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, Redfall, Forspoken, God of War’s sequel (which is colloquially known as Ragnarök) and Starfield, to name but a few. Admittedly, some of these titles were originally set to release this year, but the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic has, justifiably, delayed the launches of several high-profile games. Most recently, this Horizon Forbidden West was delayed, adding to the contenders for 2022’s GOTY award.

Why Anticipation For 2022’s Games Is So High

There is no denying the incredible advances that have come with the current generation of consoles, and the many games that will be releasing in 2022 will be launching on, and tailored to, them. With items such as the PS5’s DualSense controller, playing a game has become a much more all-encompassing experience. Thanks to these advances in technology between the last and current generation of consoles, the visuals that players can expect to see have also improved. For instance, when Sony revealed its first teaser of Aloy diving beneath the water in Horizon Forbidden West, the internet went wild, even though this was only a small snippet of what should be a vast and compelling world.

However, another big reason why anticipation for these 2022 releases is so high, is that many of them are sequels to titles that are still incredibly beloved, and that were ground-breaking on their launch. God of War and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild offered fans of these series’ such an extraordinary experience on their release that gamers understandably cannot wait to see what the developers will do next in terms of story and immersion. Whatever does happen, though, it will certainly be a lot of fun discovering which title does eventually turn out to be 2022’s Game of the Year at The Game Awards.
