25 Classic Cartoon Characters Reimagined As Girls

It is hard to imagine a childhood without having a bunch of go-to cartoons that you would watch throughout the years. Waking up on a Saturday morning to your favorite bowl of cereal and having a marathon of your favorite cartoon classics until noon when your mother eventually made you go outside is a wonderful pastime for everyone. Despite eventually growing up (and more than likely just moving on to different cartoons), we still have so many fond memories of the characters we grew up with whether they be from cartoons, comics, or video games.

Though times have been changing quickly and have been becoming more inclusive, looking back on popular cartoon series will have people realize that the lead characters are often times male dominated. Sure, every so often we got a Sailor Moon or a Josie and the Pussycats, but most cartoons over the years have largely targeted a male demographic.

Of course, many of these characters could have just as easily been female as they could be male.

While we are definitely happy with the characters we grew up with, it is often times interesting to take a look at what could have been or the possibility of gender swapped versions of our favorite cartoon classics. With so many male cartoon leads, the fan art community online has re-imagined many of these classic characters making us look at things from a different perspective. Here are some of your favorite characters from cartoons if they were re-imagined as girls.

25 Mother Earth Returns

25 Classic Cartoon Characters Reimagined As Girls

You probably should not mistake this version of Captain Planet as the actual Mother Nature as any fan of the original television series most likely knows that Gaia is the character who is known to be Mother Nature and who once created Captain Planet. Though because of Captain Planet’s ability to protect the planet Earth, it makes sense that he could just as easily be a she.

After all, many people do associate the benevolence of the planet with motherhood.

Because Captain Planet’s character is known as a powerful being mainly with the purpose of defending the world, he is actually a fairly gender neutral character without any specific gender traits, so this fantastic rendition of the planet saving hero would actually work quite well with this more feminine get up.

24 A Beautiful Beast

25 Classic Cartoon Characters Reimagined As Girls

The Beast from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast may have been known to be a rather ferocious and hideous creature, yet the movie taught us that beauty really falls on the inside. While it may be difficult to see this animated flick’s gender roles swapped, this take on the Beast’s appearance is quite fetching. Strangely enough, this female version of Beast doesn’t look nearly as scary as her male counterpart and actually looks quite beautiful… well, for an oversized fur ball and all.

Maybe it has something to do with her actually washing and grooming her hair?

While she may not be the highest standard of feminine beauty, this beastly rendition definitely shows just how glamorous and feminine looking the Beast’s character can actually be, despite the monstrous stature.

23 Lady Luck Is On Her Side

25 Classic Cartoon Characters Reimagined As Girls

Gambit is arguably one of the coolest X-Men to exist, being well known to those who loved the comics and cartoon series alike. Sure, Cyclops and Wolverine might be the head honchos of the X-Men, but Gambit was the real hardcore mutant that everyone wanted to play as on the playground. Not only the guys wanted to be the card slinging mutant, but the girls did as well. This rendition of the popular mutant shows that a gender swapped version of the character would be just as equally cool and it’d be something we’d love to see in an alternate universe as well. Hopefully one day, Gambit actually gets a decent role in the X-Men universe of movies… this is a character who just hasn’t been portrayed right in film!

22 Seven Of A Kind

25 Classic Cartoon Characters Reimagined As Girls

Looking back, it is actually kind of hard to believe that a princess living with seven older men was something deemed appropriate for the first ever fully animated motion picture. Besides, almost anything these days is considered too controversial. But assuming Snow White living with seven dwarfs was too much back in the day, we could always just assume Walt Disney could have just as easily changed the seven dwarfs to female variations of themselves.

Besides, it’s not like anything was going on between them and Snow White, right?

While the fairy tale version of dwarfs are usually represented as male, this rendition of the seven dwarfs just goes to show that the ladies are just as happy to whistle while they work as the men are. Except for maybe Grumpy.

21 A Summer Of Adventure

25 Classic Cartoon Characters Reimagined As Girls

Phineas and Ferb certainly went on a lot of adventures during their 104 of summer vacation, all while traversing multiple dimensions in the Disney Channel original film Phineas and Ferb: Across the 2nd Dimension. While at one point, they did get to meet more timid and less adventurous versions of themselves, it’s hard to imagine that they at one point never crossed a dimension where everything was gender swapped. They did have to cross hundreds of different dimensions after all and a gender switched dimension is pretty much a staple of alternate universes! If they ever were to appear in such a different world, this representation of the duo (along with their older sister… ahem, brother) would certainly fit the bill as to what they might look like.

20 She’s No Square

It’s hard to have a list of classic cartoon characters without mentioning one of Nickelodeon’s most iconic cartoon properties. After being on the air for two decades, releasing two films, and its own Broadway musical, SpongeBob Squarepants is arguably one of the most popular cartoon characters in recent memory. While a female SpongeBob isn’t necessarily hard to imagine, this version of the titular character does something a little bit differently. Not only making SpongeBob a female, the artist also made her body shape a little less sponge-like. Sure, this might not be the typical squared sponge that we are used to, but she still reminds us of our favorite underwater sponge in all the right places, even if she is a bit taller than we are used to.

19 He Always Needed A Female Counterpart

25 Classic Cartoon Characters Reimagined As Girls

I kind of always wished that Sonic the Hedgehog had a female counterpart that had a little bit more attitude sort of up to his level. Sure, Amy Rose may be Sonic’s “love” interest, despite him usually seeming overwhelmed by her embrace… she does come on a little strong after all.

Maybe Sonic needs a gal Hedgehog that can actually keep up with him.

While it might be weird to go out with someone that looks almost identical to you, this female version of Sonic definitely has the look of the speedy Hedgehog. Though I wouldn’t put it past Dr. Eggman to create a female doppelganger to try and woo the blue blur. Maybe one day we will see a female rival hedgehog that will give Sonic a run for his gold rings.

18 Minus The Dragon Balls

25 Classic Cartoon Characters Reimagined As Girls

I remember Dragon Ball becoming a very popular animated series growing up, somewhat making people more interested in anime over in the West. While many people had been introduced to some animes in the past such as the Sailor Moon series, it feels like Dragon Ball is what really made anime more popular, making the art style of Akira Toriyama somewhat synonymous with anime. While the Dragon Ball series has never been dismissive of hardcore female fighters, the biggest warriors are largely male. Not in this gender bending version of the classic anime series, of course! While it may be hard to imagine Goku as a female, this depiction of the character certainly makes it seem possible. Though I’m not sure if those heels would be a suitable substitute for battle!

17 Less Regular Than Usual

25 Classic Cartoon Characters Reimagined As Girls

Regular Show is one of those oddball cartoons that seems to attract viewership from all ages from kids to adults and for a good reason. Its whimsical sense of humor is something that can be appreciated by adults yet the wacky antics of Rigby the Raccoon and Mordecai the Blue Jay are entertaining for kids as well during its run over the course of eight years. While these two slackers may not be the best groundskeepers in the world, they are still good for a laugh or two. Not only featuring female versions of Mordecai and Rigby, this piece of fanart gives us a glimpse at a male version of Margaret as well. Hopefully, these gender swapped variations of Mordecai and Margaret still have a thing for each other.

16 A Street Mouse For Her Prince

25 Classic Cartoon Characters Reimagined As Girls

Swapping out Disney Princesses for Disney Princes is a pretty common thing in the fan art community, yet for some reason it seems less common to see female versions of the less royal characters. Aladdin has always been one of my favorite Disney heroes as he always seemed the most adventurous, cunning, and exciting of the main antagonists during the Disney Renaissance.

Yet this street rat’s story would probably work just as well if he were a street mouse.

Flipping the gender roles upside down, we can easily imagine a female Aladdin surviving on the streets while a male prince is the one who is trapped behind palace walls. It looks like this version of the story ends up with a happy ending as well turning a once been street mouse into a princess.

15 Still Heroes In A Half Shell

25 Classic Cartoon Characters Reimagined As Girls

I think most people would be hard pressed to really be able to tell the difference between a male and a female turtle and creating female versions of our four favorite Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles could be no easy feat. Despite that, the hit comic book and multiple television versions of the characters would likely work just as well with the characters being female. While these four turtles definitely still retain many of the characteristics of their male counterparts, they do seem to include more… feminine features than before. Strangely, they seem just as muscular (if not more so) than their male counterparts and seem largely inspired by the more recent Michael Bay films. It might not be such a bad idea to give these mutant ninjas some female counterparts to date anyway!

14 Pewter City’s Beauty

25 Classic Cartoon Characters Reimagined As Girls

Brock first appeared in the original Pokémon games as the Pewter City Gym leader and of course became an important character in the Pokémon anime that followed. The anime fleshed out his backstory more which was pretty much absent in the games, showing that he had to take care of all of his brothers and sisters (though he eventually abandoned them to travel with Ash). Though one trait of Brock in the anime definitely stood out.

Brock was definitely a womanizer almost to an obnoxious extent.

While this gender swapped version of Brock certainly looks the part, we can’t help but think that she’d be a little bit… well, calmer when it comes to wooing the opposite gender. Unless of course she is just as boy crazy as Brock is woman crazy that is.

13 She’s Leaving The Mask Behind

25 Classic Cartoon Characters Reimagined As Girls

I remember Sailor Moon coming out when all the children in the world were still pretty hung up on the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, yet this was one of the few superhero franchises that really could compete with the dinosaur riding rangers. Sailor Moon came out at a time when anime still wasn’t quite as popular over in the West, yet the show definitely was a benchmark for the style of animation.

What made Sailor Moon so unique was that it was a team of powerful supergirls rather than boys.

This was pretty rare at the time. While Sailor Moon might not have the same flavor if everything was gender swapped, it’s still hard not to admire this Tuxedo Mask transformation… though I’m not totally sure if that outfit really counts as a tuxedo.

12 Her Strength Will Go The Distance

25 Classic Cartoon Characters Reimagined As Girls

It looks like Hercules has been making some gains at the gym and Phil couldn’t be more impressed. I’m not really sure how you change the name Hercules into a female variation, but this gender swapped version of the hit Disney film definitely has Hercules looking way more like a beautiful Greek Goddess than before. Hercules may not have been a crowd favorite during the Disney Renaissance but it still manages to be one of my favorite Disney flicks that deserves a little bit more love than it gets. Sure, the Disney Renaissance was somewhat fading at the time and the style of animation was changing, but this is one of the best cartoon takes on Greek mythology that we’ve ever seen… despite it covering up some of the more inappropriate themes, of course.

11 Not The Band You Remember

25 Classic Cartoon Characters Reimagined As Girls

I’m not sure if these characters would necessarily be considered “classic” cartoon characters, though I think their unique identity are definitely worth considering when making this list. This piece of fan art is a gender swapped version of the English band Gorillaz which is largely known for being a “virtual band.” Rather than using their actual appearance, the band members have their own animated personas known as 2-D, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle, and Russel Hobbs. Their music videos are all animated shorts featuring the four characters and the idea of an actual feature length film was once in the works, though the band members could not get in agreement with the Hollywood executives. While the music certainly would sound different with female vocals, we can’t help but dig these girl versions of the band members.

10 A Girl Was Behind The Mask All Along

25 Classic Cartoon Characters Reimagined As Girls

Mysterion is the superhero alter ego of Kenny from the hit cartoon South Park and it is really one of the very few times we get to see Kenny’s character (or should I say hear him) from under his muffling parka. Strangely, Kenny’s persona is a rather big change under the mask rather than when he is just hanging with the other kids on the playground.

Dark and mysterious, he’s called Mysterion for a reason.

Though Mysterion’s identity wasn’t necessarily known when the character was first revealed and he could have just as easily been anyone… even a girl. Sure, that gruff voice might be hard to imagine coming from a ten year old girl, but it definitely would have been a surprising reveal in the show.

9 An Alternate Reality Couple

25 Classic Cartoon Characters Reimagined As Girls

Arnold and Helga from the show Hey Arnold! might have been the most unlikely couple pairing if they ever actually did end up getting together. Sure, Helga has always pined over Arnold over the years, but her abrasive nature toward the football head (and to others as well) made her seem like a very strange partner for the rather benevolent titular character. This is kind of an odd gender swap of the two as it looks like Arnold turned into a giggling little girl, not exactly carrying over his former personality as he tends to be the more serious one out of his group.

At least the shirt versus skirt debate can be put at rest.

Strangely enough, the male version of Helga still seems pretty rough around the edges, but hey, at least she gets to hold Arnold’s hand in this reality.

8 A Cult Hit Gender Swap

25 Classic Cartoon Characters Reimagined As Girls

Invader Zim was definitely somewhat of a cult classic when it released on Nickelodeon back in 2001 and while it was certainly a strange departure from the other Nicktoons that aired on the network, it still had a pretty strong following which appealed to a slightly older demographic. While critically acclaimed, the show was still cancelled before its time though due to the popularity of it, it still managed to carry on in other forms of media. Here, we get two gender swapped variations of characters again, both within the Irken race of aliens. Most notably, the titular character has been turned female on the right while one of his many antagonists, Tak, has been turned male on the left, all while very much still retaining the show’s art style.

7 Not An Unlikely Multiverse Scenario

25 Classic Cartoon Characters Reimagined As Girls

Rick and Morty is one of the more recent cartoons on this list and whether it will go down as a cartoon classic or not is still yet to be decided, though no one can deny the current popularity of the series and its influence on society.

I mean, just look at the influence it had on McDonald’s customers over a twenty year old sauce.

Gender swapped versions of the titular characters might not come as much of a surprise to Rick and Morty fans as the show has already dealt with a multiverse multiple times so running into their female counterparts is something that is kind of just bound to happen eventually. When it does, we can’t wait to see the antics that come from it!

6 Leaving The Chest Hair Behind

25 Classic Cartoon Characters Reimagined As Girls

We have already taken a look at another cartoon character from Beauty and the Beast earlier on in this list, and while a female version of the Beast for whatever reason still seems believable, a female version of Gaston is kind of a hard pill to swallow. The thing about Gaston is that he is… well, he is just such a man. He pretty much embodies every negative stereotype a man can have. Overly confident, narcissistic, and he totally thinks he is every woman’s fantasy. Seeing those qualities transferred over to a female variation of him feels somewhat bizarre, though the artist still does a good job depicting what a female Gaston might look like. We just hope every last inch of her isn’t covered with hair.
