If you’re a lifelong gamer of my generation, you’ll remember the 90s all too well. It was a wild, wild time. Yo-yos suddenly and bafflingly became a thing again, Pokémania was descending on us all, Walkmans existed (remember cassette tapes?) and Dairylea Lunchables were the height of desirable cuisine.

What a time it was to be alive. Above all of these things, though, 90s child gamers will vividly remember the whole Nintendo vs Sega thing. On which side did your allegiance lie? You didn’t take sides lightly. It was like freaking Sophie’s Choice around here. At my old school, friendships were won and lost and mothers’ weight problems were alleged over it. Would Mario fans play with Sonic fans? They would not. This was the most serious of serious business.

Now, sure, there’s absolutely nothing new about console wars these days. Just look at the petty insults that are still being thrown around. Sony Pony, Nintendrone, all these sorts of things. Meanwhile, PC gamers just look haughtily down upon us; sniffing a little like as rich lord as he passes by the common folk.

This isn’t everybody, of course, but there are still some of us who think that way. It’s probably because they’re children of the 90s, who grew up with this sort of vicious behaviour. 25 When It’s Harder Than Ever To Choose The Red Or Blue Pill

Since The Matrix’s release in 1999, the whole red-pill-blue-pill thing has become a powerful symbol. Wise old beardly wizard Albus Dumbledore once spoke of making “…the choice between what is right and what is easy,” and that’s exactly what we’re addressing here.

In the movie, Morpheus, the leader of the rebellion, gave Neo the choice between the red pill (which would free him from the Matrix’s control at the cost of its knowledge) or the blue pill (which would send him back to the digital world of blissful ignorance). We all know how that worked out for him, but what would you choose?

More importantly, what is the meme-maker saying about Sega and Nintendo here? Marvel/DC? Taco Bell/McDonald’s? Hitch up your pants and make a choice, friends. There’s no mix and matching in life.

24 When Mario Odyssey Totally Copied Sonic Adventure

Now, don’t get me wrong here. Nobody’s just talking smack about Sonic Adventure. The 1998 Dreamcast title is still regarded as among the best in the hedgehog’s repertoire; his first 3D title and one of the finest shows he’s ever put on in three dimensions. It was actual 3D Sonic gaming, with no gimmicky motion controls or talking swords thrown in.

Let’s be frank, though. I think we’re reaching a little here. This is what happens when Sega fans get a little too riled up. True enough, that’s a city right there, in Sonic Adventure and in Super Mario Odyssey. A similar looking one too. What are we doing here, though? Lots of games feature bland grey cities. What’s next, is Mario Odyssey copying 2008’s Animal Crossing: Let’s Go To The City? There’s a city in that, after all. They go to it, as I’m sure you’ve gathered.

23 When You Don’t Even Remember Which Kind Of Hater You Are Any More

With all of that said, though, when you’ve got a legitimate reason for disliking something, that’s more than fair enough. Maybe you’re taking an ethical stand against a company’s money-grubbing policies. Maybe a low-flying N64 landed on your chihuahua and crushed it, and now you’re totally against Nintendo. That, I’d be all types of on board with.

If you just don’t want a console, so you haven’t bought it, what’s wrong with that? Nothing, that’s what. Trying to start some inane message board argument with somebody who has, on the other hand, seems all kinds of unnecessary to me. It’s like the people who despise a certain YouTuber, so they’ll hop into their videos purely to tell them so. Rather than, you know, simply avoiding something they can’t stand.

22 When Sega Just Aren’t As Cool As They Used To Be

Now, all of this corporate competition business is all well and good. It can be a positive, and not only because it gives us an excuse to look back at some of the most brilliantly cheesy ads of all time. It can be all-round great for the industry, when it inspires developers to excel. That’s got to be good news for all of us, right?

At the same time, though, the problem is that you can never be sure how these things are going to work out. You can rise as high as you like, but if you do, coming back down is going to hurt all the more. Sega’s glory days are far behind them now, and however relevant they still are in the gaming world, that’s tough.

Now, I don’t know if you’ve heard, but there’s something special about Sonic The Hedgehog. He runs pretty dang fast. I know, I should have added some kind of spoiler warning before I blew your minds right out the top of your skulls like that, but there it is.

When it comes to running, and being darn quick about it, you’re in Sonic’s wheelhouse, buddy boy. A slightly lesser-known fact about Sega’s mascot is that his Twitter account is hilariously snarky. I don’t know who runs that baby, but they sure deserve a raise. Just look what happened here. Nintendo of America were harming nobody, just showing off Odyssey’s new running animation. Sonic couldn’t resist getting all up in his grill.

20 When Nintendo Aim Both Barrels Of Snark Right Back At Sega

Traditionally, in the Nintendo vs Sega arena, Sega are seen as the snarkers, and Nintendo the snark-ee. Of the two companies, I’d say that Sega were the ones that exemplified the whole concept of cringey 90s cool and attitude.

Or ‘tude, as it always had to be pronounced.

The commercials of the era are a fascinating case study. Some of them were hilariously explicit, the kinds of things that no company in their right mind would dare even think about brainstorming today. What it came to just plain old petty competition, though, Nintendo did bite back on occasion.

Check out this subtle jibe, for instance. No fuss, no muss, just straight up insinuation that Sonic the Hedgehog belongs in the trashcan with the no-hopers. Steady on there, guys.

I know. I completely empathize with everything you’re going through right now, but here’s the harsh reality of it: there’s really no need for console wars to have ever been a thing. Maybe it’s just me, but I’ve never given a teeny rat’s glutes about others’ gaming habits. What concern is it of mine?

As I say, I like to stay neutral in these sorts of situations. I like to be that rich kid who owned both systems, and so was totally above the petty bickering at recess.

Now, I turn 30 this summer, and I’m already feeling some kind of way about that. I feel bad enough without becoming one of those back in my day cynics. You just can’t help it, though, with the way that the industry keeps leaning towards that sort of thing.

Over the years, a thousand snarky PR people have dropped a thousand snarky slogans to make fun of their competitors. It goes with the territory; this is what big business is all about. The notorious Sega does what Nintendon’t may not be a shining example of timeless, brilliant wit, but it’s become a meme in its own right. That’s a kind of success, I guess.

You know what Nintendon’t do? They don’t take kindly to fan ‘homage’ games.

In a way, it’s true. They’re completely ruthless to YouTubers, too. The faintest whiff of game footage being shown, and the rabid winged lawyer-monkeys are dispatched. Sega, meanwhile, have infinitely more chill. The recent Sonic Mania was developed by big names in the Sonic ROM hacking/fan game community.

16 When You Find Out What Captain America And Iron Man Were REALLY Fighting Over

If you saw Captain America: Civil War (like most of the darn universe), you’ll know that there was a pretty darn significant conflict at its root. We’re not talking about ridiculously melodramatic superhero-on-superhero fanservice battles (although there are plenty of those in there for our eyeballs to feast on), but something a little deeper. More ideologically based.

I have to admit, the movie surprised me. When the debate regarding the need for more closer regulation of the Avengers came up, I never thought that Tony Stark would have been for that. There it was, though.

Civil War was the deepest and most thought-provoking movie in the MCU yet, in my eyes. However, it didn’t quite touch on the true issue: Mario or Sonic? Now that’s an ideological gulf.

15 When Sega Were Truly Powerful

Those of us who were born in the late 80s/early 90s have seen a lot of crazy things in our relatively brief lives so far. Remember the days when the Fresh Prince was a fashion icon? When Eminem was a rising newbie who you had to listen to in secret because of his sassy lyrics?

When you had to get off of the internet because your mom wanted to use the house phone?

If you were born a little later, you won’t remember any of this. You wouldn’t appreciate just how powerful Sega were, in the console market as well as software. They were out there going toe to toe with Nintendo at the height of their own power. The failure of the Dreamcast, which brought Sega out of the hardware business forever, was a darn sad loss.

14 When Chinese Mobile Ripoffs Are Where It’s Really At

Now, a lot of people have said a lot of snarky things about the Super Smash Bros. series. They’ve written it off a simple party game, not really a fighter at all (which is kinda sorta true). They’ve said it’ll never be competitive, citing things like tripping and other RNG-tastic mechanics. They’ve written it off as a sort of Mario Kart to Street Fighter’s Gran Turismo.

Which is totally cool. Everyone’s totally welcome to feel however they want. One thing you can’t begrudge, however, is the size of the roster. The more recent instalments have been utterly stacked, even featuring the previously-unthinkable likes of Sonic, Solid Snake and Mega Man. The cast list may be huge, but whether it features the right characters is up to personal opinion as well.

13 When Nintendo Forget That Europe Exists

As a UK gamer, I’m more than familiar with the way that Europe tends to be treated by the industry. I’m not a fan of importing games, being unable to read the text and all, so I tend to be stuck simply waiting it out. In the US, this is already enough of an issue, but the European market gets the poopy end of the stick due to the languages concerned. Localisation for English, French, Italian, German and Spanish needs to be considered too, and that can be an arduous process.

So, yes, there are definitely logical factors coming into play here. It’s not quick and easy to translate a text-heavy title like an RPG or Animal Crossing, after all. As well as that, though, you need a publisher to be willing to get off of their seats and make things happen.

12 When Sega Really Need To Get On Your Level

If you’ve never played the Mario & Luigi titles, you might not know about Bros. Attacks. These are combination attacks in the RPGs, which require Mario and Luigi to work together to pull them off. They’re super powerful, but you need to be able to keep your Bros. Points topped up in order to perform them.

Now that we’re up to speed about the nature of these hilarious-looking attacks (the combined spin jump that is Splash Bros. is a beautiful thing to behold), let’s get down to the meme at hand.

It’s Bros time, and I’m not talking about the old 80s band.

Just what’s going on in that bottom image? Who even is that green character in the middle? I’m getting a PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale feeling from this one. You know, that when you just can’t compete, because you don’t have the iconic characters feeling.

11 When Nintendo’s Ads Were Completely On Point

As we’ve seen, then, nostalgia is one of the most powerful forces on Earth. It’s one that can make us double or triple dip, and publishers and developers everywhere know it. Hindsight, then, is a kind of partner in crime for nostalgia. They aren’t the same thing, but they share a lot of the same ideals and wear similar embarrassing superhero costumes.

Times change, and slogan-makers and advertisers are particularly vulnerable to this. When you look back at your portfolio of 90s work, it’s not always with the greatest of pride. Along with the likes of Sega does what Nintendon’t, these sorts of ads have become memes in their own right.

10 When Sonic Has No Darn Business In A Kart Racer

When Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing was released, the internet wasn’t shy about dumping its unique brand of snark all over it. It’s funny, really, as Mario Kart clones are really nothing new around here. After all, even the freaking Crazy Frog had his own kart racer (it was woefully, punch-your-own-eyeballs-in-the-face terrible, but it was a thing), so we’d all resigned ourselves to it.

But Sonic? Driving? What is this sorcery?

Very few of the clones ever came anywhere close to the original karter. Many PlayStation fans would cite Crash Team Racing as one, and for good reason. Not only was the core karting solid, but the character himself was big enough to support the idea. As is Sonic, of course, but the party poopers insisted on asking: why is Sonic the Hedgehog driving? Driving a car that’s slower than he is? Does not compute.

9 When The Brave New 3D Era Changed The Game Forever

As I’m sure I’ve made abundantly clear by now, times change. If they didn’t, Disco Stu wouldn’t be a brilliant The Simpsons cliché, he’d be exactly what all guys looked like when we got dressed to go out on a Saturday night. I don’t know about you, but I just don’t think I could pull off a big old afro.

So, yes. We can all reminisce about the Mario vs Sonic pitched battles of the 90s all we like, but the fact is, they’re just not a thing any more. As franchises like Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games have proven, the two have established a friendly relationship now. They’re buddies. It’s enough to make the staunchest PlayStation/Xbox fan team up with their ‘rivals’ to sing a duet of Ebony and Ivory.

8 When Your Fans Can Never And Will Never Be Satisfied

Now, I’m not one to tar everybody with the same brush. It’s easily done, particularly here on the internet where we’re free to be as d-baggish as we please. It’s just not fair to lump everybody into the same… big barrel of shame. PC gamers don’t all look down on console players.

Call of Duty players aren’t all whiny ragers.

If there’s one thing you can quite safely say about gamers, though, it’s that we can be a tough bunch to please. Creators are in a difficult situation, in that innovation is super risky either way. Take a franchise in a new direction and you risk ruining it. Play it too safe and similar, and you’re lazily resting on your laurels. How do you win?

7 When You’ve Got Those Double Standards

The trouble here, I think, is that Sonic’s reputation has been tarnished over the years. Much more so than Mario’s. This isn’t to say that Nintendo’s main man is infallible, far from it, but his output has been much more consistent. It was the switch to 3D, as we’ve seen, that caused the hedgehog to fall behind somewhat. That, and Big the Cat, because nobody likes that guy.

When the pair have made similar moves, then, we’ve been more inclined to trust Mario than Sonic of late. We might talk about gimmickry like talking swords, but sometimes Sonic’s in the same wheelhouse as Mario. What happens then? That depends on who you’re asking, but a lot of the time, it’s Sonic who comes out worst.

6 When You Wake The Beast And You Have No Regrets

Growing up, I wondered what the big deal was with console wars. I’m still a little baffled as I watch full-blown flame wars going off in YouTube comment sections. Why is a simple slight against Microsoft, Nintendo or Sony (delete as applicable) taken as a personal slight?

Now, see, this is exactly the problem.

Maybe, I guess, it’s because it’s intended as such. A lot of people lurking about the internet are looking for something to be offended by and/or argue over, and we know it. Your average troll feeds on that sort of thing. They know that a casual jibe against Nintendo will be taken as though you’ve personally roundhouse kicked their grandma in the face.

It’s the circle of aggression, and it rules us all.
