Characters are the heart and soul of any memorable video game. Their voice, their mannerisms, and their appearance all synergize to bring what was once just an idea to life. But there’s another aspect, a mysterious quality, that certain characters have that appeals to us in a subconscious way. A study has shown that aesthetic diversity evolved through a need for individualism, but facial recognition plays an important part in social cognition. This explains why you may be drawn to a certain character for some inexplicable reason. Scientifically speaking, your brain is simply connecting the appearance of that character to an idea of a character that is already in your mind, established long before when you likely met someone with with similar features.
It works the same way with celebrities; you see a famous person in a film or interview and start to develop and idea of their personality, eventually growing more attached to it. When you see a similar face, you’ll subconsciously attribute the pre-existing personality with the new face, akin to what some might call “love at first sight” (assuming you liked the person in the first place). And even if it isn’t like or dislike, a simple familiarity often makes a character more likeable. Whether this was intentional or not for the characters on this list is difficult to say.
But enough science, let’s appreciate some beautiful people. Keep in mind that no motion capture actors with their characters were included, these are purely coincidental dopplegangers (some more uncanny than others).
25 Ellen Page And Ellie (The Last of Us)
Ellie won our hearts in the 2013 masterpiece Last of Us. The young but resolute girl steadfastly braved a post-apocalyptic, zombie infested world alongside her hesitant caretaker, Joel. The motion capture and voice for Ellie was actually done by a lovely actress named Ashley Johnson. However, fans were quick to see the similarities between her and Ellen Page, another talented actress who starred in such films as Juno and Inception. She was aware of her comparison with Ellie, and didn’t take it too well. At the time, she was voice acting and modelling for another video game character: Jodie Holmes from Beyond: Two Souls.
24 Shannyn Sossamon And Alyx Vance (Half-Life)
According to Half-Life 2: Raising the Bar, a published compilation of behind-the-scenes facts, artwork, and more, Alyx Vance’s character was modelled after the actress Jamil Mullen. However, she also bears a resemblance to Shannyn Sossamon, acknowledged by her (mildly photoshopped) cosplay above. Sossamon’s multicultural heritage gifts her with gorgeous looks, and lifelong training led her to become an actor. In a potential live-action Half-Life film (assuming they’d make a film but not a third game), she may just make the short-list.
The character, Alyx Vance, assists the main protagonist Gordon Freeman in the iconic Half-Life series. She’s a gifted scientist with a tragic past, instrumental in the resistance against the Combine, an organization that acts as the game’s main antagonist.
23 Cameron Diaz And Maria (Silent Hill)
These two similar-looking women couldn’t be more different in personality. Cameron Diaz is a beautiful and talented actress whose first major role was in The Mask (1994) alongside Jim Carrey. She continued to work as a model while she auditioned for various independent films and eventually rose to fame. She’s been described as adventurous and kind.
Maria, the main antagonist in Silent Hill 2, is nothing alike (expect physically). She is an NPC follower of James, controlled by the player. Along the way she offers nothing but mental torment and enigmatic dialogue. James is deluded by her, since she looks exactly like his late wife, Mary, and fights a battle in his mind to see the truth.
22 Alessandra Ambrosio And Lara Croft (Tomb Raider)
Lara Croft’s image has changed drastically since she was first modelled in 1996 (talk about unrealistic expectations for women, amirite). The developers pivoted towards a more plausible image in the recent Tomb Raider (2013) game. Lara is now a more matured and battle-hardened woman who, from the game poster above, looks almost exactly like Alessandra Ambrosio. If the model threw on some (makeup) dirt, tied back her hair, and slung a quiver over her shoulder, they could be twins. Currently, Alessandra works as a model for Victoria’s Secret (but you already knew that, didn’t you?) and has done a few cameos, usually as herself. She has also started her own brand called ále, and on the site she features her blog, Instagram, and more.
21 Adam Lambert And Commander Shepard (Mass Effect)
Here we feature the only male on this list, though ironically his doppleganger is the female version of a character who can actually be male or female depending on the whim of the player. Adam Lambert began his career when he won the eighth season of American Idol, and has been songwriting, singing, and even acting ever since. In 2011, he began a collaboration with the current members of Queen (RIP Freddie Mercury), going on several international tours. Shepard, on the other hand, commands the Normandy, a spacecraft used on the various missions the player embarks upon during the games. They’re both on tour, just in different ways. Looking again at the photo, the most striking similarity is probably the subtle eyeliner and bold eyebrows.
20 Kate Upton And Bikini Girl (GTA V)
The likeness is a coincidence, but the pose was planned. In this image from Sports Illustrated, Kate Upton mimics the iconic poster from GTA V. In place of a phone she holds seashell, and opts out of the peace sign (it’s actually a ‘V’ as in the Roman numeral for the number five, as in GTA V). Racy red gives way to an ocean blue as far as swimwear is concerned, and matching bedroom eyes complete the image. When the poster first came out, many fans thought it was based on her, or even other actresses such as Yvonne Strahovski or Lindsay Lohan (who wasn’t too pleased with the resemblance). The actual model used in the wallpaper is Shelby Welinder.
19 Cobie Smulders And Lydia (Skyrim)
That’s right, it’s your favorite video game companion, Lydia. Throughout your adventures in Skyrim, she’s always there to hold your stuff, tank bad guys, and much more (if you have the mods). The original Lydia will always be beautiful, that will never change, but that doesn’t mean we can’t add a bit of ENB flair to her features, like in the photo above. With a more elegant and realistic texture upgrade, she strongly seems to resemble Cobie Smulders, the Canadian actress and star of the iconic sitcom, How I Met Your Mother. We could point out the lips or the intense eyes, but all the evidence we need is in those immaculate cheekbones.
18 Marie Avgeropoulos And Aela The Huntress (Skyrim)
While we’re on Skyrim, let’s take a look at another famous female character: Aela the Huntress. Part of the Companion’s Guild, she will occasionally aid you on certain quests, provide advice, and engage in less-than-charming conversation. Her strong appearance is mirrored by Marie Avgeropoulos ‘ character, Octavia Blake, in the tv series The 100. Maybe it’s the face paint, or maybe it’s the eyes, but the two bear a strong resemblance. They’re both leaders, fighters, and strong, independent women. The only real difference is in attire, where one is practical and the other seems purely aesthetic (we’ll let you decide which is which).
17 Taylor Swift And Tracer (Overwatch)
OK, hear me out. The similarities might not be obvious at first, but they’re subtle. They have the same head shape (?), nose (??), and mouth (???), and both have ‘issues’ when it comes to boys. Overwatch characters are slightly cartoonish, so perhaps a photorealistic rendition of Tracer might reveal a clearer resemblance. Also, Taylor’s voice is essentially Tracer’s if she did an American accent, and vice versa. Plus, if Taylor donned stylish orange goggles and a chronal accelerator while rocking a more anti-gravity haircut, I’m certain no one would be able to tell the difference. She’s already halfway there in the photo!
In all fairness, while this matchup isn’t perfect, it’s not completely out of the question, and goes along perfectly with our next celebrity…
16 Karlie Kloss And Widowmaker (Overwatch)
Someone call Jeff Kaplan, we found our first actress for the Overwatch live-action film (disclaimer: Karlie Kloss is actually a model). From the killer stare to the killer cheekbones, Karlie perfectly embodies the hardcore attitude of Widowmaker’s persona. Both look like they could kill you in an instant, and both would look fabulous doing it.
The best part is that Karlie Kloss and Taylor Swift, our “doppleganger” for Tracer, are best friends (or used to be, there’s some unconfirmed drama, but that’s neither here nor there). Anyone familiar with the canon fandom-created ship between the deadly sniper and perky time-traveller can appreciate the connection. However, at least for now, Karlie and Taylor are just platonic.
15 Tina Fey And Bayonetta (Bayonetta)
A fashionable protagonist from a famous “hack and slash” game and an actor who writes much of her own lines hardly seem like a match, but apparently they look the same (or is it just the glasses)? The game series drew inspiration from Devil May Cry, and many positive reviews noted how it did so with class and even surpassed its predecessor. Bayonetta, the character, was actually designed to be sexy (more than usual), with a chic look that matched the game’s aesthetic. Tina Fey, while certainly beautiful in her own right, is more known for her comedic wit and acting talent from hit shows such as 30 Rock and comedic masterpiece Sisters. I suppose the lesson here is “don’t judge a book by its glasses.”
14 Zooey Deschanel And Elizabeth (BioShock Infinite)
In the latest installment of the BioShock franchise, you play as Booker Dewitt, a stranger in the city of Columbia who frees Elizabeth from captivity and guards over her as he traverses the enigmatic, floating metropolis. Her naive visage is a stark contrast to her dark past and traumatic upbringing, the details of which are revealed in an ending so mind-blowing it’ll leave you speechless during the length of the credits. You see a charming young girl, but know little of the ghosts that haunt her mind, thrashing against her skull and screaming to get out.
Zooey Deschanel, on the other hand, is best known for portraying the happy-go-lucky Jess on the TV comedy, New Girl. It chronicles her misadventures with her trust gang of roommates, friends, and lovers, all in a light atmosphere of jokes and the occasional moment of happy tears. Innocent blue eyes and dark brown hair, what more could you need?
13 Alexa Ray Joel And Christie Monteiro (Tekken)
Christie was first introduced in the fighting game Tekken 4 and has appeared in numerous sequels and spin-offs since then. She’s the granddaughter of the late Legendary Capoeria Master, whose fighting style she adopted. Her image has changed slightly from the first model, and in this current form she is a dead ringer for Alexa Ray Joel, the American singer and songwriter. Her image comes from a cover of Sports Illustrated. The two are near-twins with their brunette hair, tan skin, and cheerful eyes (and some tasteful nudity). While one is a skilled fighter and the other is a talented musician, they both bring us joy in their own way.
12 Naomi Watts And Yennefer (The Witcher)
One might almost think Naomi Watts actually did motion capture for Yennefer, but one would understandably be wrong. The two share very similar features; almost everything but the hair. In the game, Yennefer is a powerful witch who uses magic to change her appearance into what you see above. The facial model was designed to be almost unattainably beautiful, given the supernatural powers that led to its formation.
Not many see Naomi Watts as an appropriate doppleganger; most of the community seems to support Eva Green as a potential actress to play the character in a potential live-action film. In terms of looks, Watts might be a great match, but as far as personality goes, Eva Green has more experience with cold characters who are kind at heart, just like Yennefer.
11 Toni Garrn And Triss Merrigold (The Witcher)
While we’re at it, let’s talk about Geralt’s other love interest, Triss Merigold (you actually choose between her and Yennefer in the third game). I could point out the deep, smoky eyes or exasperatedly curious expression, but a picture’s worth a thousand words, and two side by side are worth much more (do the math). Triss, like Yennefer, also possesses powerful magic, though uses her’s to stay in a state of perpetual youth.
Toni Garrn herself is a model from Germany, working for Calvin Klein. Her beauty is natural and non-magical (even without the make-up and photoshop). If you had to choose between Toni and Naomi, who would you choose?
10 Annabelle Wallis And Cirilla (The Witcher)
And last but least of characters from The Witcher, we have Geralt’s trainee Cirilla, who looks a lot like Annabelle Wallis, an actress from England. Notable roles in her filmography include Grace Burgess in the BBC show Peaky Blinders and Jenny Halsey in The Mummy, a less than successful reboot of a solid franchise. Neither roles involved sword fighting with magic, but they did require an actress with strong resolve and independent spirit, qualities that both Annabelle and Ciri possess. Just a little more mascara and white hair dye for Annabelle, and Geralt wouldn’t be able to tell the two apart.
9 Skyler Samuels And Lulu (Final Fantasy)
You can see Skyler Samuels in her most recent show, Scream Queens. Before that, she was also on American Horror Story, created by Ryan Murphy (who made Scream Queens). While the photo above displays a more reserved personality, she is actually quite charming and lovely. She hasn’t done any work in video games, though it wouldn’t be surprising if she did, given her resemblance to Lulu. This witch from Final Fantasy X has the same dark beauty and powerful eyes. She is a specialist in black magic, aiding the player throughout the storyline of the game. She guards her caring and kind personality with a stoic exterior, but then again, don’t we all?
8 Lena Headey And Rubi Malone (WET)
Lena Headey is best known for playing Cersei Lannister in the hit TV drama Game of Thrones. She plays a reserved yet cunning woman positioned high in the royal court. She’s led a life of both privilege and suffering, and holds family above all else (not always the best thing). She walks the edge between damsel in distress and powerful Queen, leaving viewers unsure of whether to hate her, love her, or pity her. Rubi Malone, on the other hand, is a ruthless mercenary, albeit with good intentions. She uses acrobatics along with various weapons to complete her missions, and shares a certain likeness to Lena Headey. The similarities are highlighted in the image above, in which the picture of Headey is borrowed from Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.
7 Mandy Moore And Sarah Kerrigan (StarCraft)
Most fans of StarCraft are familiar with the tragic backstory of Sarah Kerrigan, so for the sake of not bumming everyone else out, we won’t go into it. In an early cinematic for the game, we see Sarah clad in battle gear and engaged in a fight. This early model bears a certain child-like resemblance to Mandy Moore, the American singer, songwriter, and recent actress. She voiced Rapunzel in the 2010 film Tangled, and reprised the role in the spin-off TV show. While she’s never really played a female soldier character, something tells us she just may fit the part. Even after Sarah becomes Kerrigan, Queen of Blades, she retains a hint of Moore’s likeness, if she were a lot more evil-looking.
6 Amy Jackson And Chloe (Uncharted)
The voice acting and motion capture for Chloe Frazer, the “bad girl” counterpart to Nathan Drake in the Uncharted series, was done by Claudia Black. However, her facial features and curious eyes make her look like a slightly older version of the British model and actress, Amy Jackson. In the game, Chloe is independent, witty, and fun. She was meant to contrast Drake and highlight aspects of his own personality. She’s also described as a very sensual character, hence the choice of image for her younger doppleganger. Amy herself has starred in various popular Bollywood movies, and before that she had been working as a model since her teen years. Maybe one day she’ll take on the role of a sassy adventurer.
