The 90s were a magical time. Playing video games at home were becoming more popular, thanks to the Nintendo Entertainment System and Sega Genesis. When kids weren’t allowed to play the latest and greatest games, there were plenty of new cartoons to watch.
Saturday mornings were when most kids had free reign of their television sets. The biggest channels, like ABC, NBC, and CBS had a wide variety of cartoons to entertain children. These shows ranged from comic book heroes, video game stars, anthropomorphic animals, and Japanese shows adapted for North American audiences. Even today, adults look back on these cartoons fondly.
Not all cartoons were enjoyed at home. Studios knew that most kids loved cartoons and were willing to pay to watch the newest films in theaters. Disney became a household name in the 80s and 90s thanks to their selection of Disney Princess films.
Creative children often thought about their favorite cartoon characters in new situations. If they weren’t inserting themselves as the hero in their favorite show, they were creating new stories for existing characters.
The 90s may be over, but that hasn’t stopped artists from reimaging these characters into someone new. Many of these creators wrote fanfiction or created artwork that “shipped” characters together that were hinted to have feelings for each other. Some went so far as to draw them as parents.
