A new year, a new entry in the Madden franchise to get hyped-up for. Really, at this point, buying the games has just become a formality for football fans wanting to get their yearly roster update fix. All joking aside, there are some new features to look forward to in this – and every – iteration of the mammoth football simulation franchise. But as much as they’re scrutinized and talked about, features take a backseat to something else: ratings. As soon as new Madden ratings are released, many fans like to discuss who’s should be higher/lower and which players are spot on. This year is no different.

As soon as the ratings dropped for this year’s Madden, fans began to dissect and scrutinize the choices made by the development team. It isn’t really an exact science, and it shows in how both fans and some players have reacted to this year’s ratings. Some of these ratings just don’t make sense and every year it feels like there’s more and more discrepancy in how they’re formed. There are some pretty notable names on this list that you may or may not agree with.

Here are 25 Madden 19 Ratings That Are Too Ridiculous For Words.

25 Ndamukong Suh – 94 OVR

25 Madden 19 Ratings That Are Too Ridiculous For Words

Certainly one of the biggest defensive names on this list, Ndamukong Suh is a standout defensive tackle in the league. He’s an aggressive, volatile player that has gotten a bad reputation for his fiery play. However, with all that said this is still too high a rating.

Suh is the second highest rated defensive tackle in the game behind the New York Giants’ Damon Harrison – a phenomenal run stuffer. Suh is rated ahead of guys like Fletcher Cox and Gerald McCoy. He’s a great player but a little overvalued. You could also say that the guys below him are undervalued.

24 Lamar Jackson – 79 OVR

25 Madden 19 Ratings That Are Too Ridiculous For Words

We’ve already looked at one rookie passer and now we’re going to look at another one. It was certainly a bit of a shock to see the Baltimore Ravens select Lamar Jackson in the first round. Jackson is a rare combination of arm strength, mobility, and big-play ability both through the air and on the ground. While he is a phenomenal young talent, he’s rated on par with Baltimore’s current starter Joe Flacco. Say what you will about Flacco, but there should be some discrepancy between the two considering playing experience.

23 Danny Amendola – 85 OVR

25 Madden 19 Ratings That Are Too Ridiculous For Words

You’re not reading this wrong. Playing for the Patriots can either do two things for a player at a crossroads; stick a fork in them or completely turn their career around. For Amendola, it’s the latter.

Amendola has never once gotten close to 1,000 yards in a season. Nor has he ever gotten close to five touchdowns or more in a season. Yet for some reason, he’s rated as a top talent at his position. It’s a very strange decision, to say the least.

22 Josh Norman – 87 OVR

25 Madden 19 Ratings That Are Too Ridiculous For Words

Josh Norman is one of those players who’s mouth often overshadows his play. The boisterous defensive back made a name for himself with the Panthers, and is thought of as one of the leagues top corners. But recently, Norman has been heard way more than he’s been seen on the field.

Last year wasn’t all that great a campaign for Norman and you’d expect his rating to reflect not only last season, but the last couple seasons which he’s shown clear signs of regression. Taking all of that into account, Norman’s rating is still too high.

21 Matt Ryan – 89 OVR

25 Madden 19 Ratings That Are Too Ridiculous For Words

Last season was certainly a noticeable step back for Matt Ryan after an MVP campaign in 2016. His numbers were pedestrian and he often struggled – as did the entire Falcons offense. It seems as though this is reflected in this year’s ratings which sees his cut significantly.

While last year was an off one for the Falcons superstar, such a huge dip for a player of Ryan’s caliber who’s shown he can be consistent is kind of disrespectful. We’ll keep a close eye on what he’s able to do this season.

20 Marcus Mariota – 79 OVR

25 Madden 19 Ratings That Are Too Ridiculous For Words

A popular young quarterback, Marcus Mariota certainly has his fair share of fans around the league. 2017 wasn’t a good year for him statistically, and plenty of football fans took note of that – but despite this, his Madden 19 rating is still kind of off.

Mariota is a rising star in the league and should definitely be rated based on that. Heck, there are some rookie passers that are either rated evenly or higher than him. That’s a strange call no matter how you look at it.

19 Andrew Luck – 87 OVR

25 Madden 19 Ratings That Are Too Ridiculous For Words

We’re going to stay in the AFC South for this next entry with a name any football fan is familiar with. Andrew Luck came into the league with high expectations, and at times when he’s been on the field has shown flashes of brilliance.

Injuries have been a problem for luck recently, and we haven’t seen much of him due to that. There are even whispers that he won’t be 100% for this upcoming season. So given all of that, this rating seems to be based more on what the developers think he’ll be more than anything else.

18 Ezekiel Ansah – 83 OVR

25 Madden 19 Ratings That Are Too Ridiculous For Words

This is absolutely crazy. There’s no other way you can look at it and not come to the conclusion that this rating is way off. Ansah is a standout defensive end in the league and has only really had one bad year statistically.

2017 was one of his best efforts that saw him post a lite 12 sacks. So how exactly can EA justify giving him such a pedestrian overall? It seems like a huge oversight on their part.

17 Carson Wentz – 86 OVR

25 Madden 19 Ratings That Are Too Ridiculous For Words

Carson Wentz was playing lights-out football last season at an MVP level until a late-season injury took him out for the year. The Eagles still came out on top, and many are looking to Wentz to continue where he left off.

That’s why this rating seems low. Sure he got injured, but the numbers he was putting up prior to that would justify at least a 90 overall for any quarterback with a full season under his belt. So why did Wentz get shortchanged?

16 J.J. Watt – 98 OVR

25 Madden 19 Ratings That Are Too Ridiculous For Words

J.J. Watt is a dominant force in the NFL and one of its biggest stars. He’s a force on defense, the heart and soul of the Texans franchise, and a versatile red zone target on short yardage offensive situations. But he’s rated way too high.

His numbers throughout his first five years are incredible, and show that he has the ability to be remembered as an all-time great on defense. But over the last two seasons, Watt has dealt with season-ending injuries early on in the year. With only 1.5 sacks in the last two years, rating him among the best defenders in the league is tough to justify at this point in the year.

15 JuJu Smith-Schuster – 80 OVR

25 Madden 19 Ratings That Are Too Ridiculous For Words

Just so we’re putting this out there right off the bat, this is definitely a deserved improvement when compared to Smith-Schuster’s Madden 18 rating of 73. JuJu came into the NFL as a rookie with a lot to prove and you can believe that he did all of that and more in 2018.

JuJu was a force on Pittsburgh’s offense and totaled nearly 1,000 yards his rookie campaign. While this rating isn’t terrible, we expected it to be a little higher – especially given how he managed to cement himself as the Steelers’ number two option in the passing game.

14 Will Tye – 77 OVR

25 Madden 19 Ratings That Are Too Ridiculous For Words

This next entry might have some of you scratching your heads. It certainly had that effect on us. Will Tye isn’t really a well-known player in the league, but is probably a familiar name to many Giants fans out there. Aside from some notable moments with Big Blue, Tye hasn’t had all hat remarkable of a career.

Yet despite only managing a handful of receptions and barely over 30 yards receiving last year – Tye was given the incredibly generous rating of 77 for this year’s entry. This is a guy who has less than 1,000 career receiving yards with an overall rating higher than some veterans.

13 D.J. Fluker – 72 OVR

25 Madden 19 Ratings That Are Too Ridiculous For Words

Not many top 15 picks pan out all that well in the NFL – and for the entirety of DJ Fluker’s stint in San Diego, it seemed as though he would be part of the majority that failed. Fluker had a ton of expectations put onto his shoulders upon entering the league – expectations he failed to meet in the Golden State.

Fluker took a one year to prove it, and though he wasn’t elite the Giants rushing attack was better with him in the line-up. In fact, Fluker actually regressed this year. Sure he wasn’t extraordinary, but 2018 was a great year for the young offensive lineman.

12 Derek Carr – 83 OVR

25 Madden 19 Ratings That Are Too Ridiculous For Words

Derek Carr’s career picked up a ton of steam relatively early on. A second-round pick that many thought could go anywhere in the first, Carr proved himself as a rookie and showed Raiders fans glimpses of franchise quarterback play that they’d been missing for years.

Carr has been on a steady rise since his rookie year and is seen as one of the most promising young passers in the league. He had a bit of an off year last season, and it seems as though that greatly affected his rating this year. It seems a little harsh – especially since his numbers were pedestrian at worst.

11 John Ross – 76 OVR

25 Madden 19 Ratings That Are Too Ridiculous For Words

John Ross exploded onto the scene during last year’s scouting combine. His blazing 40-yard dash propelled him into the top ten of the 2017 draft, but expectations were not met during his rookie campaign.

Ross was expected to help the Bengals passing attack. But a mixture of injuries, mental mistakes and apparent issues getting within the coaching staffs good graces limited him to just 12 total yards on the season. You’d think that all of that would reflect in his rating, but it seems not.

10 Tyrod Taylor – 81 OVR

25 Madden 19 Ratings That Are Too Ridiculous For Words

Tyrod Taylor has had to fight his way towards being a starter in the NFL at the leagues most scrutinized and competitive position. Taylor came into prominence as a starter for the Buffalo Bills. Now with the Browns, Taylor is seen as more of a bridge quarterback for number one pick Baker Mayfield.

It seems as though that train of thought is reflected in his ratings this year as well. Both Taylor and Mayfield have the same overall rating. That’s crazy. Taylor certainly hasn’t been a top 5 talent in his time as a starter, but he’s been solid. To put a rookie on par with that is disrespectful.

9 Charles Sims III – 77 OVR

25 Madden 19 Ratings That Are Too Ridiculous For Words

Well, we’re back with another lesser known player that seemingly received a decently high rating for no reason whatsoever. Simms is someone who’s thrived in rotation with the Bucs, but hasn’t really done all that much as a starter. Simms is a great complementary player, but this rating seems a little bit too high.

When you consider that he hasn’t done all that much during his pro career, Sims’ 77 overall rating is a little puzzling. It’s not that he’s a bad player, but as far as launch ratings go – this is pretty high for a guy who hasn’t done much and is coming off a bad year statistically.

8 La’el Collins – 72 OVR

25 Madden 19 Ratings That Are Too Ridiculous For Words

The Cowboys are pretty well known around the NFL for having one of – if not the best – offensive lines in the league. A huge part of that has been their ability to bring in young talent across the line over time. Though he was initially expected to be a fairly high draft pick, concerns about possible legal issues surrounding La’el Collins caused him to go undrafted.

Dallas pounced on the raw young talent, and he’s been featured in their rotation ever since. Though he hasn’t really had a splash season yet, Collins is a solid offensive lineman who deserves a little better than this.

7 Alec Ogletree – 74 OVR

25 Madden 19 Ratings That Are Too Ridiculous For Words

For a while, it seemed as though Alec Ogletree would be a staple on the Rams’ defensive unit for years to come. A vocal leader and hard-hitting presence in the middle of the field, Ogletree was a staple in St. Louis/Los Angeles, albeit a diminishing one.

Ogletree, now with the Giants, is primed to take a huge leap forward and lead the G-Men’s struggling defense. He had a fairly decent year last season, which makes this rating all the more puzzling. You can be sure that this rating will increase noticeably throughout the season.

6 Barkevious Mingo – 78 OVR

25 Madden 19 Ratings That Are Too Ridiculous For Words

This is a no-brainer here, especially when you think of what kind of a career Mingo has had up to this point. Mingo is one of many high draft picks who hasn’t really met expectations since coming into the league.

Rather than developing into a Von Miller kind of pass rusher, Mingo has proven himself a better rotational option. Yet despite this, he still has a fairly high rating when he’s done little to prove the prior train of thought regarding his use on the field wrong.
