25 New Pokémon That Are Absolutely Impossible To Catch (And How To Catch Them)

What could possibly be said about Pokémon franchise that hasn’t already been said? A smash hit Japanese collectible card game turned into an anime series. The series was eventually adapted by GameFreak and Nintendo and transformed into an ultramassive video game franchise. Debuting on the Game Boy all the way back in 1996, it came from humble beginnings. A child-friendly RPG with the ability to appeal to gamers of all ages. The first two games, Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue, only offered a rough approximation of the Kanto region and a poultry 151 collectable creatures.

Regardless of any technical limitations, the games were extremely successful and proved to be the impetus for a myriad of similar virtual adaptations of the property. Twenty-two years on, there’s almost more games in the series than anyone could hope to keep track of. Though primarily a genre for Nintendo’s handheld consoles, gamers over the years have been treated to such classic extraneous titles as Pokémon Stadium on the Nintendo 64 and Pokémon Colosseum on the GameCube. While outsiders may view these games as little more than examples of children’s media, those who grew up in the late 90s and early 2000s will doubtlessly recognize these titles as some entries into one of the most prolific and well-liked franchises in gaming history.

Those bygone games may have been great, but Pokémon games are still being released, and with them comes a slew of questions about how to capture some of the more illusory creatures hidden within these titles.

Here’s 25 New Pokémon That Are Absolutely Impossible To Catch (And How To Catch).

25 Mimikyu

25 New Pokémon That Are Absolutely Impossible To Catch (And How To Catch Them)

Mimikyu was a bit of a controversial addition to Pokémon Sun and Moon. We love the design and the concept surrounding the creature, though it doesn’t seem to be for everyone. Mimikyu is a ghost/fairy type Pokémon who seems to have been shunned by both the human and Pokémon populace.

As a result, it attempts to disguise itself as everyone’s favorite yellow rodent Pikachu in an attempt to make friends. It’s almost sad, really.

While not really a powerhouse Pokémon capable of striking terror in the hearts of your opponents, it can be an interesting addition to your collection. Plus, if you are planning on catching them all, then you have to get your hands on one of these spooky little beings.

Mimikyu can be found on Ula’ula Island in the abandoned Thrifty MegaMart on Route 14. Bear in mind that you actually have to have beaten the island challenge before you can find a Mimikyu, so it’s not quite something that can be done off the bat. The trial actually involves the player taking pictures of ghost type Pokémon inhabiting the apparently haunted site, which is, in our mind, as close as we’ll ever get to a Pokémon/Fatal Frame cross over. Simply fend off the hordes of ghastlys and golbats you are likely to come across, and you’ll eventually happen upon this relatively rare new Pokémon.

24 Sandygast/Palossand

25 New Pokémon That Are Absolutely Impossible To Catch (And How To Catch Them)

We remember a time not too long ago when fans of Pokémon feared that the series’ creators may have been running out of ideas. Following the reveal of some admittedly lame creatures like Klefki, the keychain Pokémon, and Vanilluxe, the two-headed ice cream cone monstrosity from gen 5. There’s dozens of others, while the first few generations did have a few stinkers, none of those creatures felt quite as creatively bankrupt.

The same thing could be said about Pokémon Sun and Moon’s Sandygast and Palossand. Obviously inspired by beachside sand art, these creatures don’t tend to get the love they deserve. They are also sort of rare and can’t be found in many locations, so adding one to your Pokédex could be thought of as a bit of an achievement. Usually found on the Hano beach area near the Hano Grand Hotel on Akala Island, exploring the area grants you a 20% chance at encountering these guys at any time of day. Are they a bit goofy looking? Well, if you would consider a literal sentient pile of sand with a shovel lodged in its head to be goofy, then, yes, very much so. We find these quirky Pokémon to be kind of cute, though, and they are necessary editions to everyone’s collection of generation 7 creatures.

23 Tapu Fini

25 New Pokémon That Are Absolutely Impossible To Catch (And How To Catch Them)

Tapu Fini is probably our favorite of the Island Guardians introduced in Sun and Moon. We’re not exactly sure why we like the design so much, but the blue and black mermaid aesthetic it has going on makes us giggle. It’s also an exceptionally rare and powerful Pokémon, as you may well have guessed, so you’re definitely going to want to save a master ball for the occasion.

Tapu Fini can be found at the end of the Ruins of Hope on Poni Island and is definitely a battle relegated to only the most dedicated Pokémon Trainers. This battle may only take place after you have defeated the Elite Four and it’s really a quest meant for those who are trying to extract every last bit of enjoyment from the title. Finishing the main storyline is no reason to put down these great games, of course, so you can rest assured that there’s still plenty of content out there for anyone looking to really test their skills.

When battling this rare Pokémon, it will immediately raise a veil of misty terrain which prevents status conditioning for the first five moves, so don’t expect to stun your enemy into submission. It is also, like all of the other Island Guardian Pokémon, level 60, so make sure that you’re really bringing your A-game when you go up against this thing.

22 Magearna

25 New Pokémon That Are Absolutely Impossible To Catch (And How To Catch Them)

Magearna is a bizarre Pokémon. The creation of a group of ancient scientist, this hauntingly-designed being has the ability to accurately perceive the emotions of other Pokémon and will do everything it can to help an ailing creature. Kind-hearted by nature, it is also a master of disguise and actually harbors the ability to transform into a Poké Ball when sleeping. It’s also the first pocket monster to have the Soul Heart Ability, which allows it to raise its Sp. Attack by one each time another Pokémon in the arena faints. It’s an extraordinarily useful ability which any good trainer worth their salt will be able to use to their advantage.

One downside to this new creature is that, as far as we know, it isn’t actually available in-game.

You can, however, get your hands on your very own Magearna by utilizing Pokémon Sun and Moon’s unique QR code scanning feature. Though this makes obtaining Magearna somewhat easier than normal, it makes the capturing experience feel pretty artificial. Much of the thrill inherent in the “gotta catch ‘em all” mentality stems from hunting down and defeating these rare Pokémon, and happening upon a QR code in real life doesn’t really compare to tracking a critter down in the game.

21 Alolan Sandshrew/Sandslash

25 New Pokémon That Are Absolutely Impossible To Catch (And How To Catch Them)

One of the most interesting new features of Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon would be the introduction of what the game refers to as Alolan Pokémon. These unique new creatures are actually variations of previously seen Pokémon and can be thought of as something of a remix of old concepts. We’ve all seen Muk and Grimer before, but, with a totally different moveset and a cool new rainbow coat of paint, they almost feel totally new.

For whatever reason, we have always been a fan of Sandshrew and Sandslash from the first generation. We suppose we find the design to be equal parts cute and, in the case of the creature’s evolution, intimidating, which are, in our mind, the two most important aspects of any Pokémon. Imagine our surprise when, following the release of Sun and Moon for Nintendo’s 3DS, it was discovered that these two actually had some polar opposite counterparts. Get it? Polar opposite—you know, because, instead of the usual ground type, they are ice and steel type? We’re hilarious, we know.

Alolan Sandshrew/Sandslash are Pokémon Moon exclusives, so keep that in mind as you head to Mount Lanakila on Ula’ula Island. There’s a 30% encounter rate there and these Pokémon are far from the toughest to defeat, so you should be able to get your hands on one pretty easily.

20 Alolan Vulpix/Ninetails

25 New Pokémon That Are Absolutely Impossible To Catch (And How To Catch Them)

Just as the Alolan variants of Sandshrew and Sandslash are exclusive to Pokémon Moon, the type-defying variants of fan-favorite fire types Vulpix and Ninetails are exclusive to Pokémon Sun. If you want these particular Pokémon but don’t have the correct version, then they may only be accessed by means of trading with other players. While that is a bit of a drag, it’s one of the small details that separates the two experiences.

Alolan Vulpix is more or less a simple replacement for Alolan Sandshrew and Sandslash in Pokémon Sun, which means that it may be found in the same place on the same island with the same encounter rate. Keep in mind that Mount Lanakila isn’t actually accessible until relatively late in the game, which makes Pokémon like Sandslash or Ninetails valuable late-game creatures.

Though your choice of Pokémon essentially comes down to whichever version of the game you happen to own. We would be remiss without a cool, alternate-reality version of Sandshrew and Sandslash in our game. We’ll definitely either need to find someone to trade with or give up and purchase the other version of the game. Maybe we’ll just wait until the rumored Nintendo Switch port of the game is released.

19 Rockruff/Lycanroc

25 New Pokémon That Are Absolutely Impossible To Catch (And How To Catch Them)

Rockruff and its evolved counterpart Lycanroc are probably some of the most interesting Pokémon to be introduced in Pokémon Sun and Moon. Rockruff is a straight up adorable rock type, but it harbors a slightly terrifying secret. It has two evolutionary forms dubbed the “Midday” and “Midnight” forms and the evolutionary process is dictated by the time of day in which the evolution occurs. Once Rockruff reaches level 25, there is a chance it may evolve. If this transformation occurs between six in the morning and six at night, it will turn into the cute yet fierce midday form. However, if it evolves in the wee hours of the morning, anytime between six in the evening and six in the morning, it will take the it’s terrifying midnight form, which features a darker color pallet and glowing red eyes.

His name is an obvious play on lycanthropy and the concept of lunar transformation.

Rockruff can be found in Farthest Hollow. Farthest Hollow is an area of the game which can be found not too far from your in-game house. Not your real-world house, unfortunately, though that would be awesome. You’ll need to smash through a few boulders, which can be done by summoning a Tauros via the Ridge Pager you get from defeating Kahuna Hala near the beginning of the game.

18 Solgaleo

25 New Pokémon That Are Absolutely Impossible To Catch (And How To Catch Them)

Solgaleo is an incredibly rare legendary who just so happens to be featured on the box art of Pokémon Sun and its variant Pokémon Ultra Sun. This is by no means an easy catch and, as you would imagine, it is an encounter which occurs very, very late into the game. In both the original and ultra versions of Pokémon Sun, Solgaleo is the prevalent, deity-esque mythical Pokémon and is unavailable in Pokémon Moon except through trade.

In the original version of the game, Solgaleo was accessible via an encounter at the Altar of the Sunne. But, the ultra version of the game requires the player to defeat Necrozma at the conclusion of the game. After that, interested parties should travel to Iki, a town located on Melemele Island. Situated close to the Ruins of Conflict will be a bridge on which you first encountered the character Lillie. This time, she’ll be hanging out with the fabled Solgaleo, and she’ll ask if you are up for a battle. That’s your chance to nab this almost all-powerful creature for yourself. Since this must be done following the end of the game, players pursuing this Pokémon are likely going for a complete set for Sun and Moon and are likely more than up to the task of capturing this celestial being.

17 Lunala

25 New Pokémon That Are Absolutely Impossible To Catch (And How To Catch Them)

Lunala is the box legendary and counterpart to Solgaleo in Pokémon Moon and Pokémon Ultra Moon, as you are doubtlessly already aware. It should be stated that you are actually required to capture Necrozma, before continuing on to capture this other famous pokémon. Though Necrozma may appear to be intimidating and was unobtainable prior to the end of the game, he’s actually a pretty easy pokémon to get your hands on once the time comes. Capturing him will grant you Ultranecrozium Z, as well as N-Solarizer and N-Lunarizer, which are resources vital to the capture of the box legendaries.

After all of that is said and done, go speak with Gladion on Mount Lanakila. He will inform you that Lillie is looking for you on Mahalo Trail. You’ll recall that Mahalo Trail is located on Melemele Island, which makes the encounter a bit of a homecoming. As we have already mentioned, the battle between yourself and the legendary Lunala shouldn’t be that difficult. Though it is a level 55 legendary pokémon and will certainly prove itself to be a challenge. But. it’s nothing that you couldn’t get through. We would be willing to bet that most players actually managed to capture this legendary on their first couple of tries. If you didn’t pull that off, though, don’t get discouraged! Just keep a master ball handy.

16 Ultra Beast Pokémon

25 New Pokémon That Are Absolutely Impossible To Catch (And How To Catch Them)

Ultra Beast Pokémon might be one of the greatest reasons to purchase the Ultra variants of Pokèmon Sun and Moon, as they represent a major piece of post-game content and are sure to keep trainers playing way after they actually see the final credit crawl. The quest starts when, after waking up in your room following the end of the main questline, you encounter a mysterious man known as Looker, who is later revealed to be a member of the International Police. Throughout this quest you are given insight on what the Ultra Beast Pokémon are and just how much the International Police actually knew of their existence.

For the unaware, these special and exclusive creatures are actually extradimensional.

Going with the theme of realities separate from our own, the player is tasked with hunting these things down and capturing them. In many cases, you’re actually supposed to capture more than one of these things, which can make for a set of particularly grueling challenges. It also introduces levels of plot complexity players of games like Metal Gear Solid or perhaps Call of Duty Zombies will be at home with.

All-in-all, this quest is an excellent way to extend the lifespan of the game, and it primarily provides something to do for those waiting for the much anticipated reveal of a potential Pokémon-related release on the Nintendo Switch.

15 Jangmo-o

25 New Pokémon That Are Absolutely Impossible To Catch (And How To Catch Them)

Jangmo-o is honestly a pretty rare find. We’ll explain why in a moment, but suffice to say that coming across one of these guys in the wild is a pretty rare experience. While we don’t know everything about Pokémon Sun and Moon or the ultra versions, we do know that, if you want to catch ‘em all, you really, really need to work at it.

Jangmo-o can be found in an extremely remote location near the end of the Poni Island Canyon. There’s a very small patch of grass in which wild Pokémon may be found a short distance from the first trial area, and it’s here that wild Jangmo-o may be found. If the totally remote and difficult-to-access location weren’t enough, Jangmo-o only has a teeny tiny five percent encounter rate. That means that you’ll be prowling around that little patch of grass for quite a while and it can get tiresome pretty quick.

It may not seem worth it initially and, to some players, it won’t be. This is admittedly a quest only for the true completionists or the totally insane. Jangmo-o’s base stats are nothing to write home about. They’re kind of underwhelming, to be honest. Still, if you really want to see anything and everything there is to see in these games, then it’s a necessity.

14 Salamence

25 New Pokémon That Are Absolutely Impossible To Catch (And How To Catch Them)

It may not seem that difficult to get your hands on a salamence in Pokémon Sun or Moon. One only need take a trip down route three to encounter a wild bagon in the grass. Catch him in what’s got to be a fight made difficult in terms of not accidentally KO-ing him right away, get him to level 50, and you’ll have a Salamence join your party.

That’s quitter talk, though. You’re not actually catching a Salamence, you’re simply capturing a pre-evolutionary form and leveling him up yourself. It’s a legit tactic, but you can’t really say that you caught a Salamence yourself. To do that, you’ll have to exploit the game’s new S.O.S. mechanic. Based on our experiences, Totem Pokémon will always do this, but pokémon encountered in the wild are also known to rely on this mechanic from time to time. They are essentially allowed to call in backup if they get too low on health and, though it can be a bit of a nuisance in the early game, experienced players can use it to get their hands on some rarer creatures. Bagon, for instance, will very rarely call for the help of a Salamence in these situations. Now, when we say rarely, we mean rarely. There’s about a one percent chance that Bagon’s evolved form will respond to his distress call. This means that if you really want to capture an actual Salamence, you are really, really going to have to work for it.

13 Mareanie

25 New Pokémon That Are Absolutely Impossible To Catch (And How To Catch Them)

Mareanie is one of the rarest seventh generation Pokémon that is capable of being caught in the wild, and pursuing it is more so a test of patience than a test of skill. With that in mind, Mareanie can’t be caught until you receive a fishing rod and a Lapras Ride Pager from Lana on Akala Island. Given that she’s the captain of the game’s second trial, you likely know exactly where to find her (and probably have the necessary equipment already, as well).

Ride out into the Melemele Sea until you come across a fishing spot. Once you have found one, use it, and there’s a chance you’ll encounter a wild Corsola.

If not, simply return to Route One, and then head back to the Melemele Sea to fish again. Once you come across the Pokémon you’re looking for, lower it’s health without KO-ing it. Eventually it was send out a distress call, and another pokémon will show up to defend it. There’s only a 20% chance that said Pokémon will be a Mareanie, so you’ll have to be patient. If you accidentally knock out the Corsola, you’ll have to start everything over, so be careful. If you are diligent enough, you’ll eventually come up with one of these rare creatures.

12 Salazzle

25 New Pokémon That Are Absolutely Impossible To Catch (And How To Catch Them)

Salazzle is an incredibly rare Pokémon, but not for the reasons you might think. Though Salandit, the pre-evolutionary form of Salazzle, is actually encountered fairly often in the wild, the creature’s evolved form is rare because only female Salandits can evolve. Males simply stay in their pre-evolved forms forever, which makes getting your hands on one of these things ridiculously frustrating. Salandits are also mostly male, with a mere 12.5% chance of encountering a female.

It’ll take a good amount of traversing the same area over and over again in the hopes of coming across a wild Salandit and then it’ll take even longer until a female reveals herself. However, capturing one of these things and evolving it will grant you bragging rights the likes of which rival some truly legendary Pokémon. It will also reveal just how much time you have on your hands, though, so it may be best to keep your adventures under wraps. What’s worse is that, though some trainers will swear by it, Salazzle isn’t quite the powerhouse its rarity might imply it to be. So, prepare for a bit of disappointment once you finally have this thing fighting on your side. Happy hunting!

11 Cosmog

25 New Pokémon That Are Absolutely Impossible To Catch (And How To Catch Them)

A cosmological bag of gas resembling that one super weird-looking alien from Rick and Morty, Cosmog is about as rare as can be in Pokémon terms. It can only be found once the game has been finished and the player has captured the legendary box art Pokémon for their version of the game. Once that has been done, you’ll need to report to the Altar of Sunne or Moone at the opposite time of day of the version of the game which you are playing. That is to say that, if you are playing Pokémon Sun, go to the altar at night. If you’re playing Moon, head there during the day.

Once that’s done and you have your game’s box legendary in your party, you can access a new world via the Ultra Wormhole. This place is known as the reverse world, ostensibly named because it will be the opposite time as whatever time it is in the real world. Crazy, we know.

Once there, hitch a ride on Charizard to the Lake of Sonne or Moone on Ula’ula Island and make your way to the ruins. Once inside, your Solgaleo or Luana will see an image of each other in some kind of a Sun and Moon crossover. After that, you’ll find Cosmog sitting atop the altar. You don’t actually have to fight him, either. He’ll just peacefully join your party once you approach him.

10 Wimpod/Golisopod

25 New Pokémon That Are Absolutely Impossible To Catch (And How To Catch Them)

All aspiring trainers starting out in Pokémon Sun, Moon, or either of the game’s Ultra variants ought to make it a point to learn which pokémon can’t be caught in the wild. If you’re looking to max out your PC boxes with unique creatures, then you’ll sooner or later have to face the fact that a small number of Pokémon just can’t be encountered naturally in the game.

This Pokémon sort of makes the “gotta catch ‘em all” slogan a lie.

Most pocket monsters who can’t be found prowling through patches of grass across Alolan can either be traded for with other trainers or acquired via evolution. Such is the case with Golisopod: this beastly bug/water type can’t be caught in the wild, so you’ll have to resort to catching the Wimpod, its pre-evolutionary form. While it can be encountered on Route 8, Poni Breaker Coast, and in the Poni Wilds, it is extremely unique in that it won’t actually be hidden in patches of tall grass. Wimpod will actually be hanging out in the game world and you’ll literally have to run into it to engage it in battle. Be careful, as it’ll scurry away into its nest once it spots you, so you’ll have to be a bit crafty if you want to approach this wormlike Pokémon.

9 Dratini/Dragonite

25 New Pokémon That Are Absolutely Impossible To Catch (And How To Catch Them)

Alright, I’ll admit that I’m bending the rules a bit here—Dratini and Dragonite aren’t exactly new entries to anyone’s pokédex, but any trainer would be remiss should they complete the game without getting their hands on one of these rare, elusive creatures from the first generation. Though not strictly considered to be a legendary Pokémon, Dratini and Dragonite should be thought of as an absolutely necessary part of any trainers collection.

They’re also pretty rare in Pokémon Sun and Moon, and there’s basically a zero percent chance that you’ll stumble across them in the wild. That’s because they can actually only be found in one lone fishing spot which can be found directly north of the entrance to Poni Meadow from Poni plains. The encounter rate for this rare being is also a mere 10%, so be prepared to spend a good chunk of time fishing in the hopes of coming up with this thing.

Though it isn’t really all that special, we think it’s great they the game’s devs saw fit to include some of the Pokémon of yesteryear in 2016’s 3DS release. It introduced a bit of nostalgia to a game which, to some veterans, feels much to separate from its predecessors.

8 Any Shiny Variant

25 New Pokémon That Are Absolutely Impossible To Catch (And How To Catch Them)

One of the greatest thrills of opening a new pack of Pokémon cards back in the day was catching a glimpse of a rare and coveted holographic card. Though that didn’t necessarily mean that you had come into possession of a particularly powerful creature, it still allowed for some bragging rights. We can’t exactly recall, but we think we may have had a holographic oddish card back when we used to collect those things.

That sort of excitement was introduced to GameFreak’s handheld game series beginning with generation 2, but their presence is much more strongly felt in some of the more recent games. In modern Pokémon iterations, fully 3D models have replaced the dated yet endearing sprite work of the older games and the new polygonal models really help to show off the visual distinctions between normal and shiny specimen.

Unfortunately, there really is no hard and fast method for getting your hands on shiney Pokémon. In Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon, the most productive method for acquiring shiny Pokémon makes use of the S.O.S. mechanic. There is usually about a one percent chance that any creature responding to an S.O.S. call will be shiny, so the odds aren’t really in your favor. But, that actually works out much better than simply hoping to come across one in the wild.

7 Drampa

25 New Pokémon That Are Absolutely Impossible To Catch (And How To Catch Them)

We know that we risk sounding like an old by saying this, but we really don’t find too many of the seventh generation pokémon all that appealing. It seems to be a complaint that many older fans of the series bring up. Pokémon are either not visually distinct enough from their previous generation counterparts, or their designs are way too out-there to take seriously. While we’ll point to quirky creations like Chandelure, Garboder, or Cofagrigus, we’re willing to admit that even some of the Pokémon from generation one are pretty stupid looking. Like, you guys are aware that Exeggutor was literally just a pile of eggs, right? You don’t really get more creatively bankrupt than that.

That said, we feel like generation seven’s Drampa strikes a good balance between being unique without overdoing it.

A normal/dragon type, it would also make for a pretty good ally. Dragon type Pokémon are often coveted for their resistance to most other Pokémon types. It can be found in a cave on Mount Lanakila on Ula’ula Island, but it is found in Pokémon Ultra Moon exclusively. So, if you happen to have picked up Ultra Sun or either of the original releases, you are out of luck. Maybe this will provide just enough incentive to shell out the extra money for this version of the game.

6 Minior

25 New Pokémon That Are Absolutely Impossible To Catch (And How To Catch Them)

Minior in many ways feels like a recreation of the second generation’s psychic-type unknown. Unknown had a massive amount of variations—28 in total—while Minior has a comparatively smaller seven total variations. Keep in mind, however, that that’s still a lot of variety for one Pokémon. Both entities are a source of celestial mystery, as well. While unknown typically acted in completely baffling ways whenever they showed up, minor is said to form by gathering particles from space, only falling to Earth when they have gained enough mass. Wild versions will appear cocooned in a large shell which, though it can be broken, helps the Pokémon to maintain an air of mystery.

I’ll assume that it is possible to capture every variety of this creature in the wild, but it would be an arduous task. Minors is known to use self destruct, much like an electrode or fortress from previous generations. This can make getting your hands on them pretty challenging if you aren’t quite sure what you’re doing. Catching all seven of them would be quite the task. The best route to take for those who really feel the need to own every color of Minior should probably resort to Pokémon breeding. While that’s certainly not a fool-proof method, it’ll ought to prove to be a good amount easier than toiling away in the tall grass, hoping to stumble across the full Minior color spectrum.
