The Disney Channel original series explored the young teenage spy/hero Kim Possible. Along with her best friend Ron Stoppable, her friend and tech adviser Wade and the mole rat Rufus, Kim traveled the world fighting villains and stopping threats of world-ending levels. She did all this while balancing a high school life, from cheerleading to graduation and more. Hailing from a super smart family filled with doctors and geniuses, she used her natural born talents to protect the innocent and become the teenage and female icon she has become to young women all around the world. However, despite how amazing her character was and the powerful social movements her show created for an entire generation, not even Kim Possible herself is without faults or hidden secrets.
Many aspects of the show and the characters have remained a secret all these years. The show nearly suffered the same fate as other Disney shows due to bizarre and unrealistic rules that prevented shows from advancing. Characters were created from the strangest of inspirations, and heroes nearly became villains in truly creepy and dark ways. So it’s time to call me, beep me, if you want to reach me, because today we are going to explore the twenty-five secrets the creators of Kim Possible wish they could bury. 25 Save A Dance
While the appeal of stardom and fame can be very appealing to a young person with dreams of being an actor, the one thing young men and women don’t always realize is that there is always a price to being famous. There are going to be things you miss out on that most kids your age get to experience. One of the prices for fame is sacrifice. You have to give up a good portion of the life you led before. Kim Possible star Christy Carlson Romano learned this the hard way when she became the titular star of the show. She was forced to miss her prom due to her busy schedule with recordings. The only thing that came close to resembling a proper prom moment came when she recorded the voice over work and song for the prom scene in the Kim Possible Movie: So The Drama.
24 How About A Heads Up?
It might surprise some of you to know that it came as a shock to the showrunners to learn that the show had been renewed for a fourth season. Disney hadn’t told the showrunners themselves, but instead, they had to find out through the grapevine. They were left scrambling to put together a story for the fourth season but made it happen and left the finale open-ended for a possible fifth season.
This time, however, the network failed to pick it up for a new season, and the show ended.
It just amazes me that the network didn’t keep the showrunners in the loop on what they were thinking about for the show’s future. This hiccup also led to the breakdown of the 65 episode rule, which Disney had used to force shows to end after 65 episodes had aired. Kim Possible proved to be a breakout show in more ways than one.
23 Left Behind
A hero’s job doesn’t only include saving innocent civilians. No matter how much it may frustrate them or cause problems later on, a hero also has to save a villain from themselves. How many times could Batman have left the Joker to fall into an explosion the Joker caused, but instead saves him and sends him to jail? Well, Kim Possible herself does this on her show as well, but on two separate occasions, we can see her take a dark, almost vigilante type of turn. When facing Drakken and Shego on two occasions, she leaves them behind to face a possible watery demise. Although she leaves them to possibly drown, the show doesn’t focus on these facts, and she faces them again in the show, so we can assume they survive. However, this shows she was prepared to go down a very dark path in her heroic career.
22 The Ron Ban
While many countries around the world have become more progressive with the content of their television programs being aired. However, not all programs are welcomed around the world. Some shows can find themselves banned outright for the most basic or strange of reasons. However, most shows that get banned usually have to do with more grown-up, live-action action series that involve risque topics. One network you’d never expect to find getting slapped with a ban is the Disney channel.
The last show you’d expect to be banned would be Kim Possible.
Yet that’s exactly what happened when the episode “Ron the Man” was banned in MENA, (Middle East and North Africa). This was because the episode revealed that Ron was Jewish, and thus was banned from the Arabic nations. Consequently, this led to the episode not airing in Poland until 2010 because they got their Disney Channel feed from the MENA feed.
21 Fame Begot Misfortune
Fame can affect people in various ways. Some find themselves enjoying life with little to no problems to worry about (in the public eye), while others are subjected to more public displays of personal turmoil. This can extend not only to the stars of this show, but to the singer who made one of the catchiest Disney theme songs on the planet, and quite possibly the universe. One of the biggest draws of the show was the catchy theme song, “Call Me, Beep Me” by Christina Millian. A year after the song premiered, the singer began dating actor Nick Cannon. Sadly, their relationship fizzled out and she ended it, citing that he cheated on her several times. However, he claimed that the relationship ended because it was becoming too much like a Christian romance he was once in. Either way, it seems fame doesn’t always bring a happily ever after.
20 Evil Coffee?
There are a lot of things in animated shows or films that should not be featured. These properties tend to be for children, and subjects related to violence or grown-up activities tend to be a little much for a children’s show or film. These topics are understandable to forbid on a children’s show.
However, there are some subjects I’ve come across that are banned from television shows for children that seem a little odd to say the least.
One of the strangest and most out there facts that the creators probably wish they could bury has to be the fact that Disney forbade the villain Drakken from drinking coffee. That’s right, apparently coffee is the work of the forces of evil, because the company told the show writers he couldn’t be seen making or drinking coffee. Instead, they wanted him to drink chocolate milk, and thus the running gag “Coco Moo” was born.
19 Senior Moments
Something we didn’t see all the time back in the day but that we see now is that world renowned, award winning actors are starting to appear in properties you’d never expect.
I mean, who would have ever expected to see actresses like Jane Fonda star in a Netflix original series?
Who would have thought Andrew Lincoln, who had been famous for his role in Love Actually, would become the zombie fighting leader Rick Grimes on The Walking Dead? One of the all time great actors Ricardo Montalban found himself taking on the role of the villain Senor Senior Sr. The actor is known for his roles in Star Trek, Planet of the Apes, and even Spy Kids, and so grabbing an actor of his caliber for this show was a major feat. However, the actors health grew worse after five episodes of filming the show, and so he was forced to be replaced by actor Earl Boen.
18 Disney Double Duty
It’s amazing to think about, but the actors we know for certain roles were not the only ones to audition for these parts. Just because we can’t imagine someone else in a role doesn’t mean they didn’t nearly cast a completely different actor for an iconic role. While everyone knows Christy Carlson Romano as the voice of Kim Possible, she wasn’t always the number one contender for the role. You see, the actress wasn’t yet out of her high school years, and was juggling three acting gigs when she was cast. While she was popular after her role as Ren Stevens on Even Stevens, there was another Disney Channel actress that was up for the role. Her name was Anneliese van der Pol, and she was the network’s first choice for the role of Kim. However, she opted out of the role, taking on instead the role of Chelsea Daniels in the hit Disney channel show That’s So Raven!
17 The Pet Dilemma
Have you ever stopped to notice that a lot of animation related projects in Hollywood feature a pet sidekick for the main protagonist of that project? Whether or not they are talking pets or just an emotional support tool for the character’s development, these shows nearly always tend to have pets for these characters that become icons of their very own. I’m not sure where the evidence came from, but Disney executives came forward and told the showrunners of the show that they needed a pet sidekick for the show.
They claimed pets were a must have for any successful animated show.
So the show runners complied, but not without getting a little dig at the Disney executives. They created Rufus, the mole rat. They did this so that anyone who talked about the character would have to use the word “[unclothed]” when doing so.
16 When Women Attack
While Kim Possible is the teen hero everyone wants on their side, have you ever stopped to ask yourself just what exactly she is capable of? We know she tried to leave her foes to fend for themselves while they were in mortal danger, but if she had no qualms or morals to hold her back, what would she do to her enemies? One episode titled “Emotion Sickness” kind of took a lot of moral turns. It involved Kim and Shego being planted with mood altering devices known as moodulators, and having their emotional states altered several times within a day. It gets to a point where they become so enraged that they try to end the lives of Ron and Drakken. Although they explain that it’s the devices causing them to do this, the fact that their emotions made them capable of such a dark and cruel act is scary to think about.
15 No Free Will Allowed
While this show has always been one-geared towards children, there are some characters or plot lines that could easily translate into a more grown-up comic book arc or even a more modern animated show. One of the darker multi-episode arcs in the series happens to be the season 2 story “Sitch In Time.” In it, the villains Shego, Drakken, Monkey Fist, and Duff Killigan, manage to harness the power of time travel using an ancient monkey idol.
However, Shego double-crosses everyone and transforms the world to become a truly nightmarish world.
In it she has become this megalomaniac leader of the world who has forbidden free will and forced shock collars on people to make them compliant, otherwise, they are sent to a detention center to receive “re-education.” It’s a scary scenario and shows the truly frightening depths this villain is willing to go to in order to attain her goals.
14 Puberty Blues
Replacing actors on a television show is nothing new in Hollywood. Kids get older, actors pass away, and scandals rock Hollywood that force show writers to figure out creative ways to replace them. However, you sometimes come across a story that just seems too strange to believe. Stories of actors being replaced for the weirdest of reasons. However, it may surprise you guys to know that an actor who made a name for themselves on a hit Disney show was replaced because they hit puberty. Yeah, the actor Shaun Fleming was replaced after the shock announcement that the show was renewed for a fourth season. His voice began to change, and as he was playing the twins, Tim and Jim Possible, he was replaced by actor Spencer Fox, who was six years younger than Fleming.
13 Making A Villain
In a show about teen heroes battling the forces of evil, it’s important to distinguish yourself not only by creating a truly wonderful hero, but an equally nefarious villain. While this show featured a lot of very memorable villains, there was always one that stood out amongst the pack. Much like Mojo Jojo did for the Powerpuff Girls, and Mandark did for Dexter, there was one villain that made this animated show work.
The most famous villain on the show is definitely Drakken.
The villain is known for his campaign of terror around the world, but what exactly was his reason for hating Kim Possible? It turns out her father, Doctor Possible, was responsible for creating the villain. Her father and his friends in college laughed at the young Drakken, who attended school with them, after they discovered his plans to make a robot girlfriend. He swore vengeance on the Possible clan after that.
12 Anger Management
What makes the hero stand out from the rest of the pack? Is it because they are perfect? Is it because they are powerful and put themselves in harm’s way to save the innocent? No, it’s because a hero is like everyone else, flawed. Yet, despite these flaws, they overcome their personal difficulties and face the danger head-on anyway. Even when they themselves mess up, they push on to become the heroes we all need them to be. This extends to this show, where Kim Possible herself is the hero of the show, and yet she herself is not perfect. It turns out the titular hero isn’t as perfect as she appears. Despite her bravery, her athleticism and ability to balance her job as a secret agent/superhero with school, she has been proven to have control issues, often getting angry when she loses control of any situation.
11 Trophy Case
There are always going to be villains in a heroic property like this show that are eviler than others. Villains who don’t focus on the typical world domination, money, or power motivations, that other villains focus on. Like the world-renowned Michael Caine said in the film The Dark Knight, “Some men want to watch the world burn.”
One of the more ruthless villain duos the teen hero faced on the show has to be Warhok and Warmonga.
The two villains were aliens from the planet Lowardia, and went up against the teen spy on multiple occasions. Well, it turns out the alien pair had plans for Kim Possible. In a grisly turn of events, they revealed they wanted to end the life of the titular hero, and then mount her on their wall as a trophy. They treated her like an animal and they were the hunters. Really disturbing.
10 Fantasy Girl
One thing that has always sadly been missing from popular culture until more recently has been characters that empower others. In this regard, I mean female heroes, heroes of color, or heroes who represent the LGBTQ community. While a handful of characters have come forward in recent years, (Falcon, Wonder Woman, Vixen, etc), there were few teen female heroes to empower young people back in the day. That is, until this show came around and gave people a true feminist icon! Kim Possible has become an icon of sorts, one of the original female animation heroes to emerge in the late 90’s/2000’s era. However, her origin with the showrunners is not exactly pure. It turns out that she is the ultimate creation of what the creator’s dream or fantasy girl looked like in high school. It’s a little weird or creepy to think that the female hero was a male fantasy after all.
9 Define The Relationship
It’s not uncommon to see fans get together and pair two characters together they think to belong together romantically. Of course, this also happened to this popular teen hero show. Fans of the show for years shipped the pair of best friends Ron and Kim. They were in the fight together and went on many adventures that brought them closer together. While the two always had chemistry, it wasn’t until the fourth season that they truly explored their relationship.
It turns out that the showrunners never intended to bring the two together or explore their relationship.
However, the shocking fourth season renewal sent the writers scrambling for ideas, and they realized it would make sense to finally explore it. In the end, they stayed best friends who happened to be dating, but it’s amazing that without that shocking fourth season renewal, the shippers out there would have been very disappointed.
8 A Villainous Destiny?
It’s always interesting to see the comparisons critics will make with shows. Sometimes you’ll come across a review or article about a show and see the critic make parallels and connections between two shows or characters that could not be further apart from one another. Yet, you can’t help but start imagining what this show would look like if it were more like Batman. For this show, in particular, someone made a very interesting comparison between Kim and Ron and another duo: Batman and The Joker. That’s right, this critic said that due to the seriousness of Kim and Batman and the humorous nature of Ron and The Joker, the two pairs must be similar. It’s a little weird to think about, all things considering. Is Ron meant to become an evil villain in the future? Will the relationship between the two teens end in misery, sending him over the edge a la The Joker?
7 Drakken…Calm Down
How often do we come across superhero stories that feature a rivalry between a hero and villain, and then we stop to ask ourselves what has made this villain loath the hero as much as they do? Why exactly does Lex Luthor hate Superman? What drives Loki to constantly battle his brother Thor? These are the questions that drive devoted comic book and superhero fans to dive headfirst into a hero’s lore.
It’s not something we ever stop to think about but have you noticed just how much Drakken hates Kim?
I mean, we know about his history with her father, but instead of being your normal animated villain with plans of world domination, he spends a lot of time and focus on trying to end Kim’s life. It’s a little disturbing that in a kid’s show she has been nearly blown up, constantly tied up, and nearly ended by the villain several times. YIKES.
6 Ron The Villain?
When it comes to animated kids’ shows like this, fans tend not to over analyze or look at certain aspects of the show. It’s a world of villains, teen heroes, and mole rats, fighting crime, after all, so why nitpick at tiny little details? Well, maybe it’s time we start looking at some of the darker aspects of these shows? If the previous statement about Ron is true, and he is similar to the Joker, then this next fact is a little strange. You see, an episode of the show saw his good-willed nature get switched with Drakken’s evil nature, and Ron became a villain while Drakken became good-natured. Okay, we’ve seen this setup a million times. However how weird is it that he’s a lot better at being a villain not only more than Drakken ever was, but better at villainy than being the good-natured soul he usually is?
