26 Awesome Things Fans Forget About Final Fantasy

Everyone always makes the same joke over and over again about Final Fantasy never actually being the final fantasy. Or the final of anything. There are 15 main series games and almost 30 spin-offs, sequels, and mobile games. But for the haters who make fun of the geeky title that’s sort of become synonymous with nerds, we say shame on you, they’re awesome. There’s a reason there are 15 of these games and it’s because they’re the best.

Sort of like how Mario is the best of the platformers, or at least the most popular. Final Fantasy does some of the greatest characters and story of any video game out there. And they sort of invented the greatness of turn-based conflicts and battles. Just think of all the great heroes that have come from this series. Even better, think of all the iconic villains that have come from this series. Kefka and Sephiroth, just to name a few.

Whether you’re an ultra fan of the series or just someone who’s played one of the games, there are probably a bunch of things that you have forgotten. Some of you might even think this list is foolish because you would have never forgotten an entry that we list. But then that will just mean that you’re as big a fan as we are and that’s pretty cool. Let’s hang out sometime.

26 Cloud Is A Clone Of Sephiroth

26 Awesome Things Fans Forget About Final Fantasy

One of the upsetting pieces of information learned by fans of the series is that Cloud is actually just a genetically engineered clone of Sephiroth. In SOLDIER, the military of the game, warriors are infused with Mako energy and Jenova cells. Mako being the life energy of the planet and Jenova being the Ancient being that lived on the Planet years ago. Cloud is still a human, he’s just a bit different than the rest of us. He’s got all sort of stuff inside that makes him lose his mind and fly off into space and whatnot. Did you forget?

25 Cecil Becomes The Ultimate Paladin

26 Awesome Things Fans Forget About Final Fantasy

At the beginning of Final Fantasy 4, Cecil is the famed dark knight of the Red Wings. He went all over the place destroying villages and fighting monsters with his special dark knight powers. What people seem to forget about this game is that in order for Cecil to become a better warrior and truly defeat all the bad guys, he has to change. And by change, we mean he has to turn into a Knight of Light otherwise known as a Paladin.

24 There’s A Real FF2 And FF3

26 Awesome Things Fans Forget About Final Fantasy

For some reason, the games in the Final Fantasy series were released out of order on the Super Nintendo and two of them weren’t released at all. Number 2 was actually number 4 and number 3 was actually number 6 and number 4 was actually number 5. What people seem to forget is that there was a real Final Fantasy 2 and 3 released in Japan. And they are pretty good games. Maybe they weren’t as awesome as their American released remakes, but they were still part of the team.

23 You Got To Choose Your Party In The Original

26 Awesome Things Fans Forget About Final Fantasy

Before there were super in-depth storylines and characters, the first game in the series started off with the player being able to choose their team of four. There was the choice of the Warrior, Thief, Master, White Mage, Black Mage, and Red Mage. You can choose any group you want. Four of the same guy or four different soldiers. That was the most fun part of the game, making your own crew. There were different strategies attached to every team you could think of.

22 The Epic Black Mage Village In FF9

26 Awesome Things Fans Forget About Final Fantasy

There’s a point in FF9 where the player realizes that the world is much bigger than just the original continent you start on. When you travel the world and visit a bunch of new places the best one is without a doubt the Black Mage Village. It’s exactly what it sounds like. It’s a village filled with and only inhabited by Black Mages. They’re clones or dolls or whatever but they still managed to put a place together and thrive. Not to mention the music was awesome too.

21 FF4: The Moon

26 Awesome Things Fans Forget About Final Fantasy

At the end of Final Fantasy 4, the group has to travel to the moon to fight the end boss. This is a game where you start off on the surface of the planet, then go underground to the lava world where all the dwarves live. All that traveling going to hell and back to then have to fight the end guy on the moon. It’s pretty creepy up there too. All the enemies are super angry and strong and it’s the first time in a game in the series where you got to leave the planet.

20 Biggs And Wedge

26 Awesome Things Fans Forget About Final Fantasy

Biggs and Wedge are side characters in the series that show up in many of the games as different unrelated characters other than their names. They’re probably most famous for the form they take in the picture above in Final Fantasy 7. They never really act as playable characters, but it should be noted that the reason they are even in the game is that they are named after Luke Skywalker’s pilot teammates in the Star Wars movies. Bet you forgot about all that.

19 Chocobos

26 Awesome Things Fans Forget About Final Fantasy

So maybe Chocobos aren’t the most forgettable thing in this series and in fact may be one of the most well known. But if you ever played a game in this series where Chocobos weren’t featured and rideable, you missed them. There’s nothing inherently special about Chocobos other than they are horse sized birds that can’t always fly. But they are mystical creatures and they often have something to do with making the game easier.

18 Aeris Was Supposed To Be Revived (In The Japanese Version)

26 Awesome Things Fans Forget About Final Fantasy

This is something that totally should have been possible in the American version. Most of us who knew she was going to pass in the game decided to not use her or waste time leveling her up because we knew it would never amount to anything. Yeah, some people had fun playing with her but that was just experience that could have gone to someone who was going to stick around for the entire game. Would have been great if the Americans didn’t take this from us.

17 Moogles

26 Awesome Things Fans Forget About Final Fantasy

Moogles are another thing that sort of act as a mascot to the series that most people don’t forget about. But just in case you had forgotten about the little mouse bears, we added them to the list. Some people don’t realize how much Moogles changed in the series. In earlier games, they are sort of stocky and have slanted eyes. But in later more graphically enhanced games the are thinner, hairier, and have big anime eyes.

16 Yuffie And Vincent Are Optional

26 Awesome Things Fans Forget About Final Fantasy

Everyone loves Vincent Valentine. Everyone always talks about how super cool and dark and handsomely brooding he is. But what they fail to mention is that he doesn’t even need to be in the game at all. He’s an optional character and so is Yuffie.

Not sure why they made these characters optional but it sort of adds some reality to the game. Like, hey, if you don’t travel to this area and make these choices, you may not make as many friends.

15 Kefka The God Of Magic

26 Awesome Things Fans Forget About Final Fantasy

Even though Kefka is the subject of many of my articles, people still seem to forget that he becomes the God of Magic. How many other video game characters or book characters can claim to hold such an awesome title? In the universe, there as to be some constants such as force and gravity. These things exist and there is probably a god that rules them. Well, let’s just say that if magic does exist, then it’s got its deity already picked out.

14 The Rat’s Tail

26 Awesome Things Fans Forget About Final Fantasy

This entry is most likely forgotten by the younger fans because it’s the most important item in the very first game of the series. The Rat Tail is a special item offered to the Dragon Lord so that the characters you’ve chosen can level up. We’re talking serious level up though. Not a Rare Candy. The Warrior turns into a Knight, the Thief turns into a Ninja, the Black Belt turns into a Master, and the Red, White, and Black mages turn into Wizards.

13 Classes And Jobs

26 Awesome Things Fans Forget About Final Fantasy

In various games within the series, there are characters that have no set skills unique to them. Instead, you give them a job or class and as they level up they learn skills and attributes associated with that specific job. The skills they learn can be transferred to another class or job as well. So you can have a Knight who holds two swords like a ninja or you can have a ninja that knows how to heal their friends. It makes for some powerful builds.

12 The Leveling Systems: Sphere Grid, Etc.

26 Awesome Things Fans Forget About Final Fantasy

Most games have a pretty normal experience and level based system. But some of the games in the series go way more in depth as to what that experience gains you. That’s what people should be taking away from this series. The variety. There are 15 games in the main series and in an effort to not make the games repetitive or stale the developers try new things. Whether it’s a brand new storyline completely different from the others or the gameplay and fighting styles.

11 The Summons

26 Awesome Things Fans Forget About Final Fantasy

One of the coolest additions to these games has always been the summons and giant monsters/gods that help or fight against the players. These creatures are almost always taken directly from real-world myths and legends. Whether they are directly referenced by their names like Shiva, or they just represent Satan and demons like Ifrit, there is definitely a lot that goes into the creation of these summons. They only get more and more creative as the series continues.

10 The Undertones

26 Awesome Things Fans Forget About Final Fantasy

In every game, there is some sort of religion or cult that rises or plays around in the background. In some of the games, the religious figures or leaders are the bad guys and are at the forefront of the plot. The point is that most of the people who play these games forget how similar some of these religious acts and groups are to the real world equivalents. Not that that is a cheap trick or anything since influence comes from the real world anyway.

9 Greatest Video Game Music

26 Awesome Things Fans Forget About Final Fantasy

This entry right here is near and dear to all of our hearts. Whether you realize it or not, this game series has some of the best music ever created in the world. Not just in video games but in the entire world of music. The composer of these games, Nobuo Uematsu, is considered to be and also called, the Mozart of Video games. That’s a pretty sweet title and often overlooked. These games take like 60-100 hours to beat. That music better be on point.

8 Hidden Characters: Gogo And Umaru

26 Awesome Things Fans Forget About Final Fantasy

Another set of optional characters comes from the sixth game in the series. Gogo, Umaro, and Mog are their names. Gogo is rumored to be one of the bad guys from earlier in the game who turned good to fight back against Kefka. Mog is someone who helps the crew early in the game and you can ask him to join you later on. And you should, because he’s the only one in the game who can calm and recruit the third hidden character, Umaro.

7 Blitzball And The Al Bhed

26 Awesome Things Fans Forget About Final Fantasy

The sidequests in the tenth game in the series were some of the very best. Blitzball itself was almost like a game all on its own. It was a little weird but once you got into it it was tons of fun and took some skill. On top of that sidequest, there was a whole foreign language the player could learn by collecting books of translation. This was the Al Bhed. Often times you go back through the game trying to translate what these steampunk people were saying.
