Dozens of restaurants across Europe are now serving 3D-printed steak made out of plant-based beef substitutes. 3D-printing is becoming increasingly popular with every passing year, with reports of 3D-printed guns, masks, and even homes often making the news. 3D-printed meat is also not unheard of, with scientists recently announcing the creation of 3D-printed ‘synthetic wagyu beef’ that they claim is similar in taste and texture to the real thing.

Plant-based meat substitutes have been on the market for several years now, but haven’t gained much traction among either vegans or meat-eaters. While the former complain that they taste too much like actual meat, the latter bemoan that it tastes nothing like the real thing. However, companies are now using newer techniques to create faux meat that they claim is delicious, good for the environment, and healthy for humans, while being cruelty-free.

As reported by The Independent, at least 30 high-end restaurants in London, Amsterdam, and Berlin are serving 3D-printed steaks to their patrons. The steaks are based on plant-based meat substitutes and are being supplied by an Israel-based startup called Redefine Meat, which says it plans to expand the availability of its products throughout Europe. The company hasn’t named every single restaurant that will have its vegan steaks on their menu but a report from The Independent suggests that celebrity chef Marco Pierre White will be serving it in his restaurants in the U.K.

The report further suggests that the 3D-printed steaks will cost anywhere from £20 to £30 (around $26.50 to $39) at White’s restaurants. It might seem a little steep at first but these are high-end establishments and the pricing is in line with what they charge for natural beef dishes. Alongside steaks, Redefine Meat is also reportedly selling ‘premium quality’ lamb kebabs, burgers, ground beef, and sausages to other restaurants across the Netherlands, the U.K., and Germany. The company claims that its plant-based meat offers the same culinary experience as real meat, but without butchering animals.

Redefine Meat also says that it is planning to bring its products to supermarkets in the near future, which should make it more affordable to a large section of society. However, there’s no ETA for when Redefine Meat’s vegan steaks will be available on supermarket shelves in Europe. There’s also no word on when (or if) the company is planning on expanding its operations to the U.S., but vegan steaks made out of meat substitutes may become a big hit globally if it’s priced sensibly and tastes just like the real thing.
