4A Games has announced that its next game in the Metro series will offer both single player and multiplayer options. The Ukrainian-Maltese game developer based in Sliema, Malta, first introduced Metro 2033, a first-person shooter created for Microsoft Windows and Xbox 360 gaming platforms, in March 2010. Since then, the series has added two sequels — Metro: Last Light and Metro Exodus — and remastered its first two entries in 2014.

The remastered Metro Redux included updated graphics and gameplay with all previously released downloadable content bundled. The new game being developed by the studio is being built for Gen 9 consoles and PC and will include a complete overhaul of the system’s engine and renderer, taking advantage of the new power, storage, and hardware supported ray tracing delivered by the new consoles.

4A Games, which recently partnered with Saber Interactive, is committed to ensuring a great story-driven single-player experience as well as a multiplayer experience set in the Metro universe. The company, however, has clarified that “We’re not looking at multiplayer as a box-ticking exercise, or to jump on some trend or bandwagon. As creators, we want to explore a multiplayer experience that makes complete sense in the Metro universe.”

The original Metro 2033, a first-person shooter survival horror game, was based on Dmitry Glukhovsky’s novel of the same name. In the game, which is set in the ruins of Moscow in the aftermath of a nuclear war, where survivors must subsist in underground Metro tunnels, players control Artyom, a man who must defend his home station against the lurking dangers within the Metro.
