Animated movies targeting children almost always receive sequels, and, while they’re sometimes warranted, other times, they absolutely aren’t.

There are so many animated sequels that fill multiplexes these days that sometimes it’s hard to even know what number sequel in the series they even are. Though the movies are fun, bright, and can lift audiences’ spirits for a couple of hours, many of them are completely unnecessary.

On the other hand, there are so many great animated movies that have created rich and original worlds that haven’t had the chance to show everything they have to offer, leaving many viewers wanting more.

10 Need: The LEGO Batman Movie 2

In The LEGO Movie, Batman completely stole the show, and it was only natural for the character to get his own movie. The LEGO Batman Movie is a hilarious, well crafted, and original take on the superhero, and it even did a few things better than the live-action Batman movies. There are so many more avenues for the character to go down, and, hopefully, it wasn’t just a one-and-done for the studio.

9 Don’t Need: Toy Story 5

Toy Story 3 arguably had the perfect finale, as the toys faced mortality with the most grown-up climax in a children’s movie, and some people thought Toy Story 4 was unnecessary. However, when the fourth entry in the beloved Toy Story series was finally released, it was another classy movie that served more as an epilogue to the third movie tHan anything. Now though, a fifth movie absolutely would be unnecessary, and now that Woody is out of the equation, there’d be a huge sense of detachment.

8 Need: Fantastic Mr. Fox 2

Fantastic Mr. Fox is a great stop motion movie directed by Wes Anderson, and it has a huge list of stars voicing the characters. Though Anderson went on to direct another stop motion movie, Isle Of Dogs, years later, the director unfortunately never returned to Fantastic Mr. Fox.

However, it may not be his decision, and the reason we haven’t seen a sequel is simply because it isn’t financially viable, as the original movie was one of Wes Anderson’s least successful movies in terms of revenue.

7 Don’t Need: The LEGO Movie 3

Following up the first The LEGO Movie was an almost impossible task, as the original was fuelled by creativity and showed how imaginative directors Lorde and Miller are, and it’s one of the best movies based on real life toys.

The second movie didn’t receive quite the same reception, as it was essentially more of the same thing, riffing on old jokes and not bringing anything new to the fold. Though the movies are great to look at, a third entry in the movie is absolutely inessential.

6 Need: Wallace And Gromit 2

The series has a load of short movies, which are how the characters first became popular in the 80s, but, in the 2000s, Wallace And Gromit finally got their much deserved full-length feature movie, and it received an overwhelmingly positive reaction.

Though the movie has gotten a spin-off with Shaun The Sheep, the original players in the series totally deserve a victory lap.

5 Don’t Need: Kung Fu Panda 4

With Kung Fu Panda being one of the best Dreamworks movies of the 2000s, the series continued that high quality throughout all three movies, which is unprecedented for a Dreamworks animated series. Since the last Kung Fu Panda movie was released, there have been no plans to greenlight a fourth movie, which is surprising, given the movie’s success and Dreamworks’ obsession with sequels. Yet, it’s the right choice, as the third movie ended perfectly.

4 Need: Zootopia 2

Being filled with metaphors about racism and many other prejudices, though they were extremely on-the-nose, Zootopia is one of the few animated movies that had a strong message that children could learn from.

Not only that, but those messages were wrapped in amazing animation, loveable characters, and an immersive world that could rival most Pixar movies, and a sequel should absolutely be on the cards.

3 Don’t Need: Shrek 5

Shrek has arguably seen the steepest slope in quality more than any other series over its four movies. The original movie remains one of the greatest animated films of all time, but, by the time Shrek Forever After came around, watching it felt more like a grind than anything. There are talks about a sequel and even the possibility of a reboot, but we can’t imagine that either would fare all that well.

2 Need: Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse 2

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse took the world by storm and seemingly came out of nowhere. The movie was the first success Sony saw with the character without the help of Marvel in almost a decade, and it to took the character to a whole other level, showing audiences something they’ve never seen on screen before: the Spider-Verse. Being about parallel universes, there’s so much the series can do, and the first movie was just the beginning.

1 Don’t Need: Cars 4

Not only do audiences not need Cars 4, but they didn’t need Cars 3, or Cars 2, and there’s even an argument to be made that they didn’t need the original Cars. As many intelligent and amazing original movies as Pixar have in its canon, Cars is the studio’s one franchise that feels like it was expressly made to sell merchandise, and the lack of artistry and tact is really unbecoming of the otherwise highly-praised stuido.
