5 Easter Eggs In Animal Crossing New Horizons

In Nintendo’s latest cult hit, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, players have found a solution to their quarantine boredom. There is finally an outlet for untold hours of creativity, adventure, and even gambling in the stalk market. If you’ve achieved everything you set out to do for the day, but still have some time to kill, the team at Nintendo has a few surprises tucked into the game that users are starting to find. Here are five of our recent favorites:

Zelda Ocarina

One of the most prominent titles in the Nintendo universe has been The Legend of Zelda, in all its various forms. Therefore, it isn’t terribly surprising that the team tucked in a little bit of Hyrule to greet players, and without a lot of prerequisites needed. Ever wanted your own Ocarina? Good news, they are fairly easy to track down in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. The recipe for this item arrives in the DIY for Beginners book sold by Timmy in resident services. Once learned, users only need 5 clay to assemble their very own Ocarina. Better yet? By pressing A, users can enjoy custom notes.

StarTropics Reference

Many will appreciate this Easter egg from 1990, an homage to the action adventure game StarTropics. In StarTropics, users are able to visit their uncle on the tropical island of Coralcola. In New Horizons, users are on their own tropical island, and continue to be visited by a washed up seagull named Gulliver. If players help Gulliver find his missing parts to his communicator, he will sometimes respond with, “Really!? Wow! I haven’t gotten a reception this sweet and bubbly since I washed up at ol’ Coralcola!”

Splatoon References

Nintendo has its very own third-person shooter franchise in Splatoon. This comical take on the popular genre continues to appeal to gamers of all ages, recently with Splatoon 2 selling more than 10 million copies. The New Horizons nod here is a little more vague, but hilarious to those familiar with both series. When catching a squid in New Horizons, users can be greeted with two Splatoon references, either, “I caught a squid! I had an inkling I might!” or, “I caught a squid, it’s off the hook!”. Inklings are the player / squid characters in Splatoon, and in Splatoon, there is a pop duo titled Off The Hook. Additionally, when New Horizons players bring Blathers a Eusthenopteron fossil, he states, “How do we resolve differences? Perhaps some sort of ink-squirting contest of champions?” Turf Wars anyone?

Super Mario Bros. 1UP

Anyone who has ever played a game in the Super Mario Bros. franchise would recognize the sweet, sweet sound of a one-up mushroom. Here too, Animal Crossing does not disappoint. When players find the money rock for the day, crank that volume for a little nostalgia. When gamers knock loose the money bags, they are greeted with the 1UP audio.

Alien Broadcast

We close out this list with an out of this world Easter egg. The prerequisite is a tv in your New Horizons house, and the ability to watch it at 3:33 AM. Or time travel. Or both? Either way, tune into your TV at this time, and you’ll enjoy a minute long extraterrestrial broadcast followed by static.
