5 Hidden Plotlines Everyone Missed In Pokemon Legends Arceus

Pokemon Legends: Arceus is a full-blown open-world game, complete with side quests and collectibles. With such comes the inevitable result that there will be story elements that some people might miss because they’re attached to events outside the main plot. After all, who has time to turn over every rock in every game?

We do, as it turns out (spoilers, there’s nothing behind the waterfalls), and we found a thing or two on our journey, the best of which were steeped in Pokemon lore that every player deserves to at least know about. Here are a few of the more interesting plotlines we believe most of you might’ve missed.

5 The Sea’s Legend

The quest to catch Manaphy and Phione is possibly the most obtuse reference in the game. In Diamond and Pearl and Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, there’s a library in Canalave City where you can read a book titled, “The Sea’s Legend” that lists off the specifications required for you to meet the Prince Of The Sea, which are as follows: A Mantyke, a Buizel, and a Qwilfish with huge spikes. It also informs you that the brave human teamed up with these Pokemon on the East Sea while it was “sunset streaked.”

Although structured as a story, these tidbits are intended to be used as instructions for you. Get your team together, including the Hisuian evolution of Qwilfish, Overkwill, which requires its own list of tasks to evolve, then travel to the eastern waters in the Cobalt Coastlands during the evening, then travel to a cave in the northern face of the Veilstone Cape, where you will meet the Prince of the Sea, Manaphy, and his cohort of Phiones.

The entire quest might as well be labeled, “seriously, just Google it,” because there’s no way we’re figuring out this multi-game scavenger hunt on our own. It is interesting to note, however, that it’s considered a legend in both the modern timeline and the Hisuian timeline, which means that the brave human in question was around long before any Pokemon game, including Legends: Arceus.

Some bits of content in Legends: Arceus are hidden behind challenges, others behind story beats, and others still behind paywalls. Two such examples of what you might miss if you haven’t paid up are the stories of Shaymin and Darkrai, neither of whom can be caught without first having a Sword/Shield (Shaymin) or Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl (Darkrai) save file on your Switch. While neither are necessary to complete Arceus’ sacred mission to “seek out all Pokemon,” it’s not explicitly stated that they’re not necessary, either.

Shaymin’s quest leads you to restore a beautiful garden in the Obsidian Fields, and Darkrai’s quest functions more like a creepypasta with a boss fight at the end. While both provide opportunities to catch their respective legendary Pokemon, they also serve as character-driven pieces that flesh out the world. For the first time in Pokemon history, too, it seems believable that these chraracters struggle to understand the magical creatures that coexist in their lands.

No Pokemon game is complete without a little unexplained haunting, and Legends: Arceus is no different. In Jubilife Village, there is a young woman by the name of Vessa who pleads with you to seek out and collect 107 purple wisps. The item she gives you to house the hidden spirits is clearly the base of Spiritomb, the ghost Pokemon first seen in Diamond and Pearl, so the end goal isn’t exactly a mystery.

Further, it should come as no surprise that a child begging you to collect spirits that were splintered across Hisui to seal away a great evil would potentially be a problem. Once the collect-a-thon is completed, Vessa leads you to the Shrouded Ruins, where she heavily implies that she’s the 108th wisp. Her last few words are ominous and never fully explained, but before they can be given any deep thought, she’s gone forever and Spiritomb arrives.

2 The Old Verses

Ursaluna is something of an odd duck amongst the Ride Pokemon because it’s the only one of them that does not open up new areas of the map for you to explore. Riding the monstrous bear might be faster than walking, but Wyrdeer is even faster still and can jump, even. However, Ursaluna proves its usefulness by being the coolest iteration of the series staple the Itemfinder. All you have to do is ride around on the galumphing beast to dig up buried treasure.

Amongst these hidden items are scraps of a larger poem, with each piece being known as an Old Verse. The Old Verses are rhyming couplets scattered across the entirety of Hisui that when are all put together, paint a colorful picture of the land as an even more ancient traveler knew it to be.

1 The Ancestors

Hisui is, as we know, the ancient precursor to the modern Sinnoh region. While this is evident in the landmarks and general topography, it’s perhaps more cleverly solidified through the characters that populate the villages and settlements. Many of the region’s inhabitants bear a striking resemblance, whether in face or name or personality (or all three), to characters that roam Sinnoh in the present day.

For instance, Commander Kamado of the Galaxy Team organization is confirmed to be a distant relation of Professor Rowan. Volo, the fanatical Ginkgo Merchant, looks more than a little like Cynthia, the Elite 4’s Champion. The Diamond Clan’s Warden Mai is a dead ringer for Marley. So commonly do these characters seem to be connected that it’s odder if one of them doesn’t seem to have a descendant.
