Not only that, but Yugi’s deck and Ash’s Pokémon collection are both memorable in their own ways and help to define those characters.
On that note, it wouldn’t be farfetched to hear “what if?” discussions concerning these characters and what monsters from either universe they would want to have. In particular, were Yugi to enter the world of Pokémon hunting and capturing, what kind of team would he build?
10 Would Want: Umbreon Because Of Their Type & Experience With Humans
Not only is Umbreon’s pre-evolution form a Pokémon that should exist in the real world, but it would also land a spot in Yugi’s team. With duel monsters like Dark Magician, Summoned Skull, and others, Yugi would gravitate to Umbreon because of its type and its familiarity with dark creatures.
On that note, online resource Bulbapedia claims that the Umbreon species are accustomed to being around people despite their dark typing. Considering how games like Pokémon Coliseum featured the main protagonist with an Espeon and Umbreon companion, it wouldn’t be surprising that Yugi would want one.
9 Would Not Want: Salamence Because Of Their Uncontrollable Attitude When Triggered
Considering how Salamence is a Pokémon many argue should not exist in the real world because of its questionable habits, Yugi may wish to stay away from this dragon. Salamence may be a powerful, fearsome, and dangerous creature Yugi could use to intimidate people, but the Salamence species carefree nature can cause Yugi trouble.
According to Bulbapedia, the Salamence species tend to be hotheaded and easily-triggered creatures. If a rival Pokémon were to anger it, Salamence would undergo an uncontrollable rampage destroying everyone in its way. To avoid harming innocents, Yugi would avoid Salamence.
8 Would Want: Gardevoir Because They Will Remain Loyal & Protect Him From Harm
Although the Gardevoir species aren’t one of the most-powerful pets and animal companions in anime, their loyalty and respect toward trainers would encourage Yugi to catch one. Considering Yugi’s attachment to his Dark Magician and Dark Magician Girl duel monsters, he would bond with Gardevoir and its magic abilities.
Despite Gardevoir’s dangerous abilities like summoning mini black holes, it can serve as another form of protection for Yugi, especially in the real world. Gardevoir’s teleportation powers are icing on top if Yugi ever wanted to travel anywhere.
7 Would Not Want: Snorlax Because They Can Cost Him Food & Money
Despite Yugi’s attachment to weird duel monsters like Kuriboh, he wouldn’t want a Snorlax in his Pokémon team. Although Yugi isn’t an anime character that loves food as much as Goku from Dragon Ball, he wouldn’t want a large Pokémon like Snorlax wandering around eating everything in sight.
According to Bulbapedia, Snorlax requires 900 lbs worth of food every day, and knowing Yugi’s lack of food obsession may cost him a lot of funds to keep his Snorlax from going on a rampage. Thus for the safety of Yugi’s wallet and potentially his deck, he wouldn’t want a Snorlax.

Not only will Aegislash provide a great offensive and defensive role in Yugi’s team, but its supernatural powers like Shadow Sneak or Shadow Ball will spark Yugi’s interest further. Essentially, he’ll gain access to a Pokémon that can not only protect him from harm but will remind him of his many victories in the past.
5 Would Not Want: Gengar Because They Are Pranksters That Go Too Far
Despite Yugi’s fondness for dark duel monsters in Yu-Gi-Oh!, Gengar’s trickster, heinous, and rude antics may anger and annoy Yugi immensely. According to Bulbapedia, the Gengar species love to frighten and pull pranks on innocent Pokémon and people without regretting their actions.

Sometimes the Gengar species will even create traps to steal the life energy within people. T avoid losing his friends to this dreadful, careless Pokémon, Yugi wouldn’t want it on his team.

Although Keldeo may resemble creatures who are like Yugi’s worst cards in his deck, this mythical Pokémon’s sense of justice and caregiving attitude will strike Yugi’s core. Keldeo’s desire to better itself alongside its never-give-up attitude will also encourage and remind Yugi to keep moving forward.
Not only will Keledo motivate Yugi, but it can also be a formidable Pokémon to have on his team. According to Bulbapedia, the Keldeo species tend to endure severe battles to awaken its true powers. Considering how Yugi’s curiosity toward unlocking the truth behind mysteries, he’d want to assist Keldeo in awakening its power.
3 Would Not Want: Primeape Because They Lack Self-Control & Have Anger Problems
Despite Primeape being a formidable fighting type Pokémon, its hotheaded attitude and tendency to lose control will steer Yugi away from capturing one. According to Bulbapedia, triggering Primeape’s rage is an easy task, as giving it the wrong-look will set this Pokémon on a rampage.
Not only that, but the Primeape species will get stronger the more someone angers it. Though this may sound reasonable to Yugi at first, Bulbapedia claims Primeapes will chase after something that angered it and won’t stop until it’s given that individual a thrashing. Knowing the people in Yugi’s friend group, it wouldn’t be safe having a Primeape around.

Considering Yugi’s adoration for magic users and those with psychic abilities, he’d gravitate toward having an Alakazam on his team. Not only will Alakzam’s various moves it can do intrigue Yugi’s interest in the Pokémon, but it would essentially give Yugi a real world version of Dark Magician.
On that note, the Alakazam species can become highly intelligent as it ages. According to Bulbapedia, Alakazam can have an IQ of over 5,000 and has strong memorization capabilities. Even better, if Yugi were to channel Alakazam’s mega evolution, he’d attain an alternative future-seeing power like Ishizu’s Millennium Necklace.
1 Would Not Want: Magikarp Because They’re Completely Useless Inside & Outside Of Battle
Despite Yugi’s love for utilizing weak duel monsters and making them seem more powerful than they are, he wouldn’t want to train a Magikarp. When it comes to Pokémon games and anime, they often picture Magikarp as a weak-minded, useless Pokémon who loves to flop around.
According to Bulbapedia, the Pidgeot species often treat Magikarp as their daily food source, showing how defenseless and mindless these creatures are. Although Yugi could train a Magikarp to reach its deadly Gyarados evolution, he’d probably abandon the idea as soon as Magikarp comes out of a Pokéball, hopping and shaking its fins.
