Theoretically, Amazon Prime’s The Boys is supposed to be about the world’s superheroes. However, the reality of the situation is that the superhuman subjects of these stories are almost entirely not heroic at all. On the moral spectrum, most of the characters occupy the gray-to-black area, and even the best people haven’t been able to keep their hands clean.

However, there are a few who just genuinely want to do the right thing. Two of the most heroic characters in the series are the completely human Hughie Campbell, and the superhuman Annie January, better known as Starlight. But which one of them is the most heroic?

10 Starlight: Because She’s Sincere

In order to be a true hero in a world where Vought controls nearly all of the superheroes in the world, it does require some duplicity and an ability to mask one’s true self.

However, that just might be the most difficult aspect of turning on Vought for Annie. She’s a very honest and sincere person by nature, and that sincerity shines through no matter how hard she tries to hide it.

9 Hughie: Because He Doesn’t Let His Pain Destroy his Kindness

Hughie Campbell started his story as a seemingly meek and passive guy whose entire world was turned upside down when A-Train murdered his girlfriend.

After Robin’s death, Hughie was devastated and determined to get some kind of vengeance for the injustice towards his girlfriend. And although his pain was driving him, he didn’t let it make him into a darker or crueler person.

8 Starlight: Because She Refuses To Become Jaded

Like many other supes, Starlight spent most of her life dreaming of becoming one of the Seven, becoming a real hero.

But when she actually finally made the squad, she immediately realized that the whole hero team was a fraud, and in fact all of these heroes were at best useless, and at worst repugnant. But instead of letting Vought’s hero business grind her down, Annie decided that she could still be the hero she wanted to be.

7 Hughie: Because He’ll Do Anything For Those He Loves

Robin is Hughie’s initial motivation for taking down Vought and their team of superheroes. But once he became a sincere part of the boys, he kept fighting for them too.

Hughie’s best individual quality just might be his loyalty, and the ferocity with which he will fight for his loved ones. He might seem weak when it comes to defending himself, but he’s pretty tough when it comes to helping others.

6 Starlight: Because She’s Forgiving

Ever since joining the Seven, Starlight’s life has become insanely difficult, and nearly every person that she idolized or developed a relationship with betrayed her in some way.

But she’ll still help people like Billy Butcher even though he hates all supes, and she’ll forgive someone like Hughie for lying to her and using her because she understands why he did it. She’s extremely magnanimous towards those who have wronged her.

5 Hughie: Because He Believes In Justice

There’s a fine line between justice and revenge, but when Vought and A-Train refuse to acknowledge that Robin’s life was worth something, he won’t just leave things be.

And when he learns that Vought’s misdeeds go far beyond Robin, he is still willing to put himself on the line and fight for people he barely knows or doesn’t even know, like Becca Butcher or Starlight herself. He sincerely wants to right the wrongs of the world.

4 Starlight: Because She Always Does The Right Thing

The vast majority of characters on The Boys are far more morally ambiguous than anyone would expect superheroes to be, but the one person who consistently lives up to the superhero ideal is Annie.

She doesn’t always know the right choice to make, but she does always try to make the right choice, and she doesn’t often let her emotions get in the way of her morals.

3 Hughie: Because He’s Truly Brave

If someone can only be brave when they’re afraid, then Hughie might be the bravest person on the planet.

He’s always completely outmatched in nearly every dangerous situation he finds himself in, but he not only typically figures out a way to succeed, he will take risks and do whatever he thinks is necessary to get the job done.

2 Starlight: Because She Wants To Be A Superhero

Starlight was raised to be a superhero, and she has always wanted nothing more than to embody everything that a superhero is supposed to be.

And despite the fact that literally everything she believed about Vought, the Seven, heroes, and her own superpowers has been proven wrong, she hasn’t given up on her desire to do what’s right. She keeps fighting and keeps trying even when there’s nothing in it for her, because she simply wants to be a hero.

1 Hughie: Because He’s Not A Superhero

Before he met the boys, Hughie was never known for being strong or bold, but the most heroic thing about him might just be that he’s not a superhero at all.

Hughie is just a normal guy, but he was willing to go up against one of the most powerful corporations in the world and up against a team of insanely powerful superhumans in order to do what’s right.
