Given the added perks and prospect of hardcore fans experiencing OW in a new way, it’s an idea that some have pondered.

Blizzard producers Andrew Boyd and Wes Yanagi mentioned the potential of bringing OW characters to Nintendo’s own beloved multiplayer romp, Smash Bros Ultimate, and the studio seems to be keen on the idea.

Aside from the added perks of the Legendary Version of OW featured with the Switch port, another key inclusion for some might be the free 3 months worth of membership for Nintendo Switch Online. Given that a 3-month package for the Big N’s online service will typically cost you $8, this certainly makes for some pretty solid savings.

It all-but makes up for the increased price of the Switch version; not to mention grants you access to the usual online functionality plus a plethora of NES and SNES games at your disposal.

3 Pass: Inferior Graphics And Performance

Of course, one shouldn’t expect the supreme performance you might expect of a gaming PC rocking Overwatch at max settings. Still, even compared to other console versions, the Switch rendition of OW leaves a bit to be desired. Granted, a more stylistic, cartoony game such as this isn’t going to look blatantly awful or anything, yet there are some subtle weaknesses.

Not only are the textures a touch muddled compared to the sharper renderings of its counterparts, but the game is also capped at 30 FPS both docked and in handheld mode. Moreover, there have been reports of less-than-smooth performances when playing docked – which is likely how most will prefer to play the game.

It’s certainly still playable, but a fair bit rougher, which will be especially apparent to those used to playing on high-end PCs.

2 Rebuy: Portability

Ultimately, the major draw for the Switch version of Overwatch is essentially the same as it is for most Switch ports; its, erm, portability. While it may not be too easy playing at a Grandmaster level on the Switch’s smaller screen with its smaller joysticks, the sheer novelty and convenience alone make it worth it to some.

This is really the first time that gamers can get a chance to play this endlessly enjoyable FPS on-the-go (high-end laptop lugging notwithstanding). And while there is the factor of Overwatch being heavily online-oriented, it’s nothing a little phone tinkering can’t solve, as you can set up a mobile hotspot using your phone.

1 Pass: Digital Download Only

On top of its portability, Blizzard had the opportunity to make this Switch iteration of OW stand out in another key area. It could have been the only version of the game to be in the form of a physical cart. Not only did they squander this, though, but it’s also perhaps even worse than picking up the game on disc.

While there are technically boxed versions of OW being sold on Switch, all you get is a measly game code that you must punch in. Thus, you’re essentially buying a (slightly) glorified version of a digital game, which means you’re at the mercy of Blizzard and online connectivity just to gain access to your own game.
