Revivals can be a blessing or a curse for a show. If the show ended properly, then a revival could ruin that ending, happy or otherwise. However, if a series ended all too soon, like Swamp Thing, then a revival can serve as its savior.

When Swamp Thing was released back in 2019, audiences were elated to see the green monstrosity dredge up some horror, only for the series to be canceled before the end of season one despite being a sci-fi/fantasy show that was worth the audience’s time. Now, two years later, maybe it’s time to bring the series back to the surface or let it remain in the murky depths. Maybe alongside some other abandoned DC projects.

10 Needs Revival: Unfinished Storylines

Obviously, when a show like Swamp Thing is brought to a close all too soon, the series will end up with plot points and storylines unfinished or unresolved. As such, a revival could bring the unfinished storylines to a close and establish new ones.

When the first season ended, there were still so many loose ends to tie up and finish. From Avery still at large, Alec and Abby staying behind in Marias, Blue Devil leaving, and Jason Woodrue becoming Floronic Man, the possibilities for a new season are endless.

9 Doesn’t Need Revival: Cover-up

Of course, even though multiple storylines can be left unresolved, there’s always the off chance that they may never be seen again. A revival offers the chance to dive into these plots but that isn’t necessarily guaranteed for the series.

It’s highly possible that the show could ditch the old storylines altogether and establish new plot points and characters. While that would allow for the series to go in a different direction, it would also cover up all the amazing arcs and potential stories left behind in the canceled series wake.

8 Needs Revival: HBOMax

Now, to make a series like Swamp Thing requires something more than just good writing and acting. It needs a good-sized budget and studio to make everything click and come together and beyond the now-defunct DC Universe, HBO Max, a service that has some of the best shows from the 2010s, is one option.

Known for crafting large scale productions like Lovecraft Country and Raised By Wolves, the streaming service will be able to give the DC character his due and keep the amazing effects going. Heck, the story may even become better under the direction of HBO Max, depending on who’s in charge.

7 Doesn’t Need Revival: CW

While HBO Max is one option, it’s not the only one. See, when DC Universe went under, most of the high profile series like Titans (a series that HBO Max could change for the better) and Doom Patrol were transferred over. However, Swamp Thing and Stargirl were transferred over to the CW.

Although it’s possible that Swamp Thing will probably make it’s way over to HBOMax, it’s likely, since CW aired the episodes back in October, that the series could stay there. As such, the direction and effects may not be as solid on CW as they might be on HBOMax.

6 Needs Revival: Horror Element

Truth be told, it’s difficult to blend horror into the Superhero genre. Sure, some filmmakers have been able to inject some terror into movies and shows, none have been full-on horror save for stuff like Constantine and Swamp Thing.

While Constantine is somewhat dead even while its hilarious memes continue to thrive, Swamp Thing has the chance to rise up and be the face of horror for DC and whatever service it’s on. With the right amount of body horror and suspense that the original show offered, horror could live again in the comic worlds thanks to DC.

5 Doesn’t Need Revival: Gore Element

One of the key rules with horror is to never, ever, let the gore overtake the suspense and other elements. Yes, gore and body horror can always have a part to play. After all, they always add to the terror of any horror-oriented project.

Yet, adding in too much gore results in it becoming “gore porn”. Despite the first season managed to navigate the slippery slope without any problems, it always ran the possibility of becoming “gore porn”, something a revival could fall prey to if not done correctly.

4 Needs Revival: New Characters

One of the benefits of taking characters from a universe as large as DC means that there’s always the chance for writers and creators to rope in similar characters. For something so embroiled in the darker and more magical side of DC, the character possibilities are endless.

Whether it be a part of the small Lousiana town or in the rest of the world, the likes of Constantine, Zatanna, Deadman, and Etrigan could pop up in some capacity alongside the rest and maybe tie into the future Justice League Dark show alongside some other DCEU characters.

3 Doesn’t Need Revival: Too Many Characters

Then again, introducing new characters into a show is always a difficult task. Some shows manage to pull it off and the first season of the series did it pretty well, introducing Madame Xanadu, Phantom Stranger, and Blue Devil.

Yet typically with shows and movies the second time around is usually when the media goes big or goes home. Given that it would be the second outing for Swamp Thing, it’s highly likely the revival will go big or go home and may end up going home for good.

2 Needs Revival: Quality

What could be considered surprising about the DC oriented series was its quality. Granted, there are plenty of top-tier DC live-action shows, as should all comic-book related or otherwise media be, but the thing with Swamp Thing was how good it was.

The quality of the series was incredibly surprising, from the acting to effects to direction and story. The kind of vision taken to bring the story to life is something that the revival would more than likely bring to life again and maybe even boost it to an even higher level of storytelling.

1 Doesn’t Need Revival: High Quality

The only problem with replicating the same quality is the bar set. The bar that was set with the first season was high. Granted, it’s a bar that can be topped for sure but it can be surpassed if the same quality is utilized.

Even if the studio is the right fit or the characters are done the right way if the direction isn’t carried out just as well or even better than what was established in the previous season, then it’s likely that the high quality needed won’t be reached.
