As a show created by the same man who created The Simpsons, you can expect Futurama to have a certain level of ability to predict the future. It also has the added bonus of actually being set in the future; the very early days of the third millennium in fact.

There have been a few things Futurama has managed to predict about the current state of human existence, but a few that have missed the mark. Then again, we’ve got a lot of years left. There’s still time.

10 WRONG: Aliens

One of the main things Futurama predicted without really focusing on it, was introducing aliens. Leela is right there in front of our faces with her one massive eye, then we’ve got Kif and Zoidberg and Nibbler all taking part in adventures without anyone batting an eyelid.

This suggests that at some point in the universe of Futurama aliens merged with human civilization and became a normal part of everyday life. This, as far as we know, hasn’t happened on earth yet.

9 RIGHT: Miss Universe

5 Things About The Future That Futurama Correctly Predicted (& 5 That It Got Wrong For Now)

This might be the most specific prediction Futurama ever made. It’s probably their equivalent to The Simpsons’ Donald Trump presidential prediction (though not quite as horrifying and dangerous). In the episode, ‘The Lesser Of Two Evils’, a Miss Universe pageant is happening, with Zapp Brannigan accidentally crowns Leela instead of the competitors.

She has to be stripped of her victory, as it is revealed that Miss Vega 4 is the true winner. This is almost the exact same situation that happened at Miss Universe 2015 when Steve Harvey accidentally named the wrong winner and had to take the crown back and give it to the person who was supposed to have won in the first place…

8 WRONG: Planets For Morality

5 Things About The Future That Futurama Correctly Predicted (& 5 That It Got Wrong For Now)

One of the more far-out suggestions made by Futurama about the future is the idea of moral alignments being connected to specific planets. The one main example the show gives is that Zoidberg was drawn to Earth, as it most closely represented his moral alignment.

However, there are places to go if you’re permanently aggressive and in need of a fight, or if you’re eternally happy and kind. Even the neutral planet (which has an embassy on Earth) exists for if you’re just… neutral.

7 RIGHT: Smart Watches

When Futurama was first airing, mobile phones were relatively new technology and the idea of smartphones was a thing of the future. Sci-fi shows have been predicting our technology for years (iPads, for example) but Futurama managed to provide a precursor for the smartwatch many years early.

They called them wrist computers, but they were literally just computers on your wrist, which is pretty much exactly what an Apple Watch is, right?

6 WRONG: Floating Heads

5 Things About The Future That Futurama Correctly Predicted (& 5 That It Got Wrong For Now)

The concept of immortality is an interesting one these days. Of course, there have been rumors for years that Walt Disney was frozen before he died, and we’ve seen Carrie Fisher ‘brought back to life’ through special effects and clever cinema trickery.

However, the actual manifestation of Futurama’s take on immortality hasn’t exactly come into play on our planet yet. So far, as far as we’re all aware, celebrities don’t have their heads/brains placed in a vat and kept alive so they can still talk and be aware of their existence.

5 RIGHT: The Scope Of Ebola

5 Things About The Future That Futurama Correctly Predicted (& 5 That It Got Wrong For Now)

It seems like a distant memory given the scope of the pandemic we’re currently facing, but in 2014, the Ebola crisis was one that gripped the whole world. It may have received global attention, but Ebola didn’t spring into existence in 2014, it had been around for many, many years since and thus inspired the planet Ebola 9 in Futurama, a planet exclusively for those with Ebola.

After quarantined areas began appearing during the crisis, the idea of a planet for those infected didn’t seem like too distant a possibility.

4 WRONG: Parallel Universes

5 Things About The Future That Futurama Correctly Predicted (& 5 That It Got Wrong For Now)

If you look deep into some philosophical theories, you’ll find that there are a lot of people who believe an infinite number of parallel universes exist.

Each one with a different sequence of events that could range from being a totally different world to the exact same world as ours. Well, in Futurama, the idea of parallel universes is a known one that definitely exists. Our version of this exists in theory but has never been proven.

3 RIGHT: Star Wars IX

5 Things About The Future That Futurama Correctly Predicted (& 5 That It Got Wrong For Now)

While this particular prediction started life as a joke, it ended up, to everyone’s surprise, coming true. In one episode of the show, a sign outside a cinema says, ‘Star Wars 9: Yoda’s Bar Mitzva’. The Phantom Menace had been released relatively recently, so the concept of a ninth Star Wars film seemed pretty unlikely.

Enter Disney, and many years later we were given another trilogy, and as such, a Star Wars number nine. Yoda didn’t have a Bar Mitzva, but his voice was still very much used.

2 WRONG: Time Travel

5 Things About The Future That Futurama Correctly Predicted (& 5 That It Got Wrong For Now)

If time travel existed then we’d have travelers from the future visiting us every day, correct? Surely this means that it doesn’t and never will? Well, not according to Futurama. It is discovered that Fry is his own grandfather, as well as the uncle 30 and 32x over to Professor Farnsworth.

This sort of complex, paradox ridden existence hasn’t yet taken place on our Earth, and it probably never will, which suggests Futurama has gotten this one wrong.

1 RIGHT: Suicide Legality

A slightly more complex and weighty subject is that of suicide and its legality. For a while, the acting of committing suicide was a crime and therefore failed attempts could be punishable under the law.

These days, various countries have made pre-planned, intentional death something people with terminal illnesses can take advantage of to end their suffering. This was something Futurama suggested quite a while ago, with its suicide booth that could be publicly accessed by anyone.
