A young team is relied upon to save the world. Such a description describes both Disney Channel’s Kim Possible and Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender. For Avatar Aang, it was initially a matter of destiny and a century’s disappearance that lead Aang to face the Fire Lord. To master the elements, Aang must travel the world in search of teachers to help him learn water, earth, and fire bending before the Fire Lord can destroy the world. For teenage hero Kim Possible, it was a matter of a babysitting website and a typo. When Kim and Ron are accidentally called to help men in trouble, they come running. After successfully saving the men from the alarm system, Kim and Ron gain a reputation and continue to go on missions, eventually being known for saving the world countless times.

Each series brings humor to the world around it. But, they each feature danger that comes with the wish for world domination from each show’s antagonists. However, each series also does some things better than the other.

10 Avatar: Character Development

Part of what works so well for Avatar: The Last Airbender is how the characters are forced to grow up throughout the series. Aang, who spends the early episodes wishing to goof around instead of concentrate on mastering the elements, is asking severe moral questions about if he has it in him to kill Fire Lord Ozai in the series finale. Katara, who is not a trained water bender, in the beginning, has mastered and continued to grow by the end. Sokka, who was not a skilled fighter, worked on training with a sword and developed plotting skills. Toph created the art of metal bending after everyone believed that earth benders could not do it.

The characters in Kim Possible to develop as people as well, but their growth is not as centric to the story.

9 Kim Possible: Variety Of Villains

Aang’s overall objective is to defeat Fire Lord Ozai. During his journey, Aang also must face Zuko and other fire benders. Most of Aang’s villains are fire benders, except for Long Feng and the Dai Li from the Earth Kingdom. In Kim Possible, no two villains are the same.

While Dr. Drakken and Shego, Monkey Fist, Dr. Dementor, and Duff Killigan may not be the most competent bunch, they are still different enough to add variety to the series. Schemes for domination range from world domination to becoming the monkey king.

8 Avatar: Continuing Storyline

There is a definite arc in Avatar: The Last Airbender. Aang must master the four elements then defeat the Fire Lord. That is the underlying journey amongst every individual chapter. Although there is a different story in each episode, the series never strays from that purpose and endgame. Kim Possible is a far more episodic sitcom. Although life does not reset for the main characters after episodes and previous events are mentioned, there is no underlying storyline in each chapter.

7 Kim Possible: Teenage Life

Avatar: The Last Airbender exists in a world where ordinary teenage life in the sense of high school does not exist. Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Toph are far too busy trying to save the world to be concerned about homework. While the third season does show Aang briefly attend Fire Nation school, that storyline ends quickly. During Kim Possible, high school and teenage life is an essential part of the show. Kim’s life at school against being a hero is at constant odds, pushing Kim above and beyond her limitations.

6 Avatar: World Building

Kim Possible exists in a seemingly ordinary environment. Other than villains trying to take over the world occasionally, world-building isn’t as necessary given plenty of their locations are recognizable as places, such as high school and the mall, are like those viewers have presumably visited.

But Avatar: The Last Airbender needs to develop a world. To understand the past, background, and current day in the series, fans are introduced to several tribes and locations that help tell the story. Each episode fills in the blanks about the lore of the world that helps understand everything fans need to know about the characters and the world which surrounds them.

5 Kim Possible: Developed Friendship

Unlike Aang’s friendships, Kim and Ron have known each other nearly their whole lives. Kim and Ron’s relationship is central to the plot as they act as best friends and Team Possible in saving the world. Along with their tech guy Wade, the trio knows each other well enough to anticipate each other’s needs and wants. In Aang’s case, his friends have either died or grown old in the hundred years he had been stuck in a block of ice. His relationships with Katara and Sokka must develop during the series. Aang and Toph’s friendship grows out of their teacher/student dynamic, and Zuko is a late addition to the group.

4 Avatar: Zuko’s Redemption Arc

In Kim Possible, the villains have gone to jail several times and come out with the same plans for world domination. It isn’t until the series finale that Dr. Drakken and Shego decide to help Kim and Ron defeat Warmonga and Warhok when the duo attempt to take over the planet. Although Dr. Drakken and Shego do succeed in helping, and likely continue to be good guys, it is not the long game redemption that Zuko had. In Avatar, Zuko had to reevaluate everything he thought he knew and believed about his place in the Fire Nation and his family. When Zuko decides to join Aang and defeat Fire Lord Ozai, Zuko directly confronts change head-on when Zuko and Azula must fight each other.

3 Kim Possible: Relationships With Enemies

Other than Zuko, Aang does not have a very complicated relationship with his enemies. For the most part, Aang’s job is to defeat them, and the Fire Nation wishes him dead, so there is not a lot of room to grow there.

The bonds Kim and Ron build with their opponents are more attractive, mostly because it is so absurd given their situation. Although the villains want Kim and Ron out of the way, they aren’t trying very hard to kill them. At times, it seems as if they enjoy the verbal bantering and do not want their opponents dead at all. At times, Kim and Ron even team up with the villains to take down a larger foe.

2 Avatar: Series Finale

Of course, the fate of the world hangs in the balance in both series finales. But, in Avatar: The Last Airbender, such an event was expected and prepared for. Characters and viewers alike knew that everything would end with the final confrontation between Aang and Fire Lord Ozai. Their one on one battle occurs as Zuko and Katara defeat Zuko’s sister, Azula. Meanwhile, Toph and Sokka are helping the rest of the army. Avatar also shows that Aang and Zuko would be working together moving forward while also tying up most remaining loose ends.

Kim Possible does use its finale well, showcasing Ron’s mystical monkey powers coming to the rescue. But, other than a long time pay off in that regard, it was expected for Kim Possible to conclude with a world-saving ending.

1 Kim Possible: Non-Elemental Combat

Avatar uses it’s elemental characters well, showcasing their abilities in several different scenarios. The characters brilliantly use their bending to save each other or themselves in a variety of life or death moments. But, there are fewer moments where characters are not using elemental bending. Occasionally Zuko and Sokka use swords, or in Sokka’s case, a boomerang to win a fight, but the elemental fighters have a significant advantage. In Kim Possible, there are versions of powers, such as Shego’s green hands or Monkey Fists’ mystical monkey power. But, most of the time, Kim is using several different styles of self-defense or technology to win.
