Klaus Hargreeves may be a superhero from Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy, and Charlie Pace may be a rockstar whose plane crashed onto a strange island in Lost, but these two characters actually have quite a bit in common.

From their looks and their interests to how they deal with pain and how they treat their loved ones, the two characters have a lot of similarities. Conversely, their main abilities in life and their significant others who were featured in their respective TV shows make them very different.

10 Alike: They Have Struggled With Addiction

One thing these characters have in common is their addiction issues. Klaus’ powers allow him to see dead people, which can be scary and draining at times, as can life, so he sometimes turns to drugs and alcohol, in order to help ease the pain.

Charlie was in a band with his brother, and that lifestyle introduced him to and got him addicted to heroin. Even while on The Island, he struggled with giving it up and staying sober.

9 Different: Klaus Has Super Powers, Charlie Doesn’t

Obviously, the biggest difference between these two is that Klaus is a superhero with otherworldly powers, while Charlie is a normal guy who just happened to be on Flight 815. And though both of their shows are dramas, one deals with a special group in battles of good versus evil and missions to stop the apocalypse, while the other deals with bizarre occurrences after a plane crash.

8 Alike: Klaus Can Speak To The Dead/Charlie Knew He Was Going To Die

All of the members of The Umbrella Academy have various skill sets, and for Klaus, that means interacting with those who have already passed on— initially just in communicated with them, and eventually, being able to actually directly control them in various ways.

When Charlie was on The Island, Desmond started having flashes of him dying, so he knew his time was coming. Furthermore, after he passed away and after some survivors made it back to the real world, he appeared to Hurley.

7 Different: Klaus Saved People, But Charlie Needed Saving

Those with superhuman abilities have a responsibility to save people and to save the world, and the Hargreeves family is always going up against bad guys/gals and doing what they can to help. Even though it’s often reluctantly so.

The Umbrella Academy members could have even come in handy on Lost, since a plane crashed, a smoke monster existed, The Others showed up, and many lives were, well, lost.

6 Alike: They Are Famous

Something else these characters share is fame. Being part of The Umbrella Academy makes Klaus known, and when he went back in time, he also became a renowned cult leader, making him even more popular.

Similarly, Charlie was known because of his band, Drive Shaft, and then because of being part of the famous crash.

5 Different: Sexual Preference

One key difference between these two characters is their love lives. Umbrella Academy’s Klaus has mentioned a boyfriend who “made a fantastic osso buco,” and his deepest and most heartfelt relationship was with a man named Dave that he met during the Vietnam War. It’s also revealed that, during his time as a cult leader, he was physical with both men and women. So, at the very least, Klaus is bisexual.

Charlie, on the other hand, is into women and seemingly only women, as seen in flashbacks and as seen in his relationship with Claire.

4 Alike: They Are Loyal

Both Klaus and Charlie have their issues— nobody is perfect, after all— but they are loyal. They offer helping hands, they have sensitive sides, and they literally have risked their lives to protect others. Those closest to them (Klaus’ siblings and the other survivors for Charlie, along with his brother) know they can truly count on them. This is a strong trait in both of them and a wonderful one to share.

3 Different: Klaus Dresses In A More Eccentric Way Than Charlie

Another difference is seen in their wardrobes: Klaus dresses in eccentric and over-the-top ways, while Charlie usually opts for jeans and a tee. Although, it must be pointed out that Charlie’s options were a bit limited when he was stranded on a deserted island.

Sure, when on-stage, Charlie would add some flair to his alternative outfits, but they are nothing compared to Klaus’ crop tops, boas and fur-trimmed coats which he wears in his everyday life, not because he is on stage or anything like that.

2 Alike: They Write On Their Hands

It is interesting that, in addition to all the other shared traits and quirks, both of these characters wrote on their hands. has been seen with Klaus’s “hello” on one hand and “goodbye” on the other, something that his cult followers copied.

Charlie first had tape on his fingers, which said “fate” and then “late”, and then, of course, in his final moment, he wrote “not Penny’s boat”, as a way to warn everyone of what was coming.

1 Different: Klaus Is More Laid Back Than Charlie

Klaus and Charlie both know how to relax, have a good time, and brighten the days of those around them, but Klaus has a more laid-back and sarcastic vibe. And whether it came to writing new songs or finding a way off The Island, Charlie showed more drive and initiative, for the most part, than his counterpart from The Umbrella Academy.
