Alan Wake was Remedy’s first game after the grim noir detective story, Max Payne. The game was initially exclusive to Xbox 360 before receiving a PC release. Only recently has it been made available to PlayStation owners through Alan Wake Remastered.

A lot of people are either revisiting it or going through the adventure for the first time. As good as the game is, there are a lot of things about it that make us scratch our heads. Of course, in a game like Alan Wake, this is the exact effect it wants, but it still bears mentioning.

9 The Story

This entry is a bit cheeky, but it deserves mentioning all the same. There is no rational explanation for what goes on in Alan Wake’s narrative. The Darkness, the Taken, and the idea of Alan’s stories becoming reality cannot be understood through math or science. It is a similar type of supernatural vibe to Remedy’s other game, Control.

It is like what Alan says in the beginning; the mysteries without answers are the ones that stay with us the longest. It is by design that so much of the story doesn’t make sense.

8 How Fast The Flashlight Battery Runs Out

9 Things That Make No Sense In Alan Wake Remastered

You destroy enemies’ defenses by shining a flashlight on them. You can concentrate the light with the left trigger, but this drains the battery significantly faster. In fact, the battery on a normal flashlight will drain within a few seconds when the light is concentrated.

It is absurd to think about a battery draining so fast. It is even funnier when you remember that they were Energizer batteries in the original release. The short battery life is not exactly a ringing endorsement of the brand. Additionally, Alan changes them extremely fast, an especially impressive feat when you consider the pressure he is under while evil forces try to kill him.

7 How Is Alan So Adept At Combat

9 Things That Make No Sense In Alan Wake Remastered

Alan Wake is a writer and is not given much of a backstory besides that. We have no reason to believe he’d be so good at killing things, however. To be fair, his movement is more limited than Max Payne, who is a police officer and therefore knows his way around firearms.

All the same, the gameplay and the fact he kills well over 100 of the Taken make us wonder how he is so good at it.

6 Why Does Alan Get Drunk That One Night?

9 Things That Make No Sense In Alan Wake Remastered

After escaping from Dr. Hartman’s care, Alan and Barry end up getting drunk at a house used by the Old Gods of Asgard. It is a bit ridiculous for him to indulge in alcohol when dark forces are tormenting him and his wife is missing.

Far be it from us to judge how he takes a load off, but he is in the middle of a life or death situation against forces the human mind cannot even begin to comprehend. Maybe the joke is on us, though, because in his stupor he comes upon a major revelation.

5 Why Is Agent Nightengale So Zealous

9 Things That Make No Sense In Alan Wake Remastered

Other than the Darkness, the other major force blocking Alan’s progress is Agent Nightingale. This FBI agent has some strange vendetta against Alan, but it is never exactly made clear why he is so vehement in hunting down the writer.

It stands in stark contrast to one of the game’s main influences, Twin Peaks, where Agent Dale Cooper is kind, cordial, and extremely generous. Agent Nightingale easily has one of the most satisfying deaths in Alan Wake. At least we thought it was a death until he ominously shows up in the ending.

4 Why Does Alan Point The Gun At The Sheriff?

At the end of episode five when Alan describes what he needs to do, he points the gun at the sheriff when he explains that he has to go to Cauldron Lake alone. He also makes Barry take her gun away. We understand the need for Alan to do this last part of the journey by himself, but there was no need to hold her up at gunpoint.

She is one of the few characters to be on his side and helps him out during some dire moments, and he repays her by pointing a gun at her. It probably would have been decent enough to just tell her to stay inside the bunker.

3 Alan Steals A Lot Of Cars

There are numerous driving segments in Alan Wake, which makes us wonder just how easy it is to steal a car in Bright Falls. We can understand the ease of pilfering a municipal vehicle, but the last episode, in particular, sees you taking numerous cars on the side of the road.

Maybe people in rural areas are more likely to leave their cars unlocked, but even this is doubtful. We just hope the residents of Brightfalls aren’t too broken up about their missing cars.

2 Why Doesn’t Alan Take More Lights With Him?

9 Things That Make No Sense In Alan Wake Remastered

In episode five, Barry equips himself with Christmas lights and a forehead-mounted light. Alan wonders why his agent didn’t bring one for him too, and Barry replies that it was the last one there.

If Alan is so smart, why didn’t he think of this right after the first night? We feel like there are a lot of methods he could have used to light up his surroundings other than a simple flashlight.

1 Why Are There So Many Guns Lying Around?

Other than light, guns are Alan’s main form of defense again the Taken. It is curious how there are so many weapons lying about the world for him to scoop up.

We get that guns are a little more plentiful in a North American rural town, but we would think the town of Brightfalls would practice a little more gun safety. We could believe guns lying about, but what about all the ammunition Alan comes across?
