There’s a lady in Japan who has been awarded the title of oldest videogames YouTuber in the world by the Guinness World Records. Online, she goes by the name Gamer Grandma, and she’s just the coolest person ever.

Hamako Mori is her actual name, and she was born in 1930. She currently lives in Tokyo with her family, spending three or more hours every day immersing herself in her favorite video games. And she’s pretty much been doing that for around four decades.

Back in 1981 she got her hands on her very first gaming console – the Cassette Vision – after having had her interest piqued thanks to her children’s love for games. “I discovered that there was this fascinating thing that existed in the world,” said Mori, and that hobby has stayed with her to this day. She apparently revels in the joy of gaming every day, gushing about its stress-relieving properties.

Mori has her own YouTube channel – entitled Gamer Grandma – whereupon she uploads vids of her playing her fave games (which include Grand Theft Auto V and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim). She’s gained quite the impressive following of around 320k subscribers and counting – and deservedly so.

While her old age has posed a few extra challenges, especially around the fine motor manipulation required to grapple with more finicky console button combos, Mori makes sure she stays on top of her physical abilities to play. She admits it gets difficult at times but she does all she can to keep up, like performing exercises to strengthen her hands and fingers every day.

She’s in no mood to slow down any time soon, saying “I won’t put it down just because it’s difficult … It’s better than doing nothing! I want to play well no matter how old I am. I want to continue as long as possible.”

If that isn’t inspiration enough for those of us who are massive nerds and plan to remain as such until our ripe old age, then nothing is.
