Warning: contains spoilers for the end of Naruto

The end of Naruto is infamous for the narrative’s many twists and turns. Though many have mixed feelings at best about these plot developments, it’s undeniable that they completely redefined how fans saw the series’ world, especially considering the revelation that the only reason ninjas exist at all is because of aliens.

As Naruto and his friends were forced to confront the unreasonably powerful Ten-Tails, the true culprit behind almost every major event in the series is revealed to be an ancient woman named Kaguya Ōtsutsuki, who is part of the Ten-Tailed beast. Through a combination of flashbacks in Naruto and Boruto, as well as supplementary material fleshing out the series’ world, fans learn that Kaguya is actually the very first being in Naruto’s world to possess chakra. More surprising than that though is that Kaguya was literally an alien.

Kaguya’s clan, the Ōtsutsuki, are celestial beings who travel around the universe to harvest chakra from the God Trees that they plant. Originally a lower-ranking member of the clan, Kaguya rebelled when she chose to leave her partner for dead and instead eat a fruit from the God Tree herself. This fruit imbued her with the power of chakra, giving her incredible and terrible powers which she used to rule over the world. Eventually, she gave birth to two sons, who she passed her chakra on to. These brothers ended up joining forces to take Kaguya down. One of those brothers, Hagoromo, went on to establish much of what readers are familiar with in Naruto’s world. He founded the hidden villages and is also the direct ancestor of the series’ biggest ninja clans. Despite his intentions of promoting peace, much of what he taught was twisted and weaponized to become ninjutsu.

While the twist is undoubtedly outlandish and unexpected, it does have precedence in fiction. Ancient alien mythologies forms the backbone of many pop-culture institutions. Comic legend Jack Kirby was famous for his obsession with the concept of alien astronauts, and that influence can be seen especially in his work on Thor, the New Gods, and the Eternals. Where Naruto differs though is in how it views these alien influences. Despite Hagoromo and his brother being relatively pure-hearted, the same can’t be said for the rest of the Ōtsutsuki clan. Their goal of draining planets of resources has more in common with Galactus than it does with the often indifferent or aloof Celestials. Though Kaguya was obviously a massive threat in her own right, readers are shown that she’s far from unique among her species as Boruto has seen the Ōtsutsuki clan return as antagonists.

Overall, this twist is surprising and a little strange, but is far from Naruto’s worst revelation, unlike the one about his bloodline. Despite this though, the ninja world actually being created by an alien doesn’t end up adding much beyond making the series’ lore just a bit denser. Most readers likely weren’t wondering exactly how the series’ shinobi developed the powers that they did, so this revelation ends up feeling like it’s answering a question that nobody asked. Still, it’s hard to deny that Naruto went to some wild places at its end, as evidenced by the history of Kaguya and her clan.
