Contrary to prior reports, Nintendo has announced that there is no exchange program in place for Switch owners keen on upgrading to the newest model.

The Japanese company recently released an updated version of the popular handheld and TV console with the promise of two hours of additional battery life. This came in the wake of Nintendo unveiling the handheld-only version of the console, the Switch Lite, that drops in September.

Following the release of the updated Switch, Polygon reported that the company had given owners who purchased their devices on or after July 17 the option of trading it in for the new one.

“Nintendo is giving some Switch owners the option to trade in their recently purchased systems for the latest revision of the console that offers improved battery life,” the report read. “But the offer to upgrade to the latest model of the Nintendo Switch appears to be limited to customers who purchased the original version of the Switch on or after July 17, the same day Nintendo announced the system update.

“Polygon contacted Nintendo’s customer service department and verified those details with a representative. Customer service told us that customers will need to cover shipping and insurance costs, and that customers should transfer their purchases to the new system using a Nintendo Switch Online account. The exchange offer appears to be specific to customers in the U.S. and Canada. I was told that I could not exchange an older model for any limited edition versions of the Switch, just the two standard SKUs of the latest model with improved battery life.”

However, Nintendo has since denied having such a program in a statement sent to The Verge.

“We do not have a Nintendo Switch exchange program,” the publication was told. “We always want players to enjoy their Nintendo Switch systems, and if anything ever gets in the way of that, we encourage them to visit http://support.nintendo.com for support, or to contact our consumer support team.”

This would have been a pretty sweet deal for persons wishing they had waited a bit before pulling the trigger on a Switch purchase, but that would mean Nintendo would be at a loss. Companies don’t enjoy being at a loss. So, it’s not happening. Sorry.
