Warning! Spoilers For Hellions #10 below.

The X-Men’s Havok may be heading for a breakdown after getting humiliated in the pages of Marvel’s Hellions, and it could be bad news for everyone involved. Mastermind and Arcade are subjecting the team to both ideal and nightmarish scenarios, all to leverage Mr. Sinister into working for Arcade. But Havok is has been a ticking time-bomb since the team’s inclusion, and this new wave of torture could set him off.

At a glance, Havok might seem like an odd choice for the Hellions. After all, he is Alex Summers, the brother of Cyclops, the former leader of X-Factor and a powerful member of the X-Men in his own right. Meanwhile, the Hellions are a who’s-who of X-Men villains, including the aforementioned Mr. Sinister alongside names like Scalphunter, Orphan-Maker and more. But recent history hasn’t been very kind to Havok, and it all could be coming to a head very soon.

During the AXIS storyline, Havok has his personality inverted, corrupting him to his core, making him a ruthless, violent and unstable psychopath. The scars clearly remain. This is seen on a recent mission in Hellions #10, written by Zeb Wells and illustrated by Stephen Segovia and David Curiel, where Havok lashed out and mutilated several criminals, which led to his inclusion on the team.

Unfortunately, his team on the Hellions has been anything but therapeutic. On their first outing, he was seduced by his former lover Madelyne Pryor aka the Goblin Queen. After Pryor’s defeat and death, Havok requested that she be resurrected on Krakoa, a request which his brother Cyclops denied. He also had started bonding with a sentient robotic life-form, only for Psylocke to terminate said robot as per Krakoa’s anti-AI policy. Finally, as seen in Hellions #10, Mastermind and Arcade have locked him in an illusion where Madelyn is still alive, and his lover. She was last seen whipping Alex as the scenario turned nightmarish. How Havok will react when he learns none of this is real is unknown, but it almost certainly won’t be good.

All of this certainly calls into question the Quiet Council’s judgment. Thus far, Havok’s tenure on the team would seem wholly unnecessary and potentially dangerous. His emotional instability has put the team at risk, and it’s clear he is only growing more disturbed with every mission. As forward-thinking as Krakoa claims to be, the mutant nation seems to have a habit of ignoring cracks within their society even as they become fault-lines threatening to tear their foundation asunder. Havok may as well be the poster child for this, as if anything, Mr. Sinister is exploiting his trauma for his own gain.

At this point, it seems like Havok’s only option is to break down. What form this will take remains unknown. Will he have another psychotic episode, as he did at the beginning of the series, or will he completely revert to his darker, post-AXIS personality? Either way, it almost certainly won’t be good. By ignoring Havok’s mental plight, the Quiet Council is one again playing with fire, and it’s only a matter of time before they – and potentially all of Krakoa – are burned. Hellions #10 is in stores now.
