Persona 5 is known for having a great soundtrack, and a group of musicians lead by YouTuber Charlie Ritz created a groovy funk cover of one of the standout tracks in the game, “Life Will Change.” This song is part of a new charity album called Cry of the Planet with all proceeds going towards the Minnesota Freedom Fund. The Phantom Thieves would be proud.

The Cry of the Planet album from GameGrooves comprises of 21 tracks from 36 artists around the world, in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. Most likely inspired by the words of Barrett in Final Fantasy VII Remake, GameGrooves said on the album page, “Themes of oppression and resistance can be found in all forms of entertainment, even video games, and these 21 tracks provide emotional catharsis both for the listener and the artists that created them.” Songs from games like Shadow of the Colossus, Final Fantasy VII, NieR Automata, Deltarune, and much more are featured in this cover album.

This particular track was performed by 11 musicians: Charlie Ritz, Jayhan, Xenokeys, John Stacy, Eric L, wolfman1405, Arjan Singh Dogra, Xnarky, Dov Beck-Levine, Brandon Jackson, and Gabriel de Leon. James C. Hoffman was the Mastering Engineer. That’s a long list, and despite the COVID-19 pandemic, musicians are coming together to make a change in the world.

One of Persona 5’s main themes is how authorities and the establishment can have a stranglehold on the perception in the media, and how the public perceives the world around them, due to said media. Black Lives Matter is fighting against the oppression of police brutality and is hoping to make leaders in local, state, and federal positions accountable. This song being included in an album that’s for the Black Lives Matter movement, therefore, makes sense.

Persona 5 interweaved excellent turn-based combat with a deep and impactful story that remains prevalent, especially in today’s world. It is a tad too long though! Despite a long storyline, Persona 5 Royal, an updated version of the 2016 release saw record sales in the West.

Persona 5 was given a wonderful jazzy soundtrack by Shoji Meguro. It has a lot of bangers, like: “Rivers in the Desert,” “Tokyo Sunlight,” “Wake Up, Get Up, Get Out There,” and too many others to mention! It’s worthy of a cover for a good cause, and it’s great to see these tracks being reimagined by musicians around the world. Heck, even ATLUS Sound Team remixed these tunes for the music rhythm game Persona 5: Dancing In Starlight!
