The Slayer of Demons seems to be fitter, stronger, and faster than ever before on PS5. Completing Demon’s Souls in under twenty minutes? Bug or no bug, that’s super impressive.

The next generation of gaming has become the current generation, and those who have managed to get their hands on one have a PS5 safely nestled in their homes (the launch was a huge success despite the difficultly of nabbing a console). The first title many PlayStation fans have jumped into, of course, is Demon’s Souls — a visually and musically stunning take on the 2009 classic.

It really is a technical tour de force, a tantalizing showcase of the sort of things the system will be capable of once developers really get to grips with it. It’s also an experience to be savored and appreciated — not least of which because it’s a super tough title that will bring you to a swift, miserable end if you don’t take every step carefully.

For speedrunners, though, the usual rules just do not apply. These highly skilled players know games inside out and no title’s reputation for being monstrously difficult will intimidate them. Here’s a case in point: A speedrunner has completed Demon’s Souls for PS5 in 17 minutes!

As Kotaku explains, this feat requires a major exploit — the “force quit” technique. Essentially, it’s possible to skip archstones (checkpoints) by quitting out of the game from the menu as the game is spawning a checkpoint. Distortion2, last seen actually successfully opening Demon’s Souls’ secret door, has put together a simple guide to “wrong warping” you can check out here:

Successful use of this technique allowed Distortion2 to first reach the ending (not so tough when Old King Allant’s AI doesn’t even function because you’d warped to him) in 19 minutes. Earlier today, the speedrunner went one better and completed the game in 17: 18. “Expect a really good time would be something in the mid 16:xx range,” they modestly stated in the description of the second video, suggesting the technique can be further refined and perfected.
