A Quiet Place 2 has been delayed again as a result of the coronavirus. The highly-anticipated movie is the sequel to 2018’s A Quiet Place. The horror film from director John Krasinski became a critical and commercial success, with many praising the movie’s inventive use of sound. It was also notable for being a collaboration between Krasinski and Emily Blunt, who are married in real life. Blunt’s performance, along with Krasinksi’s work directing and writing the film, propelled a A Quiet Place to become one of the most beloved horror movies of the last decade.

Considering the film’s success, many assumed a sequel was imminent. A Quiet Place 2 was originally set to release in March of this year, just as the coronavirus pandemic hit the United States. As such, it was one of the first movies delayed and eventually landed a September 4 release date. However, since then, dozens of other films have moved their release dates, especially those set to debut this summer. As of now, Tenet and Mulan, both of which were supposed to premiere in August, have no release dates. It makes sense, then, that A Quiet Place 2 has now followed suit, though, luckily, it does have a new date planned.

Paramount has moved A Quiet Place 2 to 2021, where it will now release on April 23. This shift comes alongside Paramount delayed its other planned theatrical releases as well:

  • A QUIET PLACE PART II, previously September 4, 2020 (wide), is now April 23, 2021 (wide).
  • TOP GUN MAVERICK, previously December 23, 2020 (wide), is now July 2, 2021 (wide).
  • JACKASS, previously scheduled July 2, 2021 (wide), is now September 3, 2021 (wide).
  • SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 is announced for April 8, 2022 (wide).
  • UNDER THE BOARDWALK (previously UNTITLED PARAMOUNT ANIMATION) will open July 22, 2022 (wide).
  • THE TIGER’S APPRENTICE, previously February 11, 2022 (wide), is now February 10, 2023 (wide).

This means it will be almost a full year from the movie’s initial release date to when viewers finally see it. Despite the long delay though, there’s no guarantee A Quiet Place 2 won’t be moved again, as studios continue to evaluate rising case numbers and theaters remain closed.

The news of A Quiet Place 2’s delay isn’t too surprising, considering it was releasing only a little over a month from now. At this point, that doesn’t feel like enough time for movie-goers to feel safe, even if theaters do reopen. Now that A Quiet Place 2 has moved, it’s becoming more likely that films like Wonder Woman 1984 and Black Widow may be further delayed as well. At one time, fall seemed plenty far enough way for movies to open successfully. However, that’s now more up the air than it was before.

The delay for A Quiet Place 2 is likely a smart move by Paramount, as it gives the movie far more breathing room from the pandemic. It will also serve to increase anticipation for the film, considering the length of the delay, especially from the movie’s original release date. Hopefully, all will go to plan and audiences will finally be able to see A Quiet Place 2 in April 2021. However, at this point, no release date is guaranteed.
