Warning: Potential Spoilers For Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City

A teaser for Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City may have accidentally spoiled the ending of the franchise reboot. Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City might be the seventh live-action movie based on Capcom’s Resident Evil video games, but it appears to be the first that will be genuinely faithful to them. Director Paul W.S. Anderson decided to introduce an original character named Alice (Milla Jovovich) for his 2002 Resident Evil film, and while later sequels took inspiration from the games tonally and in terms of story, they largely did their own thing.

This upset many fans of the original games, but Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City is billing itself as a much more respectful adaptation. The movie will combine and condense the events of the original two games, and will feature characters like Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, Albert Wesker, Ada Wong, and many moe. They will be taking on famous monsters from the video games, in addition to visiting familiar settings like the Spencer Estate or the RPD building, and Resident Evil 2021’s timeline is even set in 1998.

Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City will pair rookie cop Leon S. Kennedy (Avan Jogia) with Kaya Scolderario’s Claire Redfield, just like the Resident Evil 2 game did. In October 2021, Sony released a series of brief teaser trailers for every main character, including Leon. This preview ends with Leon wielding a rocket launcher to take aim at something, but for those who’ve seen the film’s initial trailer or even played the game, this Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City teaser seems to have spoiled the ending. From the context, it’s almost certain Leon has blown up the monster version of Umbrella scientist William Birkin.

In Resident Evil 2, it was Birkin’s research that led to the downfall of Raccoon City, and he infected himself with the G-Virus strain. In the game’s finale, Birkin pursued the heroes onboard an Umbrella train, where he’s finally defeated. Welcome To Raccoon City’s teasers have shown that Birkin’s monster version not only appears but attacks characters like Chris on the train. Combined with the shot of Leon firing the rocket launcher – which is commonly used in the games as the weapon to slay the final boss – and Chris diving for cover from the blast, Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City’s Leon teaser may have just revealed the finale.

That said, there could be much more to Welcome To Raccoon City’s ending. Maybe Birkin regenerates and becomes even more monstrous – which again, is what happens in the second game – and the battle is more elaborate. The Resident Evil 2021 teasers have been fairly generous with spoilers, however, and are seemingly designed to display fan-pleasing easter eggs or money shots than attempting to conceal the story. The trailers may have even revealed the villains for Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City’s sequel, but hopefully, it kept some elements a surprise for viewers.
