Developer Phoenix Labs appears to be preparing a surprise reveal of a new Terra Escalation challenge in Dauntless, announcing that there will be a mini Hunt Pass called Overgrowth from September 3-17. The announcement also states that there will be nature-themed cosmetics with more information to come soon.
The news also means that the current Hunt Pass, Clear Skies, will be cut short by two weeks to accommodate the new mini Hunt Pass. Since there is so little information right now, some players are understandably annoyed and wondering if they will receive something for this shift, since this means that there are now two weeks less to complete the 50 tiers in Clear Skies, and less time to acquire Vault Coins beyond that.
If anything, the announcement might have been far better received if it were made at the start of last weekend, when the weekend provided double Hunt Pass experience for all patrols. For now, players can only wait and see, but it will not be a good move if the current pass is cut short and the mini Hunt Pass requires more premium currency to acquire.
The other big question is how long a “mini” Hunt Pass is compared to a normal one. Typically players have around 45 days to complete all 50 tiers of the free or premium track, but with only fourteen days, players would be in a difficult position to try and grind out too many tiers.
Regardless, the big question is whether this is setting the stage for the reveal of the next Escalation in Dauntless. So far there are three to work on, Shock, Blaze, and Umbral, and the name and nature theme of the mini Hunt Pass point to a Terra Escalation launching at the end of the two weeks on September 17.
For now, we can only speculate about what Phoenix Labs might be planning with this surprise announcement. It would make no sense to interrupt a normal season of a Hunt Pass without something to show for it at the end, since a “mini” Hunt Pass could have simply come after the normal completion of Clear Skies, so September 17 must surely be the moment when there is a grand reveal.
