Marvel Comics has had more web-slingers than most can count, with the Spider-Verse introducing even more versions of Spider-Man and other spider-heroes. However, Ashley Barton is one of the most noticeable, thanks to a ridiculous backstory, lineage, and the fact the character is referred to as “Spider-Bitch.” The hero, who appears in Mark Millar and Steve McNiven’s Old Man Logan arc of Wolverine, is still known best as the inappropriate name, which Marvel tried to change years later.
The Old Man Logan arc of Wolverine by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven took readers to a dystopian Earth-807128, where the Marvel Universe was a wasteland overrun by supervillains. In the story, a much older and worn-down Wolverine teams up with Clint Barton to deliver a package through the dangerous territories. Along the way, readers are introduced to Ashley Barton, the daughter of Hawkeye and granddaughter of Peter Parker. In Old Man Logan, Hawkeye had a daughter with Peter Parker’s daughter Tonya. Barton took after her father formed a superteam of her own, despite being raised by Ultron-8 and Tonya. However, after being captured by the Kingpin, Wolverine and Hawkeye attempt to stage a rescue mission.
In Wolverine #67 and 68 by Millar, McNiven, Dexter Vines, and Morry Hollowell, Ashley Barton is seen inside a jail cell as the Kingpin brutally murders her crime-fighting partners, Daredevil and the Punisher. A guard of Barton’s cell tells her they don’t get what she’s angry about, as the other one tells her “the Kingpin looks after us, Spider-Bitch.” Funny enough, the name is what readers have called the hero since she wasn’t referred to by anything else in the series.
Iceman writer Sina Grace tweeted his surprise about a character being called Spider-Bitch from the Spider-Verse, sharing a profile from Key Comics Collector. He joked, “[I was] today years old learning about Spider-Bitch… Writing an apology email to everyone at Marvel (yes even CB) and begging to get a mini-series with this character The headline! “Sina Grace returns to Marvel for Web of Spider-Bitch.”

Is Ashley Barton canonically known as Spider-Bitch? The answer is mostly no, but given the character is referred to as such in the comics and readers have given the hero the codename, it kind of is? It’s a tad complicated. Marvel Comics even made sure to call the hero “Spider-Woman” in one of their later Spider-Verse crossovers in The Amazing Spider-Man, which was likely an attempt to change the hero’s name to something that wasn’t so inappropriate.
Spider-Bitch’s name is the Shroedinger’s Cat of the Marvel Universe. Her codename does and doesn’t exist at the same time. Nevertheless, the inappropriate name has become beloved by certain Marvel readers, even if Marvel Comics tried to distance itself from the edgy moniker by calling her Spider-Woman in the Spider-Verse comics.
