A serious bug has been found in Teamfight Tactics that’s making competitive matches far more difficult than they should be, as Riot investigates reports that units are costing more gold than they are supposed to.

The issue is that the upgrade costs for certain units is listed at one number, but a greater amount of gold is being taken from the player, which can be debilitating in the later game.

Casual players may not notice the extra few gold pieces being taken during their matches, but competitive streamers take note right away. For the unfamiliar, managing gold is one of the most important aspect of winning games in Teamfight Tactics, and players are watching closely to see if this is resolved in a timely manner.

The uses of gold are varied, but in simple terms it allows for the purchase and upgrading of units needed to defeat an opponent. One strategy in the game involves making interest on gold in the coin purse. For every 10 gold in the purse, an extra gold piece will be awarded at the end of the round in addition to the pieces that are gained normally.

As such, if a player carefully plans to have a certain amount left over for the purpose of gaining interest for subsequent rounds, they may find themselves short as this bug disrupts those calculations. Players often consider 50 gold to be optimal, since they will earn 5 extra gold in interest from this point onward. In the long run, it can make the difference between victory and defeat.

Since Teamfight Tactics is in a relatively early stage of formal development, these kinds of bugs are frequent. As the newest mode within League of Legends, the developers have been clear that this initial launch is a beta, and players should expect it to be a work in progress that has kinks to work out.

There have also been other reports of bugs that can be equally or more game breaking. There is a megathread maintained on Reddit where players can read through and make their own reports for odd bugs arising in the game. One example of this is that the shop may disappear entirely at some point during a match, and both players stop gaining experience. Less serious bugs often come in the form of certain abilities not behaving as they should, such as Rek’sai not healing after using an ultimate ability.

Hopefully the bug will be resolved soon. The rise in popularity of Teamfight Tactics from before its formal inclusion as a mode in League of Legends has become apparent, and well-known streamers from other games have either moved over to this new mode permanently or are at least playing it often at competitive levels. Currently, the game attracts more viewers on Twitch than Hearthstone, and is often right below other popular games like PUBG and Fortnite.
