A Totally Scientific Guess Of The Democratic Candidates Favorite Video Games

The Democratic party primary process has been going on since what feels like the dawn of time, with still well over a year to go until the next presidential election. Many of us know more about this current group of candidates than some of our own cousins thanks to never-ending media coverage since the process (and seemingly the Big Bang) began.

Somehow, such an exorbitant amount of reporting has still left us with an appalling lack of insight into one absolutely unimportant component of each candidate’s platform (save for one) that’s nonetheless well worth considering: what kind of gamer are they? Thankfully, science* has the answer.

* Unscientific speculation that might as well be science. You and I both know it’s spot-on. We’re on the level over here.

Pete Buttigieg – Minecraft

Minecraft has few goals beyond what each individual player wants to do with their time playing it. Building mansions out of gold, surviving the depths Minecraft Hell or creating a working Game Boy are all valid approaches to the game. Pete Buttigieg would enjoy Minecraft, because he too offers voters a grab-bag of ideas that seem meant to appeal to both no one and everyone.

Amy Klobuchar – Pong

Pong is a simple game. It’s something grandparents all over the world could not only understand, but may have even played when it first came out. Klobuchar’s major selling point is her straightforward charm, just like gaming session spent hitting a pixelated ball back and forth. There’s nothing wrong with it, per se, but it outdated compared to today’s major video game releases.

Mike Bloomberg – NARC

Released in 1988, NARC was one of the first video games to ever cause public concern over excessive on-screen violence. Looking back on it from a present day perspective, its politics, simply put, are a relic of the time it was released. The one-time New York mayor who implemented racial profiling policies and was the recipient of over 40 sexual harassment and discrimination lawsuits would have a field day with NARC’s brand of 80s violence.

Elizabeth Warren – Nier

Elizabeth Warren is easy to like. She’s smart, well-spoken and her policies align relatively closely with many of her fellow progressive candidates. Like 2010’s similarly flawed-but-great Nier, however, Warren has floundered in some crucial aspects of her campaign. Like Nier, those flaws don’t spoil the whole, but they have effected her primary performance, which is the closest a presidential candidate can come to receiving a 7/10 IGN review.

Tom Steyer – Yeah Yeah Beebiss I

What, exactly, is Tom Steyer’s deal? The same science that determined each candidate’s gaming preferences also seems to indicate that this is an unanswerable question. Yeah Yeah Beebiss I, in a manner similar to Steyer’s presence among the full slate of Democratic candidates, was a video game title listed in multiple issues of a mail-order video game magazine, Play It Again. The game, of course, doesn’t exist. Steyer does exist, but the dissimilarities end there.

Bernie Sanders – Undertale

A Totally Scientific Guess Of The Democratic Candidates Favorite Video Games

Undertale is an anomaly. Its juvenile GameMaker graphics and gameplay were carried by stellar writing and bold originality, which made what might appear on the surface to be a tepid 16 bit-era JRPG throwback into a modern classic. Bernie would find lots to love in this old-meets-new approach to gaming, that turned a whole generation of young gamers onto its throwback design and forward thinking sensibility. Plus, if there’s one presidential candidate with a fanbase known for being as passionate as Undertale’s, it’s Sanders.

Joe Biden – Duke Nukem Forever

For what it’s worth, Duke Nukems 1-3 are gaming classics. Duke Nukem Forever, the Chinese Democracy of the video game world, was hyped for 15 years of development as the next gen continuation of the hit franchise, only to become an instant dud as soon as it saw the light of day. Joe Biden would find that experience relatable.
