Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg has announced that he will be stepping down from his position in March after eight long years with the company.

The more casual gamers among you likely don’t often think about the hours that go into creating your favorite titles or the people behind big corporate names such as Ubisoft and EA. Yet, if you take a look at just how far the gaming industry has come in the past 30 years, then you’ll realize exactly how much work goes into creating just one game, let alone the legions of releases these companies constantly churn out. One of the names behind that wall is Eric Hirshberg, the CEO of Activision.

Whatever comes next for Activision, however, will not involve Eric Hirshberg. Polygon posted the news that he would be stepping down from his post and according to VentureBeat, Activision has already taken up the task of trying to find his replacement. Hirshberg will officially step down in March and as of now, it is unknown why he will be leaving the company.

As well as the Call Of Duty games, Hirshberg also played an active role in the launch of Destiny. That project was a much more challenging one to say the least. According to Activision’s numbers, however, the latest installments in both series (Call Of Duty WWII and Destiny 2) were the two best selling games of 2017. Hirshberg has also spurred on Activision’s role in the ever growing world of eSports and was behind the launch of the first-ever $1 million Call Of Duty championship in 2011.

At this moment in time, it doesn’t seem like Eric Hirshberg stepping down is for a sinister or underhanded reason, merely both parties feeling like it’s time for a change. Hirshberg himself had nothing but glowing things to say about Activision in his statement and the man he has reported to for the past eight years, Activision Blizzard chief Bobby Kotick described him as an “inspiring leader” and that they will “miss his creativity and tenacity very much.”

Josh has been gaming for as long as he can remember. That love began with a mild childhood addiction to the Sega Genesis, or Mega Drive since he lives in the UK. Back then, Sonic 2 quickly became his favorite game and as you might have guessed from his picture, the franchise has remained close to his heart ever since. Nowadays, he splits his time between his PS4 and his Switch and spends far too much time playing Fortnite.
