Nintendo has announced that Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp has been delayed to an unspecified date in Spring 2022. The title was announced at E3, and will completely remake the first two Advance Wars games for the Switch, including all new graphics and an updated multiplayer mode. The original games first released for the Game Boy Advance in 2001 and 2003 respectively, and the series has not seen a new game since Advance Wars: Days of Ruin launched in 2008.

The Advance Wars series was originally developed by Intelligent Systems, the team behind the Fire Emblem series, and features similar tactical turn-based gameplay. Rather than the fantasy world typical of Fire Emblem, however, Advance Wars features a modern setting and tasks the player with commanding tanks, bombers, and other units. Each battle is led by COs, unique characters with special powers to help their side achieve victory. Advance Wars Re-Boot Camp was originally slated to release later this year, shortly after Nintendo’s Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl remakes.

A tweet by Nintendo of America confirmed that this will no longer be the case, however. The game’s original release date of December 3 has been pushed back to Spring 2022. The tweet stated that “The game just needs a little more time for fine tuning. You’ll be battling with Andy & friends soon!” The exact issue causing the delay is unknown, but it is likely that developer WayForward needs more time to adjust the game’s graphics or other changes in the remake.

Hello, troops! #AdvanceWars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp, which was set to launch on 12/3, will now release for #NintendoSwitch in spring 2022. The game just needs a little more time for fine tuning. You’ll be battling with Andy & friends soon! Thanks for your patience. pic.twitter.com/dSi8VSsxTH

In the course of adapting Advance Wars for the Switch, the developer is completely overhauling the 2D graphics of the original to make them three-dimensional. The COs and named characters are also getting an updated art style, and the soundtrack will be improved for the final release. Any other differences, including possible updates to the gameplay, are still unknown. Any of these changes could be the reason behind the delay, or the company could simply be freeing up space for the other Nintendo games releasing this year.

Advance Wars has never been Nintendo’s most popular franchise, but with the rise of Fire Emblem in recent years, its possible that the series could find a new audience that enjoys the strategy and the generally lighthearted story that the games have to offer. Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp focuses on the early titles in the series, before complicated new mechanics and odd plot twists were introduced in the later games. As an introduction to the franchise, Re-Boot Camp looks like it will serve well for potential players unfamiliar with the games. With the Switch blowing past the Game Boy Advance in total sales, more Nintendo fans than ever could be introduced to the series in just a few months.
