Spoilers for Out of Body #1 ahead!

AfterShock Comics’ new supernatural detective series, Out of Body, is a trippy, psychedelic odyssey featuring astral projection, a medium, Dorian Gray, and lots of hallucinogens. Written by Peter Milligan with art by Inaki Miranda, colors by Eva De La Cruz and letters by Sal Cipriano.

Peter Milligan is no stranger to trippy, hallucinatory comics. Regarded as one of the founders of DC’s Vertigo imprint in the early 90s alongside luminaries such as Neil Gaiman and Grant Morrison, Milligan has been responsible for titles such as X-Force/X-Statix, Enigma, Hellblazer as well as the classic Shade the Changing Man; now Milligan brings these sensibilities to the supernatural detective thriller genre, teaming up with superstar artist Inaki Miranda to infuse the genre with new twists in Out of Body.

Dan Collins is a psychologist who uses hallucinogenic therapy for his patients. He is brutally attacked by an unknown assailant and left comatose. Meanwhile, miles away in the Ozarks, a young medium is using her considerable talent to communicate with famous dead people, much to the chagrin of her family, who would rather she use the ability to make money. A mysterious man named August Fryne is stalking the young medium, looking for a soul for his shadowy employer, who may or may not be Dorian Gray, from 19th-century writer Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray. When Dan Collins’ wife and partner come to visit him in the hospital, she injects him with LSD to see if it will bring him out of his coma. Instead, it grants him astral projection powers, which connect him with the young psychic—and sets him on a hallucinatory trip towards something bigger, and more sinister, than himself.

Psychedelia plays a huge role in this book. LSD, a known hallucinogen, serve as the catalyst for Dan Collins’ transformation, boosting his latent psychic powers and helping him connect with the one person who may be able to help him. Peter Milligan balances this trippiness with a police procedural, putting a fresh spin on that genre; the presence of Dorian Gray adds a bizarre twist as well. Dan’s trips are rendered spectacularly by Inaki Miranda and enhanced further by Eva De La Cruz’s brilliant use of color. It works to create a beautiful and explosive scene, radiating with psychedelic energy. These gorgeous scenes are balanced out by the terror that is coming for Dan and his new psychic friend.

Out of Body, from AfterShock Comics, is a new kind of supernatural detective thriller, mixing the genre’s procedural roots with psychedelic sensibilities. It ranks among the best of Peter Milligan’s work and is a career highlight as well for Inaki Miranda and Eva De La Cruz.
