The official Twitter account for the Age Of Empires may have just dropped a hint at the possible release date for Age Of Empires III and it’s Gamescom.

Fans of the classic real-time strategy franchise have been hearing some stirrings with Age Of Empires III for some time now hinting at an upcoming release. In January Microsoft rolled out a series of open beta tests as reported by TheGamer. Players could also join the beta through Steam.

But now it appears that Microsoft is finally ready to release the game to eagerly awaiting fans if a recent cryptic Twitter post is anything to go by.

For the average player, it probably doesn’t look like much, just a random series of icons depicting the characters and items in the game. Players quickly realized however that it was a secret code. The icons depict things in the game that have keyboard shortcuts, those shortcuts when spelled out in the order depicted in the images is “GAMESCOM”.

It seems fans will only need to wait a few days for the Definitive Edition of Age Of Empires III to be released. Though it’s unclear which day of Gamescom it will happen as the event goes from the 27th of August to the 30th.

It will be interesting to see what changes have been made to the classic title since its original release. When first unveiled it surprised fans with well-integrated strategic multiplayer and the fun Home City system. But a lot has changed over the years and some players are hoping for some modern updates.

Especially when considering that Age of Empires II Definitive Edition introduced some modern polishes of its own. Examples include automatically replanting farms once they’re harvested, a global recruitment queue, and excluding peasants when click-dragging armies.

The full release of Age Of Empires III Definitive Edition probably won’t make many waves with mainstream gamers. But for those who’ve been gaming for nearly two decades it’s bound to be a fun and nostalgic strategic romp through familiar territory with some of the modern gaming conveniences players have come to expect.
