Sam Lake has addressed questions about Alan Wake II’s switch to survival horror; in so doing, the Creative Director confirmed the sequel will be played from the third-person perspective. Despite the rumors that crop up every so often, Alan Wake 2’s Game Awards announcement took much of the industry by surprise late last week.

The surprising news came with a bit of a twist, though. While the titular hero and his nightmarish world should remain at the nexus of the experience, the sequel won’t come in the form of another action-focused adventure. Rather, Remedy Entertainment is using the Alan Wake sequel as its first foray into the survival horror genre, leaning heavily into elements that were merely touched upon in the original entry. The shift to survival horror, of course, raised questions about a potential perspective change from third to first-person. Sam Lake’s avoidance of gameplay-related specifics in a recent interview with IGN’s Ryan McCaffrey piqued the curiosity of many a longtime fan in this regard. Fortunately, Lake himself has since provided an answer to this particular question and others.

A recent Twitter post from Sam Lake clarifies that Alan Wake 2 will continue the franchise’s tradition of third-person gameplay. He additionally confirmed that both Ilkka Villi, Wake’s physical model, and Matthew Porretta, the voice of Wake, will reprise their respective parts for the long-awaited sequel. As he explained during a brief appearance at The Game Awards, the Creative Director additionally noted that Remedy will go dark for a while to focus on developing the game. More news about the project should surface sometime in the summer of 2022, Lake told Game Awards host Geoff Keighley.

Thank you for being as excited about Alan Wake 2 as we are ❤️🔥🔦. A couple of easy clarifications before we go dark to continue the work. Yes, this is a 3rd person game. Though Alan Wake would make for an interesting first-person experience, the gameplay’s unique reliance on flashlights during combat encounters could’ve presented quite the challenge from a design standpoint. It seems this piece of the puzzle counts as one that Remedy isn’t interested in solving as of yet.

Remedy’s sequel announcement comes roughly two months after the release of the well-received Alan Wake Remastered. The new version of the cult classic improved the graphics and general performance for a package that also boasted both post-launch DLC releases – The Signal and The Writer. Jury’s still out on whether or not the standalone expansion Alan Wake’s American Nightmare will ever reenter the spotlight.
