Alec Baldwin responds to the tragedy from the set of Rust in which a prop gun fired by him resulted in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Baldwin leads the Western film as producer, star and co-developer of the story with writer/director Joel Souza. The plot of the film revolves around an outlaw with a bounty on his head who must travel to Kansas to break his 13-year-old grandson out of prison when he is convicted of accidental murder and sentenced to hang.

Alongside Baldwin, the cast for Rust includes Travis Fimmel, Brady Noon, Frances Fisher and Jensen Ackles. Production first began on the film earlier this month, though has suffered a major setback as Souza was injured and Hutchins was killed from Baldwin discharging a prop gun with a live round chambered, causing an indefinite suspension of filming. With an investigation currently underway on the matter, the star at the center of it all has opened up about the incident.

A day after the incident occurred, Baldwin has taken to Twitter to offer an update on the on-set tragedy in which Rust cinematographer Hutchins was killed by a prop gun fired by the actor. Baldwin expressed a feeling of “shock” and “sadness” regarding the matter and confirms he is “fully cooperating” with law enforcement for their investigation and is in touch with Hutchins’ family. The response to the on-set tragedy from Rust has been one largely of shock amongst the public, with many drawing parallels between the incident and that of the one that took the life of Brandon Lee on the set of The Crow. The family of the star also came out with a response to the tragedy, sending their condolences to Hutchins’ family and stating that no prop gun should ever kill someone on the set of a film. Baldwin’s response to the tragedy is the only positive to come from the situation, with the actor assuring his full cooperation in the investigation and his grief to the family of the cinematographer.

Former collaborators of Rust cinematographer Halyna Hutchins have also taken to social media to express their grief for her loss and frustration for the circumstances that caused it, some of whom include Werewolves Within’s Josh Ruben, The Pale Door’s Aaron B. Koontz and Archenemy’s Adam Egypt Mortimer. With the investigation having only just begun into the situation, details will likely remain under wraps for the time being. Only time will tell whether production will resume on Rust in the near future or if the film will ultimately be scrapped.
