Warning: contains spoilers for Superman: Son of Kal-El Annual 2021!

It has been nearly a year since Alfred, Batman’s butler and long-time ally, perished, but he continues to illuminate the lives of those around him, as proven by his gift to Superman’s family. In Superman: Son of Kal-El Annual 2021, on sale now in print and digital, readers learn Alfred is still looking out for Batman, by ensuring Lois and Clark have a supply of his favorite tea.

Although initially conceived as a comedic foil for Batman, Alfred has morphed into the true MVP of the Bat-Family. Over the years, various creators steered Alfred away from his bumbling origins, making him (depending on the incarnation) the Bat-Family’s resident mechanic, medic, and quartermaster. In addition to raising Bruce after his parents’ murder, Alfred has served as a confidant to the various Robins over the years. Recently, Alfred met his end at Bane’s hands, but his legacy continues to live on. Before his death, Alfred had amassed a small fortune of his own and left it to Nightwing, who took the money and opened a philanthropic organization, named after Alfred. This foundation would address the systemic issues leading people to crime, in hopes of creating a better and more just society for all. The foundation honors Alfred’s legacy of caring, and in Superman: Son of Kal-El Annual 2021, readers see another small, but still meaningful way he cared for those around him. The issue is written by Tom Taylor, with art by Steve Pugh, Clayton Henry and Romulo Fajardo Jr, colors by Steve Buccellato, and letters by Dave Sharpe.

As Superman has left Earth in a bid to liberate the citizens of Warworld, his son Jon has taken up the mantle in his father’s absence. Batman drops by Lois’ apartment with a message he wishes Jon to deliver to Clark. As Batman settles in, Jon asks if he would like tea and Batman asks for Earl Grey if they have it. Jon tells Batman “of course [they] have it,” and they get a supply every month. Batman asks why they do this and Lois tells him Alfred had Earl Grey sent to their apartment each month—just in case Batman dropped by. Batman is actually caught off-guard, saying he did not know Alfred was doing this; however, he seems pleased.

Alfred sending tea to Superman’s house is a small gesture, but it reinforces why Alfred was the heart and soul of the Bat-Family. Alfred knew that Superman and Batman were friends and that Bruce may pay a call on Clark from time to time. Ensuring that Batman would always have a supply of Earl Grey tea shows Alfred’s thoughtfulness on its own, but ensuring he has it when he visits a friend’s house is truly next-level. Batman seems genuinely surprised—even in death, Alfred is still full of surprises.

Alfred’s loss is still being intensely felt by Batman and the rest of the Bat-Family, and the revelation he had Batman’s favorite tea sent to Superman’s family shows how deep their connection runs. Without Alfred, the Bat-Family has lost one of its most caring and selfless members.
