It is hardly surprising that Tyrone (Demetrius Shipp Jr.) is shot dead in the tumultuous All American season 2. That said, the identity of his killer and their reason for the murder were far from predictable. The killer is revealed to be none other than Ruth Scott (Bernadette Speakes), mother to Shawn and Brandon, a woman who is forced to take drastic steps.

In All American season 2, episode 13, “The Art of Peer Pressure,” Tyrone is shown standing out on the front porch of his home when he is killed. The Crenshaw gang leader takes three bullets to the chest and falls back onto his couch. No one was shown pulling the trigger in this specific scene, but it is far from shocking in the context of All American season 2 that Tyrone is “taken out” as a murderer, drug dealer, and certified villain in the world of All American. Viewers are initially led to believe it was Coop (Bre-Z), who had previously both snitched on and threatened to kill Tyrone, but Coop is, in fact, covering up for the real murderer.

Put simply, Ruth Scott killed Tyrone purely out of revenge. In the span of just one year, she is shown to have lost both of her sons, Shawn (Jay Reeves) and Brandon (Jefferson Reid), due to Tyrone and his gang’s warfare. Coop, who is in the know from the off, points out that Tyrone “took everything” from Ruth. When she’s finally arrested, Ruth shares that she did it to make the “pain stop,” which would never happen as long as Tyrone was free.

Ruth’s ownership of Tyrone’s murder on All American season 2 is a huge act, but not an entirely selfless one. Ruth knows that a videotape exists of Coop in the vicinity of the killing and that Coop was a prime suspect in the crime. In their final conversation, Ruth even tells Coop that she turned herself in to the authorities because she couldn’t destroy Coop’s All American life, and she wanted for her to enjoy a childhood without violence.

While it’s surprising that Ruth not only kills Tyrone but also turns herself in, it is Coop’s entanglement in All American’s criminal events that leads Ruth to take such drastic action. Of course, Ruth is ultimately a peripheral character who appears in only three episodes of All American season 2. In this way, an easily dispensable character, who had no family left, is not an entirely shocking reveal as the real killer of Tyrone.
