Like many other long-running “adult” cartoons, American Dad is tasked with coming up with new, interesting storylines as they combat the possible problem of becoming stale after such a long time. One way these shows continue to produce somewhat original storylines is the inclusion of pop culture at the given time. Once they tap into relevant pop culture, the ability to tell more stories and produce more episodes becomes somewhat easier.

American Dad ventured into the esports scene (more specifically competitive Overwatch) with its latest episode titled “Brave N00b World.”

The episode itself was hit-or-miss with the ideas it brought as well as its execution. Some parts were genuinely enjoyable like Patrick Stewart explaining Overwatch as well as dropping actual hero names. The actual matches were painfully bad with the gameplay shown, but that added to its charm with a really funny moment with the entire team jumping off the map on Junkertown.

Some other things didn’t hit that well such as how they made it seem like all young esports players vape and they played the matches with controllers instead of a mouse and keyboard like actual competitive Overwatch is. These can be seen as nitpicks more than anything but it felt more like a naive view of the esports world instead of actual satire.

The plot itself was relatively straightforward. The main character, CIA Agent Stan Smith, is tasked with infiltrating a competitive Overwatch tournament to eliminate the head of North Korea’s nuclear program. The other CIA Agents (along with Stan) go undercover as young Overwatch pros as they practice to get better for the tournament. An underlying plot point is the relationship between Stan and his son as his son hopes to spend more time with him and connect better.

The other subplot was completely unnecessary as it dealt with the rest of Stan’s family getting their head stuck in the stair banister. If they would have scrapped this plot they could have fleshed out more ideas with the main plot, particularly his relationship with his son. There was also a pretty funny idea presented where the CIA Agents inject themselves with stem-cells from Korean players. They could have explored that a lot more which could have provided more insight into the Overwatch scene.

Overall, it was nice to see competitive Overwatch (and esports in general) get some spotlight on American Dad. There is a lot to tap into with the scene if these types of shows decide to venture into that area again and it would be nice to continue to see them bring a high level of satire with a bit more fleshed out details. Not too shabby, actually. I had a good time with it.
